Slosberg drops effort to toss Dem primary rival Klasfeld from ballot

Friday, August 13th, 2010 by George Bennett

Former Democratic state Rep. Irv Slosberg has dropped his efforts to get educator Sheldon “Klassy” Klasfeld tossed from the Aug. 24 Democratic primary ballot in their state House District 90 race.

Slosberg claimed paperwork errors by Klasfeld disqualified him. He filed a lawsuit against Klasfeld, but today filed a voluntary dismissal in Leon County Circuit Court.

Klasfeld, already an underdog, accused wealthy former House member Slosberg of “bullying” him.

Klasfeld said the legal filings and depositions brought about by Slosberg’s action hindered his campaign, raised his blood pressure and cost him about $20,000.

Slosberg plays hardball vs. ‘Klassy’ Klasfeld in bid for old state House seat

Our Samantha Frank provides this overview of the state House District 90 Democratic primary between former Rep. Irving “Irv” Slosberg and educator Sheldon “Klassy” Klasfeld.

Heavy favorite Slosberg is suing to try to knock Klasfeld off the ballot, claiming his filing documents are improper.

“He’s acting like a thug,” claims Klasfeld.

The race reprises two of the more memorable campaign slogans in south county politics. Slosberg was elected three times urging voters to “Let Irv Serve.” Klasfeld lost a 2006 primary despite the catchy “Send Klassy to Tallahassee” slogan.

TALLAHASSEE — Former Democratic state Rep. Irving Slosberg of Boca Raton was at the Capitol today to promote Safe Teen Driver Week with Florida Transportation Secretary Stephanie Kopelousos.

Look for him to file Friday as a candidate for his old Palm Beach-Broward state House seat.

Slosberg, was elected to the House in 2000 as a traffic safety crusader after his 14-year-old daughter was killed in a 1996 car wreck. He championed a variety of seat belt laws and other traffic safety measures before leaving in 2006 to pursue a state Senate bid. Slosberg lost a costly and bitter Dem primary to eventual Sen. Ted Deutch, who was boosted by the support of former U.S. Rep. Robert Wexler.

This time around, former Wexler chief of staff and political consultant Eric Johnson is expected to help Slosberg’s bid for the District 90 House seat now held by Rep. Kelly Skidmore, D-Boca Raton. Skidmore is leaving to run for state Senate. Educator Sheldon “Klassy” Klasfeld, a Democrat, is the only other candidate in the race.
