Obama fundraiser this week at home of recount lawyer – who represented Bush

Monday, August 22nd, 2011 by Dara Kam

Barry Richard, the lawyer who was instrumental in keeping Al Gore out of the White House a decade ago, is hosting a fundraiser for President Obama at his Tallahassee home on Wednesday.

Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a Congresswoman from South Florida, will be the guest star at the fundraiser (suggested donations are $100) at the home of Richard and his wife Allison Tant. Wasserman Schultz served in both the state House and Senate before going to Washington.

Richard, a silver-haired Democrat, was a key figure in the historic recount legal battle known as “Bush vs. Gore,” arguing on behalf of George W. Bush all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Hillary Clinton disses Jeb Bush in Nigeria

Saturday, August 15th, 2009 by George Bennett

In case you didn’t follow every turn of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s tour of Africa this week, she appeared to equate former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush’s role in the 2000 presidential recount with Nigeria’s notorious history of political corruption.

“In 2000, our presidential election came down to one state where the brother of the man running for president was the governor of the state. So we have our problems too,” America’s top diplomat said.

Here’s a full account from ABC News, including this modified walk-back by a State Department spokesman: “The point she is making is that it’s about a disputed result and then the willingness of the candidates to accept a flawed result rather than, say resort to violence.”

Will judge reverse his own election ruling?

Monday, April 20th, 2009 by George Bennett

WEST PALM BEACH — Two weeks after he upheld incumbent Jack McDonald’s one-vote victory in a Palm Beach mayor’s race, Judge David Crow today listened to another 30 minutes of arguments on whether he should reconsider his decision.

Crow said he will issue an order “shortly” in a case that is being watched closely by elections officials around the state because it could ultimately set a new legal precedent for the way absentee ballots are handled.

However Crow rules, attorneys on the losing side are likely to file an appeal.

During today’s proceeding, Crow revisited arguments over whether McDonald’s challenger or the Palm Beach County elections office has the burden of proving whether disputed absentee ballots were “received” in time to be counted.

Let the appeals begin….

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009 by George Bennett

Circuit Judge David Crow’s Monday ruling that upheld Palm Beach Mayor Jack McDonald’s one-vote victory in a February runoff doesn’t end the legal wrangling over how absentee ballots should be counted.

Crow even says so.

“This court recognizes that this decision will not be the final word in this dispute,” he writes near the beginning of his 16-page opinion.

Indeed, the attorney for McDonald challenger Gerry Goldsmith says he plans to appeal.
