Obamacare site frozen

by Laura Green | October 1st, 2013

At 11:30 a.m., I could get into the healthcare.gov site and was able to create a login. But now that I am trying to choose my security questions, the options on the pull down menu are blank.

Since launching around midnight, there have been problems with healthcare.gov, the site where Americans are supposed to be able to sign up, for the first time today, for new plans under the Affordable Care Act.

Most states, like Florida, opted to have the federal government run their online marketplace. But even states that launched their own are having problems or seem locked up today. Sites for Maryland, Oregon and California each were down at some point today.

President Barack Obama warned about potential problems in an interview with NPR.

“There will be a 6-month enrollment period,” he said. “In the first week, first month, first three months, I would suspect that there will be glitches. This is 50 states, a lot of people signing up for something, and there are going to be problems,” Obama said.

This morning, consumers received a “please wait” message or one that told them the system was down.

The problem could be a sign that Americans have flocked to the site in search of affordable insurance. Or it could indicate something much more basic: technical problems have paralyzed the site.

The Department of Health and Human Services put out this statement: “We have built a dynamic system and are prepared to make adjustments as needed and improve the consumer experience. This new system will allow millions of Americans to access quality, affordable health care coverage – without underwriting. Consumers who need help can also contact the call center, use the live chat function, or go to localhelp.healthcare.gov/ to find an in-person assister in their community.”

The website directs people to telephone assistance. The federal government offers 24-hour help at 1-800-318-2596.

The website is http://www.healthcare.gov.

  2. What next.. Says:

If you think this is broken, wait until you get access and try to sign up.

What’s sad is companies are dropping insurance, cutting jobs and reducing hours because of this train wreck program.

At an absolute minimum, Congress and their staffs should be forced to use this just like the rest of us are.

    @ What next..

You don’t need to tell me that again brother. You just hit the proverbial “donkey on the teeth”. Speaking of thinking something is broken, just last night I was pounding my pud like a fella in the state pen when out of nowhere I heard this audible pop. Don’t get me wrong, I know what a man should feel like, but boy-howdy that stung! If you have any advice on what I should do next, I’d be much obligied.

Sp many people (48 million) need health insurance that the sites are crashing – in my view that means there is a huge need – that will be filled.
Republicans had 8 years under Bush to something – the nation was screaming for it – they did nothing – now they want to take us back to doing nothing – no thanks.

    @ Downtown Danny,

That’s exactly right! The Repubs don’t want it to work because they’ll have to face the fact this it is a Godsend for so many and it will eventually dawn on everyone that this could have been done years ago but the GOP stopped it from happening! It’s going to make them look really bad and they don’t want that!
