Former Heat star Tim Hardaway to be first signer of same-sex measure

by John Kennedy | July 3rd, 2013

Former NBA star Tim Hardaway tonight is scheduled to become the first petition-signer on the Equal Marriage Florida effort to put a proposed constitutional amendment legalizing same-sex marriage in the state on the November 2014 ballot.

Hardaway, a member of some great Miami Heat teams in the 1990s, plans to sign the petition at 7 p.m. at Scully’s Tavern in the Kendall area. The campaign must gather more than 680,000 signatures from registered voters to have a chance to get on the ballot.

Signing the same-sex marriage measure comes only a couple months after Hardaway reached out and endorsed NBA player Jason Collins for coming out as the first openly gay athlete in any of the major professional leagues. Hardaway’s son, Tim, Jr., also has just been drafted by the New York Knicks.

Hardaway in 2007 made news for telling a Miami radio interviewer that he didn’t like gay people and acknowledged he was homophobic. After enduring a host of financial sanctions and being barred from activities at an NBA All-Star weekend, Hardaway began a long road toward tolerance, telling another interviewer about the incident, ”I’m going to do whatever I can to correct it.”

Equal Marriage Florida would define marriage as a “union of two persons” and would erase a gay marriage ban approved by voters only five years ago.

The effort was launched just days before U.S. Supreme Court rulings that struck down the federal Defense of Marriage Act and effectively made California the 13th state in the nation where same-sex couples can legally marry.

So people can pretty much get outcasted because they have an OPINION towards gay people? That’s exactly what it is, someone’s opinion. May God help you if your opinion towards gay people is not the same as everyone else. I don’t have a problem with anyone that is gay, if some people are against it, let them be, as long as they aren’t doing anything harmful to anyone else. If we all think the same we would just be robots.

  2. Nugzilla Says:

I’ve been to Scully’s Tavern in Kendall… After a few hours in there, I’d probably sign anything you gave me too!

  3. Cone Says:

This is too funny. Florida has already voted against same-sex marriage and know there is a petition to reverse this vote. This should make one wonder if your vote count when you go to cast your ballot. I don’t believe in same-sex marriage mainly because God created male and female and they became one. This is a sin, but I am going to always show the love of God towards the homosexuals no matter what. Tim Hardaway is only doing this to redeem himself. I believe if he kept his mouth shut he would have not been signing this petition. Those who are against same-sex marriage like me, should get a petition gong to avoid from happening.

  4. TM state Says:

Florida is a traditional marriage state and god willing will remain so. No one has the right to abandon thousnds of years of human history and declare marriage to be something it’s not. This effort to redefine marriage contrary to moral and natural law is the latest attempt to destroy the family unit, which will lead to the collapse of society.

  5. Carol G Says:

I have an opinion about you, do I have your permission to degrade you until you are an outcast in society, your family’s home, to the point you’re suicidal? Do I have your permission to deny you civil rights? Do I have your permission to fire you from your job, kick you out of your home and away from your loved ones death bed based on my OPINION? When my opinion of YOU causes this, then post your hateful little message again.

  6. Carol G Says:

Cone, why does what happens/doesn’t happen in someone elses bedroom fascinate you so? If you don’t like same-sex marriage, then don’t marry someone of the same sex. Also, marriage is a CONTRACT (try to get out of marriage to find the truth in THAT statement), how people celebrate their marriage is called a CEREMONY (held in religious institutions, beachfronts and bars across this great land). TM, there has been same sex attraction since the beginning of TIME -so I have a hard time believing in your make-believe friend.

  7. Cone Says:

Carol G, where did you read the message of hate on these post?

  8. Cone Says:

Carol G, I respect your post. Question: Do you support same sex marriage? Are you offended by my opinion? Was I attacking homosexuals? You believe marriage is a contract, that is your opinion and I respect that. You don’t have to agree with my post, but at least show some respect.

  9. Educator Says:

TM. There is a history of gay relationships and marriages in many societies dating back to the beginning of recorded history. In fact, it wasn’t until the Christians came to power that gay relationships were outlawed in the Roman Empire. It collapsed soon after hundreds of years, just saying. Please educate yourself. My wife and I have been advocates for equality for ALL for many years.

  10. TM state Says:

Carol, same sex attraction like, any other disordered condition, may have existed throughout history, but official government approval of same sex “marriage” is a brand new phenomenon. I don’t care what two adults do in their own bedroom but I have an interest in what my state government, that I pay my taxes, to sanctions when it comes to moral or any other issues. And you should stop condemning opinions that differ from yours as “hateful”. Reasonable people can disagree without resorting to childish attacks.

  11. Educator Says:

Cone you have the same right to be against same sex marriage as you do to be against intermarriage between races and religions and integration for that matter. You do not have the right to legislate your feelings and deny the rights of others who do not share your beliefs. Popular vote? LOL. Segregation would have continued for many years. That is not how a Republic works. Once again, education is the key.

  12. Educator Says:

TM. You are just plain wrong and probably innocently ignorant. Many societies through out history have supported and sanctioned same sex marriages and relationships. At least google it before you embarrass yourself any further.

  13. Tonya Nieves Says:

Same-sex marriage is on it’s way to Florida. The majority are in favor of equality. Religion plays no rule in the law. It never has and it never will. Sorry to burst “Ya’ll’s” bubble, but Florida is not a traditional marriage state. Never has been. A law was passed in 2008 and it will be repealed in 2014, thus allowing marriage equality for all people in the state of Florida. :)

  14. TM state Says:

Thank you Educator for enlightening me but I am very well informed on the matter. Homosexual relationships and widespread immorality in general throughout history have consistently resulted in lowering of the population, moral and cultural decay, and weakening of societal institutions, lultimately eading to total collapse. Ancient Greece is only the most well known example. America is following the same frightening path. I just hope there are a few good people left to slow our decline.

  15. Cone Says:

Educator, if this petition goes through, it wouldn’t be considered “Popular Vote?” Why do we have the right to vote? Laws are passed based on popular vote. Senators, House of Representatives, President of the US are based on popular vote. Correct me if I’m wrong. I don’t believe I am legislating my feelings. I don’t believe you are doing the same as well. That is why you and I can have a respectful discussion on a sensitive topic.

  16. enough Says:

I reeally have no opinion. I lost faith in marriage after my wife cheated on me, the entire idia of marriage will be obsolete in the future. But can I open a paper or listen to a radio without gay this gay that, gay, gay, gay.

  17. Cone Says:

Tonya, if that’s the case. Let’s repeal several laws in Florida such as 10-20-Life…
You have to understand that “The People” voted on this and that is what we call democracy.

  18. rebar Says:

    This petition is totally gay.

  19. Tea Lady Says:

Thankfully, We Tea Partiers will be at the polls — in droves — to stop this godless, heathen amendment!

If the less patriotic Northern states want to bring down God’s Righteous Wrath upon themselves, then that is their business.

Marriage has been one man + one woman since the time of Abraham! And so it will remain in The Great State of Florida!

Join The Tea Party! We celebrate and protect Western Civilization! =)

  20. Educator Says:

Cone, we are a Republic, we are not directly ruled by popular vote.
Tea Lady, I was wondering when you would rear your hate filled persona. I even checked the obituary for ” housewife, garden club life member, descendant of proud confederates, etc. But, I see you are still with us.

  21. Cone Says:

Educator, thank you for the correction on the democracy. I appreciate that.

  22. Educator Says:

    Cone, you are welcome.

  23. Bert Says:

TM, you lose the argument from the start when you refer to gay people as “immoral”.

  24. Educator Says:

TM, I do doubt your historical prowness. The Greek Empire lasted and prospered for nearly 500 years ( with well documented and accepted homosexual relationships) over lapping for a bit and soon followed by the Roman Empire which also prospered for almost 500 years.(10 out of the 1st 12 Roman Emperors were homosexual, well documented) Actually the Byzantine Empire, which maintained Roman legal and cultural traditions lasted until 1453. So we actually have @ 1,800 years of homosexual equality (although it wasn’t looked at that way, it wasn’t really looked it at all, just a normal part of life) and @ 800 years of the persecution of homosexuals. The beginning of the persecution of homosexuals began with the rise of Christianity in Rome. I didn’t write history but I have surely studied it.

I support traditional marriage! The court-ordered redefinitions of marriage are against God’s law. He separated the races for a reason, and fifty years ago the courts overturned THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE and removed the bans on interracial marriage. When this country redefined marriage away from same-race marriage, God turned his back on us!

All traditional marriage defenders, if they are intellectually honest, will agree that the races should be kept separate, because marriage was redefined to allow interracial marriages.

Or are they just bigots, like people who opposed interracial marriage were just bigots?

  34. Ted the Nimble Says:

You are born gay. It’s not a choice. So, WHO cares what gay people do? Trying to stop them is like being a liberal. You are forcing your beliefs on other people using government. So Tea Lady…Quit acting like a Liberal! You are NOT a conservative!

  35. Searcher1 Says:

The CONSERVATIVE US SUPREME COURT has found that DOMA was UNCONSTITUTIONAL. Justice Anthony Kennedy, speaking for the 5-4 majority, said DOMA was unconstitutional because it violated the right to liberty and to equal protection for gay couples.

So, no matter what you want, the Court has decided that gay couples can marry. All they have to do is go to a state where marriage is LEGAL, get married and the “full faith and credit clause” will require non-marriage States (like Florida) to recognize the marriage. This is no different than the US SUPREME COURT’S LOVING Decision that allowed inter-racial couples to get married. So, score one for EQUALITY and one against INTOLERANCE.
