PBC Commissioner Shelley Vana says counterparts ignored her motion at meetingby Jennifer Sorentrue | June 12th, 2013
Palm Beach County Commissioner Shelley Vana took aim at her counterparts on Wednesday, alleging that a motion she made during a Solid Waste Authority meeting was ignored.
Vana pointed to Commissioner Priscilla Taylor, who chairs the waste authority’s governing board. Vana said that Taylor did not address her motion to extend a permit for a mulching business, even though the action had been seconded by another member of the commission.
Another commissioner, however, moved to suspend the permit. The commission ultimately approved that request.
“If you just pick which motion we will accept…that will have a chilling effect,” Vana said to Taylor.
Taylor said it was important for commissioners to discuss the item before considering a motion. Taylor suggested the two debate the issue after the meeting was over.
“If you would like to discuss that with me afterwards,” Taylor said to Vana.
“We can’t,” Vana said, pointing to the state’s Sunshine Law, which prevents commissioners from discussing items outside of a public meeting.
