Sheriff Bradshaw gets $1 million for violence prevention unit

by Dara Kam | April 29th, 2013

House and Senate budget leaders have awarded Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw $1 million for a new violence prevention unit aimed at preventing tragedies like Sandy Hook from occurring on his turf.

It’s just one-third of what Bradshaw had sought from the Legislature, but it’s a ten-fold bump from what was originally in the budget before House and Senate budget leaders finalized the state’s $74 billion budget this weekend.

Bradshaw wants to use the money for a 15-person “prevention intervention” unit made up of five deputies, five mental health professionals, five caseworkers and a 24-hour hotline where citizens can report neighbors, friends or family members they fear may harm themselves or others.

Bradshaw told lawmakers last month he hopes the hotline and the unit can stop potentially dangerous people before they act out.

Bradshaw’s proposal is a first-of-its-kind in the nation, and he hopes it will become a model for the rest of the state like his gang prevention and pill mill units.

It’s part of the magical budget conference process where House and Senate budget negotiators hash out their differences that items can get increased. In Bradshaw’s case, both the House and Senate had included $100,000 in the criminal justice budget. But over the weekend, Senate budget chief Joe Negron, R-Stuart, added another $450,000 in the Senate’s “supplemental budget” list and his House counterpart Seth McKeel, R-Lakeland, added the same amount.

The proposal still needs the blessing of Gov. Rick Scott, who has a line-item veto authority.

Bradshaw receives 1/2 of the county budget (taxpayers)money and now another million. Well, the way the deputies are killing unarmed citizens,I guess the price of bullets have gone up. can’t deny the deputies their fun.

  2. Ziggy Stardust Says:

What a scam Bradshaw has going on…Impressive to say the least

  3. What a waste Says:

Another MILLION for BRAD$HAW to spend. When will it ever end. This agency has a budget of $1.3 MILLION per day and is still getting more? Brad$haw is stealing us blind. He just hired yet ANOTHER part time “event planner” for $50K to add to the full time one he (we) are paying over $100K to plan parties? He has $300,000 worth of BBQ grills and BBQ trucks etc. UNBELIEVABLE !!!

  4. John Says:

More uninformed, disgruntled citizens..To be accurate, PBSO is not HALF the county’s budget. Palm Beach County’s Operating Budget is around 4 BILLION, so I’m not sure how 450 million is half. And to be honest, with the amount of guns/drugs/violence in Palm Beach, we probably should be spending more….As for the unarmed shootings, please tell me where in state statute it requires a criminal to be armed for a law enforcement officer to shoot him/her. Stop second guessing the Sheriff and his deputies. They do a good job in a very violent and dangerous county.

  5. 2cents Says:

Good for Ric. Something has to be done in this violent County. He get’s half the budget because he has a difficult job to do, and it takes money. I love how some of you just bag on PBSO on being trigger happy. I would like to see ANYONE of you try to do his job!!! anyone? no, I didn’t think so. I am a law obiting citizen and have NEVER had to deal with police for anything, because I am not a violent, drug dealin, out till 3 am in the morning punk. I am at home sleeping like normal people.

  6. keith Says:

Great!!!!!! Sheriff Bradshaw does a fantasticjob they should give him more money he and his police force have really cleaned up this county 100% turn around since he has been the boss great job and keep up the good work

  7. Toni Says:

My question is what does the Sheriff have on the top legislators in Tallahassee to get a cool million….to continue doing the job he is supposed to be doing already with all the money the PB County taxpayers already give him. Maybe he should use part of it to analyze why his deputies are killing so many people unnecessarily.

  8. Had Enough Says:

#4,5,6, Thank you for your input deputies. make sure Bradshaw sees your post.

  9. skd376 Says:

As a reward for his obvious talents with capitalizing on the misfortune of others, Quick Draw Ric should give his grant writer an opportunity to shoot someone or have sex with an inmate. Every other member of the department gets a chance and this guy is clearly carrying the water for the whole department.

  10. Ziggy Stardust Says:

Hey deputy John. When you take our Reserves and Transfers, the Sheriff controls about 30% of the budget.

  11. 2cents Says:

Tony, so many people are being killed because they do not know how to act like anything but an animal. You act like an animal you get treated like one. Peiod point blank!!!!BTW HAD ENOUGH!!!! I am not a deputy. The people who get shot are not just walking down the street duh!!! They are commiting acts of crime. All you haters are just a bunch of fellons!!!! And problably teaching your children to hate cops too.

  12. jenna Says:

Give it a year. See how well it works before giving up the big bucks on this new “squad”. You can receive tons of calls with no results as far a preventing crimes by mentally ill people. In that case, it does’t work or if it does, then it’s a MIRACLE!!!! At least, one is being pro-active. But Sheriff, if it’s a failure, let someone know before getting more funding…not fair to take the $$$$ for something else not intended for. Good luck with that.

  13. 2cents Says:

SO,I guess if someone commits an act of violence against you (god forbid), your gonna your mommy or PBSO? I’m guessing PBSO.

IN THE NEXT ELECTION, PLEASE VOTE AGAIST CRIME by electing Batman for Sheriff
