Sen. Bill Nelson ‘cannot envision’ a 2014 run for governorby George Bennett | March 13th, 2013
WASHINGTON — Have you heard the one about Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson running for governor in 2014?
It’s not true, Nelson’s office says after fielding some questions about the rumor in the last couple weeks.
“Right now Sen. Nelson cannot envision a circumstance under which he would run for governor. But he remains very concerned about the state’s future,” Nelson communications director Dan McLaughlin said.
Nelson was just re-elected to a third Senate term in November.
Democrats are salivating at the prospect of defeating popularity-challenged Republican Gov. Rick Scott next year. State Sen. Nan Rich, D-Weston, has opened a campaign and Republican-turned-independent-turned-Democratic former Gov. Charlie Crist is looking. Former Florida Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink and former Miami Mayor Manny Diaz are also potential Democratic candidates.
