U.S. Sen. Boxer files ‘LINE’ Act to cap voting waits at one hour

by Dara Kam | December 6th, 2012

A four hour wait to vote may be OK for Florida Gov. Rick Scott, but it’s unacceptable to U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, a California Democrat who introduced legislation targeting long lines in Florida, Virginia and Ohio.

Boxer’s proposed “LINE,” or Lines Interfere with National Elections, Act would set national standards of a maximum waiting time of one hour at any polling place in federal elections. And the bill would require states, including Florida, where voters waited in long lines to implement plans to fix the problems before the next federal election.

Boxer filed her bill the day after Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner told a state House committee that Scott set a four-hour wait as “underperforming” for county elections offices.

Boxer’s proposal would require the U.S. Attorney General to issue new national standards by Jan. 1, 2014 regarding the minimum number of voting machines, election workers, and other election resources necessary to hold federal elections, according to a press release issued by her office.

The legislation is intended “to deal directly with the problem of dysfunction at polling places around the country,” including Florida, Virginia and Ohio, the press release states.

Boxer also is pressuring U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to “take immediate steps to address the long lines experienced around the country.” Voters in some areas in Florida waited up to eight hours to cast their ballots during early voting and on Election Day.

“I will be working tirelessly to enact the LINE Act into law, but in the meantime I urge you to ensure that no citizen, regardless of ethnicity or income level, is effectively denied the right to vote by unreasonable and unnecessary lines,” Boxer wrote in a letter to Holder yesterday.

  1. Unfunded Mandate Says:

How much will this federal “unfunded mandate” to state and local governments cost local taxpayers?

Oops! Sen. Boxer forgot to include a cost analysis. Usual B.S. from D.C.

  2. DDW Says:

Better a unfunded mandate in the United States then two unfunded wars overseas.

  3. smarterthanyou Says:

Its easy. Pass a law that no Republican can vote until all the Dems have cast their ballots. They keep saying the wait isn’t a problem so LET THEM DO THE WAITING, ALL DEMS GO TO THE FRONT OF THE LINE!!

  4. Responsibility is Bucher's Says:

    1. PBC had ONLY 14 early voting sites opened!

    2. Many of those 14 sites were small and had little room for vehicles.

    3. If people of other political persuasions can get out and vote during the period of time designated, so can democrats.

    4. There are chronic problems with voting in PBC.

    5. Look to Hillsborough county which is close in size and population to PBC. Hillsborough did NOT have the problem (continual ineptness IN PB county!)during early voting!

    6. It’s the same story over and over and over in Palm Beach.

    7. Politicians are running the voting in Palm Beach County, NOT professionals.

    8. There is poor quality assurance in the Supervisor’s office. There is no excuse for having to hand duplicate over 20,000 ballots. That is just INeptness!

    9. Stop giving Bucher a pass, hold her accountable. And let’s get a PROFESSIONAL in office, no more politicians EVER AGAIN!…from democrat or republican party.

    10. Tired of PBC being the butt of jokes year after year.

  5. OhStop Says:

To: Responsiblity is Bucher’s: I could not agree with you more. The Supervisor’s office is loaded with cronies and incompetence especially when you consider the 8 hour wait at the Lantana Library. The incompetent supervisor has been kept around by Bucher because they share the same political view…League voters…not to mention the supervisor of absentee ballots…why does she still have a job? This is her third major screw up in three diffent elections. And what about the tabulation machines not counting properly. Should the idiot programing them be given leave of his job? No, no one “that’s loyal” to Bucher gets fired. Only the one’s that stand up to her and tell her she’s wrong are gone.

  6. Dave Says:

Who can argue with this? Oh.

  7. Marie Ciaravino Says:

Governor Scott should have gone to jail before he was elected. Now he is using his devious, probably illegal operating methods on the Florida elections. We need to disgrace him and vote him and all his henchmen out of office!!!!!
