West watch: no concession, no decision on challenging apparent Murphy win

by George Bennett | November 19th, 2012

Republican U.S. Rep. Allen West has neither conceded nor committed to future challenges after final results from St. Lucie, Martin and Palm Beach counties on Sunday showed Democrat Patrick Murphy winning the congressional District 18 race by 1,904 votes or 0.58 percent.

Murphy’s margin is just beyond the state’s 0.5 percent threshold for an automatic recount. And Murphy’s lead would be 242 votes larger if problem-plagued St. Lucie County hadn’t missed Sunday’s noon deadline for submitting final results after a recount of more than 37,000 ballots from early voting.

The state’s Elections Canvassing Commission will meet Tuesday morning in Tallahassee to give final certification to all elections results from across the state. Once the results are certified, West would have 10 days to contest the election — a decidedly uphill proposition.

“We will be discussing how we will move forward at some point tomorrow,” West campaign spokeswoman Michele Hickford said today.

West and his campaign publicly toned down talk of contesting the race as Sunday wore on.

Soon after St. Lucie County blew the noon deadline, West campaign manager Tim Edson declared: “This election is far from over. We will continue to fight on behalf of all voters in District 18 to ensure a fair and accurate count of their votes.”

But later in the afternoon, West issued a statement that left his options open but wasn’t as combative as Edson’s.

“We will review the results of today’s recount and the other available data to determine how to proceed. I have been humbled by the support we have received and the hard work of so many to ensure the integrity of this process,” West said.

A few hours later, West put a statement on Facebook that neither conceded nor mentioned the possibility of fighting on.

“From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank everyone for their support during this effort to ensure the integrity of our electoral process. It is truly humbling. I cannot state enough how proud I am to stand with each and every one of you, patriots all. You are the bedrock of our constitutional republic,” West wrote.

The West campaign remains interested in a report by three Florida Division of Elections auditors who were sent from Tallahassee last week by Secretary of State Ken Detzner to monitor the St. Lucie County elections office.

That report “will likely not be completed until after Thanksgiving,” Detzner spokesman Chris Cate said.

With the recount that West demanded not going his way and the vote still outside the 0.5% threshold, I don’t see any way out for West except to concede. But will the man’s hubris ever allow for that to happen in a graceful manner?

  2. David W Says:

Get a clue Allen West. FL-18 does not want you representing them. You chose them and they did not chose you. Now go back to where you came from.

  3. Rick Says:

Whether the “uncertified” vote tally from noon Sunday is used or the full re-count tabulation is substituted, Mr. West had lost the election and does not qualify for Florida’s automatic recount proviso!

The only way Mr. West can proceed now is to contest the election by proving beyond a reasonable doubt that some illegal or corrupt process took place, which would force a full District 18 re-election.

Unless Mr. West has irrefutable proof, it is time to concede and accept defeat.

  4. Atlas Shruggery Says:

You’re fifteen minutes have expired, West. You lost. Get over it.

  5. SOFLGirl Says:

    Bye Alan!!!

    See ya!!

  6. Jay S Says:

West needn’t worry about his future. He’s probably already got an offer to join Fox News and he can make enormous sums on the right wing speaker’s circuit. He also can challenge Murphy in 2014 when most Democratic voters are back asleep. Might even win his way back into the House. Hey, Alan Grayson did it.

  7. SUE Says:

Hey West…don’t let the door kick you in the axx. Enough is enough. You lost. The West campaign better be paying for these recounts. Oh by the way, take Tealady and Scott with you…Hey Scott…tick, tick…

  8. joeyf Says:

West, you look more foolish with every passing moment. Bye bye.

  9. Steve Says:

West is low class garbage. He will never concede because he is not a man. He lost in the first count. He lost in the 2nd count, and he lost again. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

  10. DDW Says:

Thank you Mr. West for your years of service but we no longer need your services here.
Georgia is calling and they want you to be the voice of the G.O.P. in Atlanta and that is the place for you to go.
    Enjoy the road trip.
I wish you could make a side trip to Tallahassee and gather up Rick Scott along the way but we have two more years of the C.E.O./C.F.O. of “Insurance Kingdom” to deal with. Perhaps a forwarding address and the two of you can get together in two years as he is passing through Atlanta on his way to where ever as long as he is northbound to someplace other than here in Florida.

  11. JustMeee Says:

Don’t go way mad, Allen, just go away.

  12. Legal Eagle Says:

    @ JustMeee

I agree with you about all these counts and recounts but, Looking at past comments a lot of people have said it falls out if you let go of it. Also the size of it seemed to be rather large.

But, I found that if your partner goes slowly and uses LOTS of lubrication(you can never use enough)it goes in with ease and the vibrations! Wow!

It takes some getting used to. Trying to tell your partner the location on where to shove it takes some time too. But, when the SPOT is found…again…WOW! You’ll want more!

I didn’t leak but they say you might not or it might take multiple entries for you to start leaking out some semen from the prostate. You might even feel it all the way up to the head portion too!

  13. Christopher Tracy Says:

Please just go away Mr. West. The world doesn’t want you around anymore.

The Allen West Experiment is over. Take a couple of years off and recalibrate.

  14. R Scott Says:

Old Generals like West do not fade away.

  15. Bill Says:

West is getting old but he’s no General. Considering West is a pathological liar I’m sure he has said he is, but he isn’t. Just for shock value West should pretend he’s a man and concede.

  16. West Is a Tool Says:

Prediction 2025: Allen West slinging hash at an I-10 Waffle House, humming, “What a long, strange trip it’s been…”

  17. Michael Cohen Says:

I hope the RNC spends millions on legal fees to challenge the vote. West will lose in the end and that money will not be available for the 2014 elections.
We Democrats should encourage him to keep contesting the election and drain the RNC of its money.

  18. weather or not Says:

    @ Michael Cohen

LOL!!!I like the way you think.

    Good post!!

  20. DDW Says:

    @Michael Cohen,
    What a grand Idea.
Man up Mr. West, No is not the answer you want, so run up the tab. Cash that G.O.P. check. Show that little piss ant what is up when he takes on the man. Tell the world to bring it on. Keep it in the courts until the chickens come home.
We love you Allen, please don’t go.
I would never make it as a politician. I can only lie for so long and then I get the giggles and a goofy grin.

  21. R Scott Says:

Seems as though West’s promotion to General had something to do with the chronic shortage of Generals in the American military.

  22. Tom Brown Says:

It is just possible that Mr. West is alarmed that an expected “win” didn’t pan out, much as the shock experienced by Karl Rove, when Ohio precincts didn’t turn out the way he expected.

    Thom Hartmann explains all…

  23. Bill Says:

@Michael Cohen, but wouldn’t the DNC also have to spend money defending itself against West’s lunacy? I’m not a lawyer, so ya’ll can fill me in. I do know that West is sub-human garbage, and that has nothing to do with his politics.

  24. DDW Says:

    @ Bill,
I think it would go something like,
Allen West verses the state of Florida and the taxpayers would pick up the tab for the state.
Damn it. Just when it was getting fun.

  25. Bernie Oliver Says:

  26. Cheryl Says:

Please Mr. West – just “Man Up” and admit dfeat. You are only embarassing yourself and your family. Your attorney is happy because he gets to bill you. Do your adopted district a favor and shut up!!!

  27. My Country Says:

Allen West, you’re a disgrace!!!Get out of my country, you commie, THUG WAR CRIMINAL!!

  28. ULF Janson Says:

Isn’t it time or West to get out of the counry and go back to Africa?????

  29. CreativeConservative Says:

As a conservative I say it is time for West to step aside. Indeed his 15 minutes are up. Lindsey Graham said it best when referring to Mr. Rommney’s gifts comment the other day, “when you are in a hole, stop digging.” Our party is in a hole, Col. West’s rhetoric is causing that hole to grow deeper. The race is over. Let’s move on.

  30. LRT Says:

    It’s a done deal…
All this is just attention seeking now…
    Get over it…move on..
Go do something good for a change.

  31. Jupiter Guy Says:

If mr. west had any honor he would bow out quietly, and then come back in four years and try again someplace else. Nobody is going to vote for the guy that files lawsuit after lawsuit.

  32. Bill Says:

ULF, I don’t like that comment because it’s the exact sort of thing West would say if West was white.

  33. CreativeConservative Says:

Especially a candidate who stands on a platform for tort reform. It is very hypocritical. It damages the party.

  34. SciGuy Says:

West moved from his last district to another further north so he could run again and keep his Congressional insurance and pension while insulting anyone who doesn’t agree with him and more. Well moving further north to Georgia where he has been invited to run again, should be so easy for someone like him. The longer he continues to question the county that didn’t give him a majority only serves to embarass the GOP even more. He has had more than his 15 minutes of “fame” and needs to lick his wounds and then just fall on his sword.

  35. Steve Says:

West is a hypocrite on tort reform. He got kicked out of the army, nearly court-marshalled. He ran away from his district, the 22nd, only to get kicked out of congress. West is not only a sore loser. He’s sore. And a loser.

  36. Soylent Green Says:
