Scott issues $10,000 challenge to state colleges

by John Kennedy | November 26th, 2012

Gov. Rick Scott, who has been trying to rein-in the cost of higher education in Florida, fired off a challenge Monday to state college leaders — urging they create bachelor’s degree programs costing no more than $10,000.

Such degrees at Florida state colleges — formerly known as community colleges — currently average $13,264, said Randy Hanna, chancellor of the Florida College System.

“Today, what I’m doing is saying to our state colleges, ‘Can you come up with $10,000-degrees, where people can get great jobs…so you could live your version of the American dream,’” Scott told a Tampa television station, before announcing his proposal in an appearance at St. Petersburg College.

Most of Scott’s earlier questioning of higher education costs have been directed at the State University System, where the latest round of tuition increases of from 9 percent to 15 percent, have boosted the average annual rate to $6,232 this fall — 41st highest in the nation.

But the State College System now serves almost 900,000 students, with enrollment rising with the slow economy.

Hanna said the “logistics still have to be worked out,” on the governor’s challenge. But Hanna said he expected individual colleges to embrace the idea of offering at least one popular degree program at the lower rate that is aimed at getting students out into the local work force.

It cost me 20K to get an Associates! I never heard of a Bachelors costing 10K……what the….???

  2. SteveinWPB Says:

A full Medical Degree(MD) also should cost no more than $100,000! Increasing the numbers of doctors and dentists will create jobs and bring down our riduculously high health care costs.

  3. BaxterBedford Says:

The continued dumbing-down of America. It will be a bunch of completely online courses, I’m sure. Meanwhile the people on Palm Beach will get their idiot children into Ivy League schools where they’ll make the contacts that assure them prosperity in the future.

  4. reality Says:

Why would anyone care. They are on the Obama plan and don’t have to pay for college because they are indigent. Even if they do, they will just take student loans out and default on the loans when they realize that it does take more than a degree to land the job that “will allow them to live the American dream”.

  5. czubek Says:

These degrees will most likely be in healthcare,… i.e. wheelchair drivers and bedpan engineers.

  6. Searcher Says:

Meanwhile Scoot is allowing the creation of a new University, just to pay back a former Legislator. What a JOKE. Welcome to one term land, Gov. Scott. And you can’t buy re-election either!

  7. sam Says:

Florida reduced funding to higher education by 12% in 2012 with a 25% reduction in the last three years, how does Scott expect to attract good students and good businesses with a bad record when it comes to support of education and higher education.

  8. Brotherdavid Says:

Why is every school that was a Community College when I was young now a State College. That title gives once community colleges the right to charge more and less people the ability to have access to education.

    @ Searcher
“you can’t buy re-election”? Well, in your case, it is obvious you can’t buy a good education either. If I were you, I would demand my money back! Also
When I first saw it, I chuckled.
When she saw it she did the same.
But… it slides in easily (lubed sparingly)
Once in… the effect is interesting.
Holds gently open. Shining a torch in creates reflection due to clear plastic, but with patience can get a good viewing angle.
It is worth buying and using even once – just so you have done it.
Although… I will do it again.
    But maybe not tonight….

  11. Proton Says:

You are mis-informed. Communitiy colleges became state colleges when they were given the authority to offer bachelor’s degrees that cost 40 to 50 percent less than state universities in Florida. Now the Gov. wants to cut the costs by 25%. Public State Colleges are already the best deal out there and they are still open door at the lower division (associate degree) level.

  12. olricky Says:

This is possible. Those of you with degrees from 30-40 years ago, remember all those courses you HAD to take to graduate? I do! Get rid of the “Fluff” classes. If your just out of High School, why take “College Algebra” or “College English”? Of course that assumes you passed HS algebra and English. Next do away with ALL “remedial” classes in anything. There is no reason that a college degree should take more than 3 years.(regular B.A or B.S)

  13. SheliaJoy Says:

This makes no sense. FL state colleges are some of the cheapest in the US. Why cheapen the degree by $3000?

One term Scott should replace the money taken from higher education so that the state of FL can service the students who want to take classes at state colleges.

  14. DDW Says:

This is the way Mr. Scott purposes to help the education process and put in place those 700,000 jobs, jobs, jobs he promised back when he was buying an election for Governor. If Mr.Scott and G.O.P. crusaders placed education as important as privatizing prisons and insurance companies bottom lines. The world would be a better place and Florida would be more then just a place to visit for Disney World.
    Mr. Scott and G.O.P. comrades,
1 year, 11 months and 9 days to go before you are elected out of office, but who is counting.

  15. Jack Reed Says:

This is just another Rick Scott scam in, unfortunately for Floridians, a continuing series of scams.
This is all about one thing – eliminating more state jobs. Lowering the cost by such a minuscule amount will not improve either education or the graduates job prospects. In fact, the overriding demand according to all those “employers” out there is for high-tech trained applicants – and that’s not realistic at $10K for a B.S. or B.A.S.
I see that Texas is the other state considering this scam. Great, two of the worst states in the country for education trying to get even worse. Just like drug testing people who don’t do drugs, while passing on banning texting while driving, Scott knows a good scam when he sees one. By far, Scott is the worst plague ever visited upon this fair state.

  16. CLASS WAR Says:

This country is living in the midst of a permanent Civil War between the rich and the rest of us.

They are INTENTIONALLY trying to subjugate the American population so they can better control us.

America will fall further and further into a society built on modern slavery if we continue electing CRIMINALS to govern our states and our country.

    The “Cheap” college degree?

Look at what they think about us!!!

    They think we’re stupid!!!

Making one “degree” for poor people and one “degree” for the children of the wealthy is a STUPID idea, unless your goal is a caste system in America.

If your idea of “America” is the “American Dream” then this latest ploy should shock your senses.

    The American Dream is dead.

And now they are moving forward with their plans to segregate us by our wealth.

    It’s time we FIGHT THEM.

If you are going to be 18 years old on Election Day of November 2014 then you need to sign up and join the fight for YOUR OWN FUTURE starting TODAY.

There are plenty of ways to get involved. Go to Facebook and LIKE “Awake the State”, “Pink Slip Rick” to get started. We are building a movement and we are going to FIGHT the Plutocrats with everything we have. Because our future — not just yours and mine but our entire COUNTRY’s future — literally depends on it.

    Let’s roll.
