Florida Congressional Democrats seek federal probe of voting law

by Dara Kam | November 27th, 2012

Florida’s Democratic U.S. House members, including Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, have asked the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights to hold a hearing regarding Florida’s voting law that shrunk the number of early voting days, required more voters to cast provisional ballots and was intended to curb voter registration by outside groups.

The Democratic delegation asked for the hearing based on a report in The Palm Beach Post on Sunday that detailed how Republican Party of Florida consultants and staff sought to alter Florida’s early voting laws in the aftermath of the 2008 election to curb Democratic turnout.

“In light of these allegations, we are extremely concerned over the integrity of this law and the justification for its implementation,” U.S. Reps. Alcee Hastings, Corrine Brown, Kathy Castor, Ted Deutch, Frederica Wilson and Wasserman Schultz wrote to U.S. Commission on Civil Rights Chairman Martin Castro in a letter sent today. “As you know, trust in our democracy is what holds our country together. Voters must be able to trust that their elected officials are acting in their best interest.”

The commission held hearings in Florida in the aftermath of the protracted 2000 election and made numerous recommendations based on its findings, many of which were included in the Help America Vote Act passed by Congress in 2002.

To the leaders of the G.O.P.. The house of cards is coming down with the rats fleeing the boat filled with the thieves. A vote suppressed is a vote stolen.
1 year 11 months and 8 days to go, but who’s counting.

  2. Brian O'Donaghey Says:

A hearing is merely a dog and pony show. We need a full-blown, non-partisan, independent investigation focusing on the dirty tricks by BOTH parties. Followed by an independent prosecutor if criminal wrongdoing is uncovered.

  3. inandoutoflove Says:

Wow Wasserman Shultz is really scraping the bottom of the barrel on this one..what a bottom feeder. You get the right to vote, period. Many states don’t even have early voting, the election is over, move on.

  4. Pig Party Says:

Strange how Crist and Greer were praised and worshipped when they were selected by all Republicans as their best and brightest who epitomized republican values and goals. Now they’re reviled once they reveal the factual truths of the very methods they were selected to do so that republicans can retain complete power, control, and information. And don’t think the Democrats wouldn’t do the same thing. Both are Pig Parties, cancers in our society.

  5. BaxterBedford Says:

I’m just glad that the GOP’s efforts to effect the election by monkeying around with various aspects of the election, from a voter I.D. law that was being implemented in such a way so as to disenfranchise Democrats to a significantly greater degree, to their contraction of early voting, is finally being closely examined and exposed. For those in the GOP that want it to have a place in the future of our country, you need to get your house in order.

  6. Owlguin Says:

There is inevitability in the fact that whomever has too much power abuses that power. It is true with Republicans, Democrats, unions, non union forces. The Repulicans in this state will likely pay dearly for this, just like the Democrats did in the US House in 2010.

  7. Bito Says:

I hope TRICKY RICK SNOTT get`s whats coming to him and get`s locked up where he belongs, IN PRISON, for trying to fix the election, it`s time to send them the message.

  8. ANTON CANADA Says:

AND OUR GREAT GOVERNOR, SKELETOR SCOTT, THE MOST DESPICABLE THIEF EVER ELECTED IN THIS COUNTRY, IS THE ONE WHO PUSHED AND PRODDED AND THREATENED TO IMPLEMENT ALL THOSE CHANGES TO BENEFIT THE GOP..

HE NEEDS TO GO!! TROUBLE IS HE GETS TO KEEP ALL THOSE MILLIONS HE STOLE FROM MEDICARE… NEED A WAY TO MAKE HIM SUFFER….

  9. Really? Says:

    Election Day.
    One day.
    12 hours to vote.
    7AM to 7PM.

That’s how it should be, instead of spoon-feeding folks who can’t, or won’t, take responsibility.

  10. SUE Says:

It is time that voting was fair and square. It is time that every State where there was a problem, especially Florida, is checked and doublechecked to see how the Loser Repubs/teamorons tried and tried to rig the election like they did when the biggest loser Bush was elected. And by the way, Scott…tick, tick, tick…you’re done…we will remember all the tricks you played on us and election day will be our payback to you…you’re fired.

  11. ricardus Says:

One of the big problems we have in this country is the progressives’ idea that we have a “democracy”. This belief allows for a whole host of problems that we see with socialists now in charge of our country. This is a result of poor education in the government schools.
The United States of America is a REPUBLIC !!! It is not a democracy.

  12. Bito Says:

@Really? You truly are an ignorant moron, there where long lines even with early voting days, How dumb REALLY ARE YOU? folks take resposibility by going to work and putting food on the table, but being part of the 1% you wouldnt know anything about a hard days work, to make a comment like that, YOU IGNORAMUS.

  13. Brian Says:

The damage the Republicans tried to wreak because of their voting changes was overcome by an even stronger desire from voters to VOTE. I definitely want this fixed for the next election, nonetheless trying to punish the perpetrators ex post facto seems like partisan rubbing it in their faces and doesn’t really accomplish much.

  14. Rey Santos Says:

The Federal should consider the actions of the Republican Party has a whole and prosecute the members under the Federal RICO act.

  15. RENEGADE Says:

    ricardus

Thats an utterly ignorant statement! What a moton. Yes we are a Constitutional Republic but we are still a Democratically elected Republic!!One of the many forms of Democratic Government!!

  16. RENEGADE Says:

    @Really,

I have a better idea. Let the Dems have early voting since they want it and let the Repugnants vote only on election day since they seem to think thats the way they should do it!!

  17. Kevin Says:

It’s a well known indisputable fact that when Americans get out and vote in higher numbers it helps Democrats win elections. Republicans know this and feel it’s their patriotic duty to subvert the ability of lower income people who are more likely to vote Democrat to vote. They are not doing it to be racist they are just trying to leverage a known statistic in hopes of propelling their candidate to victory. This last election was proof that a growing majority of reasonably minded people are not buying the right wing double speak propaganda. Even though Republicans spent considerably more cash than Democrats on advertisements they did not prevail. I believe that with the help of so called Tea Party activist’s we have reached a tipping point where republicans will begin loosing elections until they are willing to govern from the center. Because we have seen what’s on the extreme right and it’s ugly. If republicans stay on the same path it won’t matter how much money they poor into their lye machine used for tearing down their opponents. They will surely be made irrelevant within a couple more election cycles.

  18. K. Kraft Says:

To those of us outside Florida, last minute changes to voting processes was clearly a despicable act by the Governor, and is still being defended right now by the GOP on CNN. Are there really fools out there who believe changing voting rules right before an election was done for oh ….money savings? ALL elections for Federal Officials, Congress/Senate/President MUST be subject to the SAME procedure in every state; unchangeable by any partisan state officials. No wonder state GOP Governors want block grants for Medicaid; think how that could be abused as well?

  20. Searcher Says:

Tick, Tock. Tick, Tock. Gov. Scott’s time is coming to an end and a few Repbbies in the Legislature will join him. Tick, Tock!

  21. All voters had the Same Time Period Says:

If the republicans can get themselves to the polls and vote, so can democrats.

As a matter of fact, our democrat president won in November along with our democrat senator!

    Suggestions:
    MORE early voting sites
LIMITING the # of Amendments on ballot
    LIMITING the wording of Amendments

Democrats are just ‘scaring’ the masses with their ‘talk’ of repressing voters.

Tired of the democrat hype and talking points constantly displayed in this newspaper.

  22. Where are the hispanics? Says:

Debbie Wasserman Schultz is a rich goon.

Ron Paul will peel off young republicans and democrats on his college speaking tours.

Democrats rarely criticize each other in public. It’s a unified front.

Republicans constantly criticize each other in public. It’s a divided party and the democrats are joining in the chorus.

  23. Tampa articles = DAILY Democrat talking points Says:

All articles out of Tampa are democrat talking points sent out to democrat dominated newspaper editors.

So everytime you read something on “Post on Politics” from a Tampa source…it’s the democrat media ‘talk for the day’ regurgitated in the Post Times.

  24. Lil' Debbie Says:

Lil’ Debbie is the perfect poster girl for a Democrat – a shrill, angry, unhappy fanatic. You won the election Debbie Debutante – chill out, smile, enjoy the sunshine…

  25. OBIWAN Says:

@All voters had the Same Time Period

If your tired of it then you must be pretty ignorant and stupid to still be reading it now aren’t you!!!

  26. OBIWAN Says:

    Lil’ Debbie

Actually the shrill, angry, unhappy fanatic lost. BYE BYE ALLEN WASTE!!!
