#16trillionfail? Paid Twitter tag to criticize Obama backfires for Republicans

by Andrew Abramson | September 6th, 2012

In 2008, Democrats owned the social media message, helping propel Barack Obama to the presidency.

In 2012, Republicans have largely caught up on the Internet. According to various reports, Americans for Prosperity, a conservative-leaving Political Action Committee linked to Koch Brothers, has spent at least $1.3 million on digital anti-Obama ads in the last two weeks.

But they might have over-thought the idea to spend $120,000 to buy sponsored Tweets that includes the hash tag #16trillionfail. The idea was to have people Tweeting about the country’s $16 trillion deficit.

Instead, Twitter users have been using the hash tag to blame Republicans.

Here are a few of the most recent Tweets with #16trillionfail:

@milque: $360,000+ paid by @MittRomney to Twitter for 3 days of 3 failed promoted trends? That’s what I call sensible spending! #16TrillionFail

@JSTwiss: GOP blames Obama for size of deficit…imagine how much smaller it would be if Romney had actually paid taxes #16TrillionFail #2012Forward

@Picassokat: Just after start of $4trill Iraq War, Majority Whip Mitch McConnell rammed thru Congress, 1st wartime tax cut in U S history #16TrillionFail

@BubbyKatz: #16TrillionFail Worst recession since the great depression – yep – Republicans Built That !

@WaveWit: #16trillionfail #Arithmetic: Debt increase by president: Reagan 186%, Bush 54%, Clinton 41%, Bush II 72%, Obama 23%. Source CBO #forward2012

While most of the recent #16trillionfail Tweets are pro-Obama, there have been a couple of recent anti-Obama Tweets using the tag:

@TheTeaParty_net: #DNC can’t hide the fact that we are over 8% UNEMPLOYMENT! No one believes their lies. #tcot #gop #teaparty #tlot #16trillionfail

@NASAguy: President Obama has fought hard for a #16trillionfail !

    The ultimate irony: Young misguided voters, those with the most to lose under Obama’s nanny-state vision for America, also tend to support Obama & utilize Twitter.

    There is hope. Twitter is buzzing about the stupidity of the DNC for pushing the ’3 times’ God vote. Congressman Allen West has a new ad describing the Dems latest stumble.

    Great work tweeters – keep it up and drive the billionaire Koch brothers to the brink. They run the political ad group Americans for Prosperity, it should be renamed as “Billionaires for more Prosperity for Billionaires.”

    Romney doesn’t seem to be having any good luck. His convention was a bust thanks to the “empty chair” trick. He has foot in mouth disease, won’t come clean on his taxes, stated that he wasn’t concerned about the poor, lacks in foreign policy, embarassed American’s while he was over seas. His wife couldn’t make her husband any more human like because he is still out of touch with middle America. He isn’t fit to run this country. Blunder and bloopers.

    When I originally commented I clicked the “Notify me when new comments are added” checkbox
    and now each time a comment is added I get four emails with
    the same comment. Is there any way you can remove people from that service?
    Appreciate it!
