Much of the time those dues support candidates the members themselves would never vote to elect, but they have no say in the matter. The union bosses show up in busses and take the workers to the site of the protest and hand them printed signs and tell them to walk or else. You can always tell a union rally from one engendered by the true feelings of those walking. The latter come with home made signs, the unions with pre-printed ones--done at a union shop, of course. And if you think unions are the end all and be all then explain to me why they were able to get the president to bypass bankruptcy law, throw the bond holders--ordinary people like you and me--under the bus and give the unions all thge wealth at GM. The only reason GM's sales figures are up is because Mr. Executive Orders mandate that all govt. agencies had to buy GM vehicles, esp. Volts. That's right, first your taxes bailed out GM and now they are buying Volts with your taxes. Of course, BHO and union presidents wouldn't be caught dead in a Volt, they're just for the peasants.
