Allen West: ‘Where’s the outrage from Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton and the NAACP?’by George Bennett | August 10th, 2012
UPDATED with response from Patrick Murphy’s campaign
U.S. Rep. Allen West, R-Palm Beach Gardens, says an ad depicting him punching white women would make liberals “apoplectic” if a Republican used it against a black Democrat. But West, appearing on Fox News this morning, says a double standard applies to black conservatives like himself.
“On the left they believe that when you look at black conservatives, especially, they feel that they have an open game,” West said. “You know, where’s the outrage from Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton and the NAACP about this? They’re not going to say anything because they’re nothing but an effective wing of the Democrat Party whatsoever and they have effectively kept them well placed so that they can continue to have a black electorate voting bloc.”
The ad was produced by American Sunrise PAC, which is largely financed by Coastal Construction CEO Thomas Murphy Jr., whose son, Patrick Murphy, is West’s likely general election opponent.
“I would find it hard to believe that the son does not know that the dad is running this superPAC and what the dad is doing,” West said.
The Murphy campaign wouldn’t comment Thursday, saying it had nothing to do with the ad. Today, however, it offered this statement:
“The Murphy campaign had nothing to do with the content or creation of this ad. However, it is amazing to hear Allen West complain considering he recently called Social Security ‘slavery,’ said the President is trying to ‘enslave’ Americans, and told a female colleague she was ‘vile and despicable.’ Further, it is telling that West does not dispute the votes cited in the ad, including his vote to dismantle Medicare, open up the prescription drug donut hole, and against women’s healthcare and insurance coverage. He even voted against the Violence Against Women Act. His anti-senior and anti-woman record is clear.”
