I’m losing faith in Rep West. It was reckless last week to suddenly change his mind on a bill only because of pressure from the beef and pork industries. The bill he pulled back on would phase in, over 15 to 18 years, improvements in egg production, including a labeling program for consumers so they understand their food suppliers.

Not only do consumers deserve this right, H.R. 3798 is a compromise between The Humane Society of the United States and the United Egg Producers themselves, which are the two main groups in their respective fields. Lawmakers should encourage that kind of compromise and problem-solving and not kowtow to special interests that have zero economic stake in the industry. West has made a bad blunder here. He’s a man who casts himself as resolute and principled, but his capitulation on this issue shows that his self-description does not tell the whole story.

Changing his mind threw us all under the Special Interest-driven bus yet again. How can we trust legislators that clearly are going to support big corporate interests over ours?
