Obama leaves Palm Beach County, cancels Orlando event because of Colorado shootingby George Bennett | July 20th, 2012
While staying at the Ritz-Carlton in Manalapan, President Obama was told at 5:26 a.m. today of the mass shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, the White House said. Obama was notified by his Homeland Security Advisor, John Brennan .
Obama issued a statement shortly after 7 a.m. saying he and First Lady Michelle Obama are “shocked and saddened by the horrific and tragic shooting in Colorado.”
Obama left Palm Beach International Airport on Air Force One shortly after 9:30 a.m. He’s heading to Fort Myers, where a campaign event was scheduled. He will address the shooting there, the White House said.
Obama has cancelled an afternoon campaign event in Winter Park near Orlando “in light of the tragedy in Colorado,” the White House announced.
