Allen West’s year as a teacher goes from laugh line to campaign theme

by George Bennett | July 23rd, 2012

New mailer and TV ad highlight the year West taught high school.

If you’ve heard Republican U.S. Rep. Allen West speak about his life history, you’ve probably heard him say something like this: “When I first retired from the military back in 2004 after 22 years, I taught high school for a year. And that was such an enjoyable experience that I volunteered to go back to Afghanistan.”

In a new 30-second TV ad and a mailer sent to voters in Palm Beach-Broward congressional District 18, West says that year in the classroom helped shape his views about education policy.

“As a former high school teacher, I have seen firsthand how the educational bureaucracy is leaving behind America’s children,” West says in the mailer.

Read about it in this week’s Politics column (third item).

  1. Anybody BUT West Says:

After teaching High School for a year, West decides to go back to Afghanistan? That must have been one hell of a High School. How does one follow the other? After teaching High School for a year West is now an “expert” in education in America. Please, just more B.S. from the B.S. expert who has no shame. Surprised that West didn’t use his “teaching experience” to find some Commie teachers in the school system along with the socialists. West is nothing more than a parasite living off the public. He went to a public college which the taxpayers supported. He went into the military which taxpayers pay for. He taught High School which is taxpayer supported. Now he is a Congressman living off the taxpayers. West certainly knows how to live at taxpayers expense. What a piece of work as in closeted socialist! Hope this next election means the end of living off the taxpayers of this country for West.

  2. Crazy West Says Says:

Congressman West supports eliminating the Department of Education which would cut $11 billion in education funding to Florida schools and students. Under the West plan, Pell grant funding for college students, job training, teacher grants, special education programs, and school improvement grants would all be slashed.

Even as Florida students face a 15 percent tuition hike, Congressman West thinks Florida students shouldn’t have access to “communist” student loans and Pell grants.

  3. tornado Says:

Congressman Allen West’s “teaching” in the classroom expands to more then simply teaching for one year in a “civilian” high school. He has been training some of the worlds most elite forces in all walks of life, men and women in our US Armed forces. Molding and shaping minds is not doesn’t mean you have to be in a “classroom” for it to count as “education”.

Congressman West received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Tennessee and his master’s degree in political science from Kansas State University. He also earned a master of military arts and sciences degree from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff Officer College in political theory and military history and operations.

As is stated in his video, with a GOOD EDUCATION any child can live the American Dream. Meaning in anything they choose to do including educating, teaching and shaping the lives of those who serve in the United States Military.

    Honorable

  4. Inbreeding Democrats Says:

The democrats, who support Dave Aronberg for State Attorney, are the group who continue to deride this black man.

Anything to get a democrat elected.

Palm Beach County is KNOWN as Corruption County for a reason. Since politics in Palm Beach County is dominated by democrats, it is they who gave our county a bad name.

The old democrats-aaronson, seigel are breeding the same ilk in the ‘new’ democrats-aronberg. The poisonous tactics, the inbreeding are corrupting Palm Beach County.

    Shame on them!

  5. Crazy West Says Says:

So Allen West had some of his education paid for by the military? That sounds very socialist.
