UPDATE: Allen West calls Social Security ‘a form of slavery’

by Dara Kam | July 9th, 2012

Tea party firebrand U.S. Rep. Allen West likened Social Security to a “form of slavery” in an interview on Fox News this weekend.

West, running for a second term in Congress in the new Palm Beach County-Treasure Coast District 18, said the number of Americans going on Social Security disability is higher since 2009 than the number of new jobs created, blaming President Obama for “creating this sense of economic dependence, which to me is a form of modern, 21st-century slavery.”

West blamed the “liberal media” for misrepresenting his comments in a post on his Facebook page.

“Over the weekend I was on Fox & Friends discussing the growing number of Americans becoming dependent on government programs from food stamps to social security disability. Of course the liberal media is now putting words in mouth and saying I attacked Social Security. The fact is, I will work to protect Social Security and Medicare for our seniors and for future generations. It is too bad the media refuses to report on the failed economic policies of Washington liberals and the dependency culture career politicians are creating to expand their political power,” West said in the post.

West opted to run for the new district instead of seeking reelection to his newly redrawn District 22 seat where Democrats now have a 9-point edge. West’s race against Democrat Patrick Murphy is one of the most high-profile Congressional battles in the state.

Murphy’s campaign jumped on West’s Social Security-bashing, pointing out in a press release that residents over the age of 65 make up about 22 percent of District 18.

“Our seniors have worked their whole lives for a safety net that will allow them to retire with dignity, and Allen West is intent on doing anything he can to make it disappear,” Murphy’s campaign manager Anthony Kusich said.

A week ago, West accused President Obama of wanting to enslave Americans with government programs.

“He does not want you to have the self-esteem of getting up and earning and having that title of American. He’d rather you be his slave,” West told the crowd at a campaign event in Port St. Lucie.

  1. Rick Says:

How sad, first they don’t want you to have umemployment benefits, and now they don’t want you to have social security. OK Mr. West, how should the elderly pay for lodging, and food? How sad that regular people vote for them over and over again….

  2. Murphy is an Idiot Says:

What Congressman West was referring to is the increase in SSI; either the barfly fool (Murphy) is siezing on an opportunity or he just doesn’t know the difference. Either way, he has no position.

  3. West is a Moron! Says:

Just more of the same drivel from the drivel expert. Mr. West, your ridiculous utterances should convince anyone with a brain that you are a complete idiot and those in district 18 who want a real Congressman will surely not vote for you. Crowder ought to beat West easily. Wests mental capacity is suspect but his insane diatribes get him lots of publicity of the wrong kind. We all anxiously wait the next loony statement that will help elect someone else. ANYONE but West!

  4. Downtown Danny Says:

If West had been injured while serving you can bet he’d be happy to collect the $1700 a month paid in SS Disability.
Please vote this carpet bagging clown out of office.

  5. ??? Says:

In the video clip, he refers to “the unemployed going onto social security disability” rather than finding a job. He’s blaming Obama for his “failed economic policies” rather than looking in his own backyard at our wonderful governor Rick Snott. How many jobs did this governor kill due to his own greed and personal vendettas? Give us a break. The process to receive SS Disability is grueling and drawn out, it’s not like applying for unemployment. Another example of Alan West showing his ignorance by making asinine comments about a subject he knows NOTHING about.

  6. FrankLucas Says:

Why shouldn’t I collect SSI, get me handicapped tag, and then work under the table?

It’s how we keep it real.

  7. WPB Resident Says:

    This man is UNBELIEVABLE!!!

  8. Looney Tunes Says:

    Put those invalids to Work!
Why just cause you have no limbs doesn’t mean you can’t run a plow.

This is not the first time West has taken aim at those who have the misfortune of being handicapped.

  9. Realist Says:

Mr. West, I’ve gotten to the point where I wish that you would just shut up. Unfortunately, I don’t have the cushy retirement program that members of the House and Senate have carved out for themselves. I will be depending on Social Security. So I would appreciate it if you would just leave it alone.

  10. ??? Says:

@FrankLucas: NOT EVERYONE DEFRAUDS THE GOVT.!! SSI Disability and job creation have NOTHING to do with each other. Look up the number of Florida residents who have applied for and receive SSI Disability during the past 10 years. The unemployed & recent new recepients of SSI Disability have not risen enough to make this claim. Rick Scott should be happy there are so many Floridians receiving SSI Disability. Profits rise at his medical clinics. WIN WIN for everyone! To keep our governor honest, make him sell his health clinics. Yeah, right. What a bunch of clowns.

  11. Tee Says:

So all those old people who are stupid enough to keep going to listen to this fool, I guess they are all slaves? Because we know they are all receiving SS. Just wait until the Republicans turn their Medicare into a voucher program! Haaaaaaa. Go Allen West!

  12. Detest West Says:

Coming from a guy you has sucked off the tit of Liberty and Freedom his whole life.

  13. sign o the times Says:

What social security is: a portion of a persons income contributed over a lifetime of work. Those contributions are entrusted to the Federal Gov. to invest on my behalf. That investment is not an entitlement. It is my wages pooled with all American workers and invested by the government for a SAFE and modest return. It is meant to garantee at least a basic income in retirement. Growing up we were taught that the 3 pillars to a secure retiremnt are personal savings, a pension or now unfortunately a 401k, and social security. Responsibly executed this should make for a dignified retirement after a life of work. Now, these Wall St. con men and corrupt politicians are trying to STEAL one pillar of my retirement to gamble away at Pete Petersen’s hedge fund.

Raise the income cap! Fix the damned problem and make good on the promuises Uncle Sam made to the middle class over 1/2 a century. Eat the rich!

  14. seeithappening Says:

He is absolutely right! Scores of young adults often get a check because at some point in there schooling, a parent was able to get a disability check for the kid with dyslexia or ADD. Now the kids are 20, 21 years old and won’t work because they’ll make too much money and lose the check! The parents won’t let these kids work…they’d rather get a gov’t check! The family uses the money and the kid is left with very little.

  15. Say anything Do anything Says:

This is the say anything Do anything congressman. He degrades everything and will never build anything. What a waste of time to even read his pathetic comments. Join rush Limbaugh and become an entertainer because you are not a serious person at all. YOU ARE A SHAMEFUL JOKE!

  16. MARVIN Says:

    I AGREE

  17. rukiddingme? Says:

We have way more reason to be proud of our congressman Allen West than those fools who keep electing the criminal Alcee Hastings to office. Those of you idiots who just can’t get off of the government entitlement programs will always be frightened of someone like Allen West when he speaks the truth.

  18. Mimi Says:

Seeithappening, cite your sources and factual statistics for your claims. You can’t. You’ve heard some dubious story, probably from a rabid talk show rant or some such unreliable person who has heard a story…. There may be a few cheats, but not many.

It’s hard to get SSI benefits…. Many who deserve and have great need get turned down.

Alan West is a prejudiced, I’ll informed man who spouts nonsense. He deserves to get his arse whooped this fall. Working men and women should realize that voting for him is a vote of support for the fat cats and 1%, not for working people’s best interests.

  19. To Sign o the times Says:

Dear Sign o Times: You’ve been smoking something out of Al Gore’s Lock-box. The government spent all that money you contributed over your lifetime. All that’s left is IOU’s from the Federal Government, which is the only thing that distinguishes SS from Bernie Madoff. The Trust Fund already pays out more than it collects, and with the ratio of workers to recipients continuing to fall, this will only accelerate.

Also, the SCOTUS has ruled that receiving SS is not a right (Fleming v. Nestor). You are at the mercy of government. (That’s part of the basis for “privatizing” a portion of SS – like a 401k it’s yours, and you can leave what’s left to your children when you die, which you can’t do with SS)

  20. FrankLucas Says:

If you know the people you are being interviewed by, the process goes a lot easier.

Pay attention to those with handicapped tags/mirror signs at how fast they park and run to the front door.

Add this to the fact you get $1k a month or more plus can work under the table even more easily since you already have a valid source of income. it’s like stealing candy from a baby.

  21. Bill Knapp Says:

Has West turned down his military pension. He talks out of both sides of his mouth at the same time.

  22. Irish Mike Says:

I’m not a fan of Mr. West’s provocative language (its the reverse of slavery – getting money for producing nothing), but dependence on government is a dangerous temptation. Why would someone put up with the stress and hassle of working for only a few dollars more than they might collect staying home (or going to the beach)?

More people went on Disability last month than got jobs. That is NOT a “step in the right direction”

  23. The_Riddler Says:

Ha, ha, ha, ha…. there may be a FEW cheats!?! WOW! That’s not what I’ve seen. Many cheat the SSI system. Two personal examples – group of individuals running a Miami Beach Cash Car Wash, all on SSI. They obviously can and do work but choose SSI and brag about their Uncle Sam paying for their apartment. Childhood friend, injured leg working and is now on SSI – $2,500 a month! He now can kayak dive in 4 to 6′ seas. Pretty capable, I would say! SSI may be a long drawn out process, but many more are applying. I am by no means a Tea party person, but Alan West has a point. He calls it slavery, but from my perspective I call it robbery! The system is broken and we are on a ship that is leaking from many holes in the system…

  24. Karen Smarkola Says:

Mr. West please think before you speak. I know President Obama didn’t create SSI (public school history class) nor does the president approve or disapprove citizens who go on SSI Disability. I suggest if you have a problem with SSI you, along with your constituents work together to improve SSI Disability approval process instead of political party infighting!

  25. Fairandbalanced Says:

Comment from Allen West: “Over the weekend I was on Fox & Friends discussing the growing number of Americans becoming dependent on government programs from food stamps to social security disability. Of course the liberal media is now putting words in mouth and saying I attacked Social Security. The fact is, I will work to protect Social Security and Medicare for our seniors and for future generations. It is too bad the media refuses to report on the failed economic policies of Washington liberals and the dependency culture career politicians are creating to expand their political power.”

  26. sign o the times Says:

If SSI is broke… print more money. The Fed does it for Wall St. I mean if it’s all a con… what does it matter. Money is only trust. When the trust doesn’t exist. It’s toilet paper

  27. HankS Says:

Congressman Allen West’s excellent point was that “More people went on disability last month than got jobs”
Congressman West works diligently to protect Social Security for our seniors. Rep. West speaks the truth — we’re standing with one foot over the financial abyss and Obama wants to spend, spend, spend

  28. Robert Cogan Says:

Admittedly, West has been in office only a short time. But has he sponsored or cosponsored any creative, problem solving legislation? If not, he’ll become known as the most loud – mouthed “House Negro” or “Uncle Tom” of the Republicans.

  29. FloridaGirl7 Says:

Congressman West just plain out tells the truth. Sorry if this offends some of you. We are over spending by billions of dollars every day. If we took all of the money that the rich people make, it would not make a dent in ou 17 Trillions dollar deficiet.
Congressman West has never said anything about citizens that draw SS retirement, or Medicare. In response this is what Congressman West had to say.”
Here are the comments by Rep. West: “Over the weekend I was on Fox & Friends discussing the growing number of Americans becoming dependent on government programs from food stamps to social security disability.

    Don’t drink the Kool-aid

  30. HAHAHA Says:

If you know of someone who is cheating the system, REPORT THEM. You know some the the biggest dregs of society. The hardworking, honest, people I know who HAD to apply for SSI benefits went through HELL trying to get them. They were DISABLED and couldn’t work. I highly doubt more people received SSI in Florida than got jobs. Cite the RELIABLE source and I’ll believe it. Floridagirl7-you obviously weren’t old enough to remember the BUSH era debacle of SPEND, SPEND, SPEND-get the U.S. into a war we shouldn’t have been in, spent ALL of the surplus left in the coffers from the Clinton years and ran the economy into a RECORD BREAKING DEFICIT. Times were good before Bush went into office. Our economy imploded (Banks failing/Stock Market crashes. Obama inherited a hornet’s nest. Granted, he hasn’t made all the right moves either; but the House Republicans have done everything in their power to make sure he CAN’T do anything to help the country move in a positive direction. Read some history before you make uninformed comments. Listen to the Republican candidates and ask yourself: What is their plan to turn the economy around? They don’t have one…just listen…The “Liberals” don’t have all the answers either and crooked politicians exist on BOTH sides of the aisle, but take your own advice: “Don’t drink the Kool-Aid”

  31. Disgusted Says:

Ofcourse, the democrat and the democrat biased Palm Beach Post would take a SNIPPET from a comment made by Congressman West and turn it into a negative.

SO TYPICAL! Democrats DOMINATE Palm Beach County. And Palm Beach County is KNOWN as CORRUPTION COUNTY!

The Palm Beach Post doesn’t EVEN have an article on the Palm Beach County $150 MILLION JAIL eXPANSION- overrun, costly mistakes, AND NOW ON HOLD, BUT the Sun Sentinel SURE DOES.
    http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/palm-beach/fl-jail-expansion-costs-20120708,0,2892903.story

Here we have the PB POST in WPB with NO REPORTING ON THE costly fiasco Jail Expansion occurring right down the ROAD from the Post’s offices.

and the Sun Sentinel based in South County/Broward reporting on the costly problems for the jail expansion.

NO TRUST IN THE PALM BEACH POST.

    IT IS A RAG!

  32. Stealers Says:

The politicians took the EXCESS social security money sent in by workers and used the money for other budget items instead of saving the money for horrid budget times like now.

Hmm, isn’t that how Bill Clinton balanced his budget…taking Social Security’s excess money from the that ‘savings’ account and spending it on other areas of expense, putting Social Security in crisis.

What’s not to think that the politicians won’t do the same with ObamaCrapCare?

    Get government of our lives.

West’s comments were taken out of context.

Seigel, Aaronson, Wasserman Schultz and the PB Post have never been known for accuracy nor fairness.

    Unbalanced reporting.

  33. Rick Says:

Jesus Christ, PBPost. He was talking about disability, not Social Security, and given this months news that more people got on disability than got jobs, it appear Allen West is correct. Even for your editorial standards – LIBERAL – this mischaracterization is beyond the pale.

I assume you all know the difference between “social security”, and “social security disability”

  34. Alan Says:

South Florida, you deserve this clown!

  35. FLDemNinja Says:

Allen West diminishes the plight of those who have gone through or are still to this day enduring slavery tactics by using such a distateful metaphor.

  36. Half Pint (Real One) Says:

    @FLDemNinja
Where the F*** do you get your info?! You come moseying in here with your spurs just a jangling and you want to sell me some sort of snake oil? Well guess what sister?! Homey don’t play dat! My balogna has not one, but 2 names Chief! I’ve got a hankering for a hunk of knowledge and you aint the one to fly me to the moon! You sir, need to take your nerf ball and fruit by the foot and GTFO! Wellington is the place to be to get some whitetrash strange.

    “I’m freshly shorn, naval_to_anus”

  37. Shoney Says:

West is correct. Obama has put the country into a situation where people have to FAKE a disability (SSI) in order to get a paycheck because there arent any jobs out there.

He’s not talking about social security. You people know that if you watched what he said.

  38. Mugsey Says:

He was referring to disability, not social security. I thought it was crystal clear. And I support what he says 110 percent.

  39. theoleyeller Says:

The never ending attacks against Alan West because he tells it like it is truthfully without politician speak. None of you weazils behind a keyboard attacking him and lying about him would have courage on the battlefield that West had. I’m not even a republican and I love the guy. My favorite elected official by far. I would vote him in as president if I could. Balls of steel and not a coward which is why these panty waist liberals hate him.

  40. ONE & DONE Says:

Allen West doesn’t just need to be defeated in November.

He needs to be HUMILIATED by at least 10%.

Then, and only then, will the Teabaggers sit up and take notice at how much they are loathed in America.

  41. seeithappening Says:

    @Mimi
Of course I can’t site reports, but I work with the kids/adults and witness is regularly! Parents getting the kids’ SSI checks and the kids don’t even know about it. Baby-momma is getting a check when baby-daddy has custody and baby daddy doesn’t know about the check! Young working adults who turn down jobs because the family won’t give up the free money..at the expense of the working kid!One family told the kid to quit his job or move out. His income was going to cause them to lose food stamps! Keep your head in the sand Mimi….this fraud is all over and the looney lefties want to portray all the recipients as poor, down trodden souls. Way too much fraud which hurts those who really need the assistance.

  42. kelly Says:

I think the point of West’s remarks was that somehow the President is creating dependency and slavery through his policies. West regularly makes these kinds of outrageous and dubious claims because he has no record of his own. The voters of Palm Beach county know this, and the voters of Martin county need to know this. West is an abrasive, angry, ego driven, know nothing, loud mouth. Vote him in and you will be embarrassed.

  43. SouthPB Says:

Slavery–a system of labor wherein human beings are bought and sold as commodities and forced AGAINST THEIR WILL to work FOR NO PAY, typically under threat of bodily harm.

SSDI is paid into via one’s own contributions to the FICA payroll tax. The benefit is a MONETARY CONTRIBUTION to the recipient. Recipients are not automatically entitled to benefits but instead must go through a time-consuming application and qualification process.

So let’s see. Slavery: People forced to work for no pay. SSDI: Government pays a monetary benefit, recipients cannot by definition work due to physical limitations.

How exactly is one the same as the other?

District 22, you have no idea how lucky you are to be free of this charlatan.

  44. Dee Says:

West changed some facts on his Wikipedia page not too long ago. Tried to re-write his military service history. He was dischagred from his “service to his country” for actions unbecomming to the military. Notice on his commercials he speaks of his father and his brother’s “service to America” but not his? Hmmm

  45. Dee Says:

Fox and Friends. SPARE ME!!!!!A dirtbag rag

  46. Thanks for yr service Says:

Allen West SERVICED in our military.

Did Murphy SERVE his country? Did he put his life on the line? Was he EVER responsible for the SAFETY of his troops?

Patrick Murphy is a carpetbagger who moved from Miami Dade County to Broward County to run for office. He WAS a Republican, then switched to Democrat and he is “EMPLOYED” and Funded by his father.

I’ll take the guy who served his country over Murphy who has done NOTHING for his country.

We must remember that S FL is dominated by democrats who will tinged every story and enhance a neophyte of their making into political office.

Don’t let the domination of one political party sway your vote.

Patrick Murphy has done nothing for our county, our state or our country. He’s led the ‘good life’.

Murphy is a richboy being financed by his daddy.

  47. SouthPB Says:

    Thanks for yr service–

I’ll take a person who has never served in the military any day of the week over someone who HAS served but disgraced his uniform and his country in the process.
