Mediscare: Biden to tell seniors GOP wants to ‘end Medicare as we know it’

by George Bennett | March 23rd, 2012

Biden

Vice President Joe Biden‘s visit to a senior community in Broward County will include accusations that congressional Republicans and their “amen corner” of Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich want to dismantle Medicare, cut Social Security and hold down taxes for the rich.

Biden will speak at the Wynmoor condo community in Coconut Creek around noon.

President Obama‘s reelection campaign has released some excerpts in advance of Biden’s remarks. Read ‘em after the jump…

From the Obama 2012 campaign:

EXCERPTS OF THE VICE PRESIDENT’S SPEECH

CHICAGO, IL – Today, Vice President Biden will deliver remarks at Wynmoor Village in Coconut Creek, FL on the President’s commitment to preserving and protecting our sacred compact with America’s seniors – that if you work hard and play by the rules, you can retire with dignity and security. The Vice President will highlight the Administration’s efforts to strengthen Medicare and other critical programs, drawing a contrast with Republican candidates who support the GOP budget proposal that would turn Medicare into a voucher program forcing seniors to pay thousands more a year for their health care in order to give massive tax cuts to millionaires and billionaires.

The event is the second in a series of remarks that the Vice President will deliver in the coming weeks about the economy and the middle class that will frame the issues that will be at the core of the general election and the choice America will make in November about the future we want for this country.

EXCERPTS OF THE SPEECH BELOW

There’s no question that the aging of the Baby Boomers puts new pressures on Medicare and Social Security. With the number of seniors doubling by 2040, the question is: are we going to strengthen and sustain these programs, now and for the future?

Or will we use these challenges as a pretense to do what many have been trying to do since the beginning: dismantle them?

The American people won’t be fooled. They know there’s a fundamental difference between us and the Republicans. We believe in strengthening Medicare. They don’t.

Make no mistake: If Republicans in Congress and their amen corner of Romney, Santorum, and Gingrich get their hands on the White House, they will end Medicare as we know it.

Mitt Romney also supports something the Republican leaders in Congress call “cut, cap, and balance.”

Of course, nobody knows what it means… and that’s exactly what they intend. Because like so many of the most damaging things, it looks and sounds innocuous.

So, let’s cut through it and say it in plain English.

The “cut” is cutting Social Security.

The “cap” is putting a cap on what we ask the wealthiest Americans to pay in taxes.

And the “balance” is balancing the budget on the backs of seniors and middle class Americans.

When these guys cut Social Security and voucherize Medicare, they’re not saving the next generation. They’re thrusting the burden on the next generation. They’re making it even harder for the middle class at a time when we know, if we want our economy to be strong, the middle class has to be strong.

  1. asc Says:

That’s funny, Medicare/Medicaid will be changed as much by secondary damage from Obamacare as’ Vice President Biden asserts the GOP to intentionally target it.

Reality: Obamacare is law, its acts are beginning to near their start dates and the costs are already double what was promised by “vote for it and we’ll see what’s in it” Pelosi et al.

Fiction: Joe Biden reading tea leaves or parrot droppings to know the future and the unpublished intent of others.

  2. Mike Barrett Says:

Medicare “as we know it” has indeed ended. Physicians and hospitals are all in a chase to fit into the new requirements of Obamacare/Affordable Care Act.

The only ones that seem to be in denial that Medicare “has ended as we know it” are the ones that voted for Obamacare/Affordable Care Act.

At least a dozen initiatives have been started that change the nature of the patient/physician/hospital relationship.

“Old” Medicare is rapidly fading away. “New” Medicare is advancing everyday – thanks to Obamacare/Affordable Care Act.

  3. Democrats EXEMPTED themselves Says:

Obama has already cut $500 billion from Medicare.

The DEATH PANEL has already started rationing care. They are now recommending that gynecological exam be given every THREE years instead of ONCE a year.

And more DEATH PANELS will be reducing the procedures, tests and exams they will pay for.

    Healthcare costs are escalating.

    Repeal OBamaCare.

The Democrats plowed thru this healthcare behind closed doors. They didn’t even know what was in ObamaCare.

BUT they KNEW to EXEMPT themselves from ObamaCare.

ObamaCare is NOT good. REPEAL IT!

  4. Miguel A. Contreras Says:

I am very sorry I voted for President Barack Obama. He lie to our Hispanic communities that he was going to do something good for an immigration reform. Instead, the number of alien deportees skyrocket. With all do respect, Obama will be a one term president.

  5. Tom Says:

Most responders to Biden’s speech have no idea what they are talking about. Perhaps they should ask the “real” Doctors who know what is about to happen. Don’t rely on the “quacks” that respond as talking points for the DNC.

    <<< Real Doctor

  6. Joe Budd Says:

Unbeleivable. You can’t make this stuff up. You have to be just plain stupid to believe what Biden is peddling! The fact is this administration with our local democrat delegation cut Medicare by more than $500,000,000,000 (yes 500 billion) to fund Obamacare. They took from seniors who paid for and deserve the benefits to give it away to those who have not.

  7. nookly Says:

If anyone trusts what this admin has to say it dumb enough to think there really are 57 states.
Ask your doctor about the impact of this law and let them give you their thoughts.
Reality is, people on medicare will start having to pay out of pocket because doctors are no longer going to except medicare as payment.
Obama wants healthcare in this nation to fail. he wants the government to have total control over everyday events of American lives.
We have already seen what a great job government can do to destroy something that works, only this time, there are no more taxpayers to pay for a bailout.

  8. Elsie E Connelly Says:

I cannot believe that anybody listens to Biden or Obama, I could see from the very first time, that Obama when he came into view that he was a assinine liberal who was set out to remake the USA into his Utopian Vision of a Socialistic State. Otherwise why would he release an obviously forged Birth Certificate and select a doddering old codger for a running mate.

  9. Phoebe C Says:

can someone please explain to me why and how the new immigrants who have never paid taxes and receive government assistance right after they land this country. On the other hand, we pay taxes and work hard till we retire, then find out our benefits have to be cut and reduced. This is the American dream only for those who take advantage of our generous assistance program, but not to those who work hard and go by the rules.

  10. bp Says:

Unbelievable. Biden lies just like his osama, the dear leader. History shows that it is the dems doing that now. Will we ever have truth in the dem party?

  11. Dale Says:

Good thing someone wrote this out for Biden, as he could not have come up with anything like this. I doubt he can tell shi- from applebutter. Obama was smart when he took Joe for a VP, because no one would want Joe as President.

  12. StarinIN Says:

It’s amazing how it is OK for most Medicaid recipients to not work or even want to and get better/more healthcare than those who worked and paid into Medicare all of their lives. Medicaid should have to take some big hits instead of Medicare. Wake up America!!! If the elderly/already retired can find jobs to pay for their meds and treatments that the gov’t. has denied them, these jackass sucker-uppers should atleast have to prove they are trying to work, especially those who have realized that if you stay home and just have babies you can suck off the government and the American taxpayers for life. How lame is that?!?!?! If I pay weekly into a fund, then when I go to draw from that fund to find all of the money gone…how is that not “just plain theft” They arrest anyone else guilty of stealing.

  13. Uncle_Chester Says:

Why won’t Republicans defend their plan to end Medicare? Everybody knows that’s what they’re after. Look, I could tell you that by cutting off your arms I’m going to make you stronger. After all, you’d have less weight to lug around right? It’s a hard argument to make that you’d be stronger. In the same way, it’s hard to make the argument that one wants to strengthen Medicare by gutting its funding, reducing benefits for seniors, and giving them coupons that won’t keep up with the cost of the services seniors need. You can call it Medicare or whatever you want, but to pretend the program is stronger after you’ve dismantled it is just a lie.

  14. marilyn yick Says:

But, the politians trying to kill medicare and “obamacare” get to keep their government provided healthcare. Right?

  15. JoseTheWrangler Says:

It appears that not a single one the commenters pay any attention to verified facts, instead of emotional rants and distortions from the Republican National Committee. It’s a plain brute fact that the Ryan plan will end Medicare. It will replace it with vouchers. It’s also a plain fact that the CBO calculates that it will double out-of-pocket for seniors. Be as angry as you want about Obama, but keep your eyes open about what the Republicans are trying to do. Guys, they SAID their goal is to return the US to pre-FDR, removing all social programs enacted since 1930, and that’s what they’re trying their best to do. Don’t let your anger overwhelm your judgment.

  16. Uncle_Chester Says:

wow, lots of misinformation in this thread.

Perhaps the biggest one is the myth that Obamacare “cuts” $500 billion from Medicare. First of all, they are projected savings, not cuts. Second, these cuts are wrung from health-care providers, not beneficiaries.

  17. StarinIN Says:

Oh by the way, affordable healthcare…what a joke. “Affordable” means you wouldn’t have to trade eating or heat for your meds each month. That’s not how it is

  18. Curly Says:

This is political pandering. No matter which party wins and who controls the congress or presidency Social Security will have to change. IT WILL NOT NOR CAN IT REMAIN THE SAME AS IT IS NOW.

  19. SenorPlaid Says:

What’s the problem? Biden’s only saying it because that’s exactly what the Republicans want to do.

  20. Rick Says:

The GOP wants to privatize everything. Imagine if your Medicare and Social Security money had gone into the stock market, would there be a dime left after the 2008 crash?

The government can’t bail out itself, and private industry certainly won’t bail the government out, though they feel that the government must help them when they get in trouble.

A voucher system will only help the wealthy because of the SS cap which should have been removed long ago.

  21. E AUSTIN Says:

how is it possible for our reps. to continue to get healthcare and pay for life? when we seniors are all struggle-ling to make ends meet? There definitely needs to be some changes made in our laws.

  22. Doug Says:

It’s simple math folks. We either change the so called ‘non-discretionary’ spending or the system will collapse under its own weight. The big three Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid are so vast at this point that we can not pay the interest on our national debt without increasing our debt limit every year. This is why the Democrats in the Senate wont pass a budget. They know that to do so means cuts in their precious programs. When the economic collapse comes, there will be no help from the government. Hope you all are prepared for that.

  23. ALLEN WEST MUST GO Says:

Story must have been linked by Drudge or Rush.

The American Republican Party is TOTALLY DISINTERESTED in facts.

All they do is lie. And it’s not “I disagree with you”, it is baseless lying. It is, in fact, PROVABLE lying.

    Why?

    Because Republicans HATE AMERICA.

They hate that Obama is helping America become an insured population.

They hate that Obama is cutting into the mega-corporations’ profit margin.

But most of all, they simply hate President Obama because he is black and they are vehemently racist.

WE THE PEOPLE have the chance to end this charade in November.

WE MUST VOTE OUT EVERY SINGLE REPUBLICAN.

AT THE STATE AND FEDERAL LEVEL.

    VOTE THEM OUT IN NOVEMBER.

THIS IS OUR CHANCE TO LIBERATE AMERICA FROM THE RIGHT WING RACISTS.

    VOTE.
    VOTE.
    VOTE.

November 6th, 2012 CANNOT COME SOON ENOUGH.

We MUST rid our local, state and federal government of the far right, once and for ALL TIME.

  24. Woody Says:

Of course republicans want to kill Medicare and burden the elderly with one more thing to worry about. By slashing Medicare, right wingers can shovel even more tax breaks and subsidies to the likes of Donald Trump and Big Oil. It’s simple math.

  25. George Says:

People who keep on booing Obama care have no idea what they are talking about! You are sadly stuck in the past like horses with blinders. Health care in this country IS and HAVE been broken for quite some time even thou ignorant extremist like Michelle Bachman was trying to brainwash us into believing we still had the best health care system in the world. We need to scrap our whole idea of health care and go that same way both Switzerland and Taiwan have gone. (THE BEST health care systems in the world!) One single insurer similar to Medicare. Oh I can already hear the screams of “socialism”. Wake up! You need a good balance between capitalism and socialism for a true healthy country.
THIS guy knows what he’s talking about: http://www.fareedzakaria.com/home/Articles/Entries/2012/3/19_Health_Insurance_Is_for_Everyone.html

  26. nemo Says:

    Biden is a dupe.

  27. JJ Cambell Says:

The Republicans, Biden claimed to a crowd at the Wynmoor Village condominium community, “balance the budget on the backs of seniors and middle-class Americans.
    Who are the real Cretins!!!
Q: Which Political Party took Social Security from the Independent “Trust Fund” and put it into the General fund so that Congress could spend it?
A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the democratically controlled House and Senate
Q: Which Political Party eliminated the income tax deduction for Social Security (FICA) withholding?
    A: The Democratic Party.
Q: Which Political Party started taxing Social Security annuities?
A: The Democratic Party, with Al Gore casting the “tie-breaking” deciding vote as President of the Senate, while he was Vice President of the US
Q: Which Political Party decided to start giving annuity payments to immigrants?
A: That’s right! Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Party. Immigrants moved into this country, and at age 65, began to receive Social Security payments! The Democratic Party gave these payments to them, even though they never paid a dime into
Then, after violating the original contract (FICA), the Democrats turn around and tell you that the Republicans want to take your Social Security away!
