Santorum on homosexuality: Government should only reward ‘healthy activity’

by Andrew Abramson | January 24th, 2012

Santorum in Stuart

STUART — Despite low poll numbers, Rick Santorum isn’t changing his focus, continuing to campaign as the hero of the far right.

At a campaign stop at Community Christian Academy in Stuart on Tuesday, a woman asked Santorum why her gay son doesn’t have the same rights as a heterosexual.

“Everybody in America should have the same rights, and I would agree with that,” Santorum said. “Everyone in America should have rights that are endowed to them by the Creator, those are unalienable rights. And your son, just like everyone else here, has those unalienable rights.”

But, Santorum said, “There are certain things that government does that gives people privileges in order to promote activity that are healthy for society and are best for society. And those things we promote would give people advantages or benefits, government benefits because we think that is healthy activity. Mothers and fathers coming together, forming healthy marriages, having children and raising those children. Every American child has the right, and the government should support the right to have and know their mother and father and be raised by their mother and father.”

At stops in Okeechobee, Stuart and Punta Gorda, Santorum continuously said that he’s the only consistent conservative in the race.

He even criticized his own family still living in Italy, saying, “all of my family, all of my grandmother’s relatives, they still live in Italy, they never came. When I go back and visit them they are nothing like my grandparents, my parents and my relatives here. They are very, very happy being ruled. They are very happy having a welfare state, a European Socialist state. It’s what they know.”

Santorum called President Obama, “King George III reincarnated,” saying Obama wants to tell Americans what they can and cannot do.

Santorum criticized what he perceived as Obama’s war on the wealthy, saying “Mr. President, you’re the president of 100 percent of America, not 99 percent of America.”

Santorum said America will become the British, relying on government health care. He warned that the Tea Party will be deflated if they nominate Mitt Romney or Newt Gingrich, saying they are not true conservatives.

Of Gingrich and Romney’s support of the 2008 government Wall Street bailout, Santorum said, “When everyone was panicking, they jumped in and panicked.”

Santorum blamed the media for focusing on Gingrich and Romney, saying he didn’t receive fair time in Monday’s debate. “I thought I was going to start selling popcorn at some point,” Santorum said in Okeechobee.

Many of the people who came out to hear Santorum speak said they prefer him to Romney and Gingrich but aren’t sure he can win.

Santorum disagreed, telling the Palm Beach Post, “Obviously a lot of people do” think I can win. “We won Iowa and this race is a long way from being over.”

Now the U.S. voter is recognizing the Republican party of “less government” is the party that has and wants to give us more government!

Who wants government in every womans life to stop her from making decisions about her own body? Republicans.
Who refuses to tax & legalize pot even though you can buy it in any town in American & have been able to for years? Republicans.
Who wants all gays kicked out of the military for what they do in their private life? Republicans.
Who refuses to tax & legalize prostitution even though you can pick up a yellow pages in every town & find escort services? Republicans.
Who refuses to let casinos bring high paying full benefit jobs to Florida? Republicans.
Who lectured us about our own personal “family values” while their leaders were committing adultery themselves? Republicans.
It seems Republicans are happy making bigger government to intrude into our personal lives.
Now they tell us they stand for “less government” – but the facts & reality in our lives tell a different story.
Bring on Willard or Newt the lech or belongs in a Santarium the nutjob or Paul the flake – ITS OBAMA IN A LANDSLIDE!

  2. wayne Says:

getting married is no more a privilege than taking a morning dump! Government belongs in neither my bedroom nor my bathroom and you, Mr Santorum, are what I flush on a daily basis!

  3. hear hear Says:

    Well said Wayne! 100% agreement.

  4. Clean Pipe Says:

No more penis in the anus boys!

  5. John60 Says:

Santorum is a joke, and his talking points are worn out.
He would rather focus on regulating private sexual conduct than addressing serious issues like the economy (and jobs). Oh yes, and to Wayne, marriage is a fundamental right. It is astonishing that there is still a debate about gay marriage.
Of course it should be legal.

  6. FLAMINGO PARK QUEEN Says:

Excuse me whilst I flush some Santorum…

  7. Mike Says:

Hey Santorium, go play with your dead baby you sick perverted looser. Admire the woman who stuck up for her son in what was likely a close minded, bigoted crowd who showed up to watch the sicko.

  8. FeFe Says:

Do you not know, Mr Abramson, the tour is called, Faith, Family and Freedom Tour? Also, do you not agree children have an advantage who know and are raised by their mother and father? That science is settled. If the family breaks down, government gets bigger as shown in neighborhoods where marriage is not the norm. Our subsidy and entitlement culture is unsustainable where Obama has added $5 trillion in debt in three years. Have the courage to come out and state you support same sex marriage instead of sneering.

True, Mr Santorum is the only consistent conservative; Ron Paul is a libertarian, and Newt/Romney supported TARP, individual mandate, and Tax & Cap. I too criticize the European socialist state because America is subsidizing it through our military and substantial contributions to NATO, UN, IMF, and a dozen other intergovernmental schemes. We are $15 trillion in debt, Mr Abramson, do you not find that burden to the next generation immoral? Furthermore, I welcome the clear contrast he acknowledges faith and family have brought America — those two integral parts to having limited government, lower taxes, and free societies — over statist rule. Don’t you?

Did Mr Santorum give an example of Obama’s King George III tendencies? You are most vague on the substance so are you saying there was none? Also, did Mr Santorum use those words, “Obama’s war on the wealthy” or are they yours? What was the weapon in this war? Could it be Obama’s call for increased taxes in a time of recession when 47% already pay no income tax at all? Whose share is fair, again?

  9. Bob Says:

The Lady doth protest too much! That prettymuch describes this fothy guy! Santorum seems obsessed with gays, and gay sex. All I can say is “Latent, latent, and more latenet!!!! His relatives in Italy are probably happy to stay there—-an ocean away from this Christian wingnut!!!

  10. phil Says:

Why doesn’t Mr. Piety speak up about all the children who have been abused and permanently scarred by clergymen of the religion he follows so rigidly.

  11. GHUA Says:

GOP! The party of Values. Can’t walk the talk! The country hasn’t been hijacked, isn’t lost and nothing today is all the Presidents fault. Been brewing for decades. Listening to GOP debates highlights all the problems facing Americans today and they’ve only been talking about each other. Integrity and honesty are dying for lack of recognition.

  12. Stuart Dolphin Says:

Scary to think that most of the people who have commented on this article will be voting for our next president! No wonder our country is in the shape we’re in. Everyone is entitled to their opinion of who is the best person for the job and before your vote is cast, ask yourself if this is the right candidate to lead our country and who will make the decisions for the better of the USA.

  13. Downtown Danny Says:

We should vote for a president just because he tells us to get married? Get real. This ain’t Mayberry and it ain’t 1956.

  14. jackson brown Says:

@FeFe: “Also, do you not agree children have an advantage who know and are raised by their mother and father?”…
Really?, even when either of the parents are abusive or otherwise unfit to parent?

  15. Hypocrite Says:

So if Santorum is going to outlaw gay marriages because they are ‘unhealthy’ for children?

Well then he had better outlaw divorce for couples with children as well, since that has been proven to be unhealthy for children.

And he is accusing Obama of wanting to “tell Americans what they can and cannot do”!

  16. O'Really Says:

The only “healthy” way to save the American Family is to outlaw divorce. Stop worrying about what people are doing Rick!

  17. corporations are not people Says:

These Republican candidates are a complete joke! The fact that some people are stupid enough to believe their nonsense is sad…

  18. OSCAR Says:

Just because Obama is a closet homosexual Muslim ..there is no reason for RS to overgeneralize.

  19. Tom in California Says:

America is the laughingstock of the world because people like Santorum, Bachmann, Perry, etc. are regarded as serious political figures by yokels here.

  20. OSCAR Says:

They are laughing in Muslim nations because they hang homosexuals instead of talking about them..and in Iran, homosexuality does not exist according to their president.

  21. jojo the fly on the wall Says:

Santorum is retro sociopathic Taliban. His own state rejected him because of what he is – an idiot and two-faced ego driven freak who got to Washington where his head grew ten sizes too big and his heart about 20 sizes too small. Think he’ll save American Families or the country? He can’t even save himself.

  22. Jeff Says:

Funny how whenever Christian conservatives claim that same-sex marriage is “unhealthy for society”, then can never explain exactly *how* it’s unhealthy.

    Liars, all of them. SHAME.

  23. B W Says:

When will this nutbag crawl back into his hole in Pa. They ran his butt off from the Senate and he hasn’t gotten the hint.
    Go home wack job.

  24. GOPNYC Says:

Its stunning how threatened and hateful so many writing here are. Same-sex “marriage” is an absurd notion that has only been around for 20 years, but as Agenda Item #1 for the Radical “Gay” Left. Enough already. Go back to your closets.

  25. OSCAR Says:

Perverts are in control of our government..our schools…and our media…Ozzie and Harriet family lifestyle is mocked and feeble idiots buy into that..

  26. Chet Says:

Mitt Romney and the homosexual agenda.

  27. RCharles Says:

This thread shows clear opposition to Santorum, which is encouraging – even the extreme right wing can see through his BS and are unwilling to put him in charge of anything.

One correction: Santorum was fired by the good folks of PA, in part because he lived in VA while being Senator from PA. (yes, there were much bigger reasons, all good.) So please don’t encourage him to come back to PA; we don’t want him.

    Cheers!

  28. Robert Says:

Santorum has no business running for President. His candidacy is an embarrassment.
He is against birth control, all abortion, and gay marriage. Who does he thinks is going to pay for or raise all these children he thinks people ought to be having? Who does he think pays when poor people have children they can’t take care of? Does God pay for that? No. The taxpayers pay for every single one. Well, the ones that live, that is.
And isn’t he supposed to be against the healthcare Act because it is expensive and intrusive? What’s more intrusive, the Healthcare Act or a system of laws to govern who people marry, who they have sex with, and what (if any) birth control they are allowed to use.
We need MORE birth control, not less.
Does Santorum think we have too few people and too many jobs?

  29. Cecil Shorts Says:

    Hey Rick,
If I asked you to sign a contract and by doing so it would guarantee you that you would be ostracized by society, have friends and family turn in you, have less rights than everyone else and be portrayed poorly in the media, would you choose to sign it? In 90% of the cases Gay is not a choice.
PS. Forcing a woman to carry a baby from a rape is a classic male right wing mentality. If you could carry a kid you would want everything that reminded of that incident washed away. You sure as hell wouldn’t raise a rapist’s kid and good luck finding a home for a kid carrying a rapist’s DNA.
You live in a imaginary universe free from reality and free to manipulate the 10,000 words in the bible to say whatever you want.

  30. c anderson Says:

Hey RS is a great argument against home
    schooling.

  31. OSCAR Says:

For some reason perverts feel threatened by RS…that can’t hurt him.

  32. Tim Gard Says:

Wow, the only people *for* RS in these comments have called homosexuals ‘perverts’ or conflate their own homophobia with “family and faith”, as if these cannot exist outside of heterosexuality.

Quite frankly, I think Santorum is running only to kill the Google bomb of his name.

  33. Danram Says:

There you have, in a nutshell, why Rick Santorum will never be president.

I am a registerd republican and I would never, in a million years, vote for someone with this kind of mentality.

I find it very amusing that people like Santorum just love to wrap themselves in the flag and gush on and on about “freedom” until you start talking about an activity they happen to find disagreeable.

  34. OSCAR Says:

The liberal media’s glorification of homosexuality is not accepted ny a majority of Americans. Gay marriage can’t even pass in liberal California or any other state when te people get to vote. Hell..even Obama does not support gay marriage because he knows that if he loses the working class Catholic vote which includes the majority of Hispanics..he is done.

  35. Tommy Freedom Says:

Marriage is a Church/Temple sacrament. Get Government out of the Church/Temple. Marriage to Sexually Active Deviants is not acceptable to mainstream religions.

  36. Christian Says:

If this country’s main priority was same sex marriage when it was founded we wouldnt have a country. Its wrong, abortion is wrong and so is adultry

  37. Bill Says:

Once two fags can get together and make a baby, I may give a crap about their polluted behavior

  38. Common Sense Says:

Idiots, Homosexuality is not wrong because of religion, its wrong because its un-natural and goes against our biology and procreation. Its about as correct as shoving food up your ass and expecting nurishment. Common Sense morons, common sense. This is not a wonderland we live in. Its called the universe and there is a natural order to things. Look at 99% of all the species that have ever lived on this planet. Only man can screw up and pervert something as simple and common as sexuality. The perversion won’t stop there and never does. Next the pedofiles will be fighting for their right to love children. Why not, its only one person loving another. Whats wrong with that? Because its un-natural morons. As un-natural as a man having sex with another man or womain having sex with another woman. Common Sense is the Elephant in the room that most of you want to ignore. But you cant escape it. Homosexuality will always be un-natural and biologically incorrect. Doesn’t matter if the entire world excepts it. It will always be wrong.

  39. Seashell Says:

I admire Rick for having the courage to speak out about his convictions? Do I think that he is always right? No. But you always know where he stands.

  40. Jon Says:

Hey Ricky..I for one DO NOT NEED ANY REWARD FROM YOU OR ANY ‘GOVERNMENT’…you’re a joke!

  41. RCharles Says:

Common Sense Says: “Idiots, Homosexuality is not wrong because of religion, its wrong because its un-natural and goes against our biology and procreation.”

How can something that spontaneously occurs in nature, and has for thousands of years, be “un-natural”? The vast majority of gays were born to be gay; they are wired differently by nature.

I saw a presentation once, by a 35 year-old gay man, who described his teenage years and discovering he was gay. He tried to change and bought a copy of playboy to stare at the pictures; for him it was like staring at rocks, absolutely no effect.

For most gays it is not a choice, it is a natural part of them.
