Obama at 54% Florida disapproval, in virtual tie with Romney or Santorum; Nelson-Mack Senate race close

by George Bennett | January 11th, 2012

Obama, Nelson reelection bids too close to call in Florida

Perennial swing state Florida is too close to call in a hypothetical general election match-up between President Obama and either Republican Mitt Romney or Rick Santorum, a new Quinnipiac University poll says.

A Senate race between Democratic incumbent Sen. Bill Nelson and Republican U.s. Rep. Connie Mack would also be a virtual tie, the new poll says.

The poll shows Obama, who carried Florida with 51 percent in 2008, continues to have underlying job-approval and favorability problems in the Sunshine State. Fifty-four percent of Florida voters disapprove of the job he’s doing, 52 percent say he doesn’t deserve to be reelected and 50 percent say they have an unfavorable opinion of him.

The Jan. 4-8 poll of 1,412 registered Florida voters found 46 percent supporting Romney and 43 percent backing Obama — a virtual tie considering the poll’s 2.6 percent margin of error. Obama edged Santorum by a 45-to-43 percent margin in the poll, also a virtual tie.

In Florida’s crowded Republican Senate primary, Mack has a huge lead over the rest of the field with 39 percent and all the other candidates at 6 percent or less. But 42 percent of Republicans remain undecided in the race.

If Mack faces Nelson in November, the poll shows the two-term Democratic incumbent getting 41 percent to Mack’s 40 percent.

Mack is viewed favorably by 32 percent of voters and unfavorably by 13 percent, with 54 percent saying they don’t know enough about him to have an opinion. Nelson has a 41/23 favorable/unfavorable score.

Among presidential candidates, only Romney and Santorum have positive favorability scores with Florida voters. Romney’s is 47 percent favorable and 29 percent unfavorable. Santorum’s favorable/unfavorable percentages are 31/25. Obama’s percentages are 45/50. Also in negative territory are Ron Paul (26/41) and Newt Gingrich (31/47).

Romney is no where near winning; especially against Obama who will prevail again.

  2. nemo Says:

Obama is the worst president we ever had. Let me put it this way Obama is Jimmy Carter and George W Bush on steroids.

Even a monkey or even a prostitute can defeat Obama in 2012

  3. Richard Says:

This president did inherit an economy and a country near a depression and yes it has taken entirely too long to even reach the meager recovery we have to this point, but he has done it without the GOP’s help and if he hadn’t used up his time passing a health care plan when the dem’s had control of both houses and concentrate of jobs our economy would be much better, but with that being said there is no way Obama will get reelected and when the GOP takes control of all parts of our government you can all say good bye to entitlements and prepare for our next war with Iran because Willard Romney will invade that country next, it’s what republicans do best.

  4. Q Poll Says:

I thought this poll was suspect and so I looked at the sampling for the poll and it is WAY off.

    http://www.quinnipiac.edu/images/polling/fl/fl01102012_demos.doc

They sampled 3% more Republicans than Democrats even though Dems have over 500,000 voter advantage in registration. So the poll is skewed right.

Even worse, however, African-Americans and Hispanics are both under-represented in the poll.

If Quinnipiac polled Floridians in proportion to the actual residents of the state, Obama would have been clearly ahead.

Granted, the Obama team has a lot of work to do to keep Florida in the Dem column, but he is NOT “losing” Florida right now by any stretch of the imagination.

Btw, this also explains the close race between Nelson and Mack.

Romney doesn’t excite the GOP base. And he doesn’t excite the Tea Party. Mack is an establishment Republican, also, and not a Tea Partier… This is at a time when the GOP is comprised largely of Tea Party conservatives who hate the GOP establishment.

All-in-all, the pro-Romney/pro-GOP spin this poll has generated doesn’t match reality on the ground.

  5. T 4 2, 2 4 T Says:

The real story and or poll question that should be asked is how many Republicans will stay home on election day since Romney is left of Center?
For all the belly-aching about Obama, the Republicans have abandoned the principles they have been whining about for the last two years in favor of a candidate who will take any position to get elected, and does not embody their high falootin ideals.
Republicans don’t run candidates they believe in, they often instead strategically run candidates in opposition to the opposing party, disheartening their base.

  8. Joe bigboy Says:

Mack is a creep. This guy sent me mailers about his great “Family Values” during his election campaign. He then went to DC, had affairs all over town, moved in with Sonny Bono’s widow, left his wife & 2 kids, and married her. He then spent all his off time with her in Palm Springs California while his ex wife & kids went on food stamps in Ft. Lauderdale where they moved into a 1 bedroom rental. Finally after the press outed him for it he started making support payments to her.
This follows a life of Mack in which he got in numerous bar fights, usually losing as Ron Gant broke hi arm and blacked his eye during a fight in Atlanta, and got 2 DUI’s.
Mack should not be in any elected office, much less the senate. His views are nothing more than a juvenile reciting of Republican talking points – he is a dumb as a rock.
To match him against a man of Bill Nelson’s personal accomplishments in life without having a famous daddy & grandpa to pay his way everywhere and clean up his messes is a joke.

  9. Donna Says:

Obama is finished, hope and change never came and has already gone.

Now all the OLD people are Voting for the Walstreet crook plastic man and Job Outsourcer Romney.

While all the young people are voting for Ron Paul for REAL Hope and Change.
The OLD people just watch Fox Lies, CNN and MSNBC and believe everything they are told. The Young and smart look up the REAL news on the Internet.

If Romney wins, we get a Multi Decade Hyper Inflationary Depression.

If Ron Paul wins, we get a sound currenncy, aBalanced Budget, END THE FED Reserve, Close the IRS, Bring the Troops Home and end all these Wars.

    Need I say more FLORIDA.
Look up Ron Paul’s Voting Record, then look up Romneys.
Then your descision will be CLEAR

    Ron Paul 2012
    Restore America
    End the FED

This is the kind of positive impromptu motivational speech we have all been waiting for:

    http://www.mediaite.com/tv/rep-ron-paul-defiantly-confirms-to-the-media-after-placing-in-nh-we-are-dangerous/

It’s good to see the rapidly growing deep swell of educated and motivated young people all over the country who are on the Ron Paul bandwagon as they study the current scene.

They finally seem to have realized how their negligent parents/older relatives have dropped the ball and been conned and swindled for the last several decades, leaving them with a seriously damaged country and financial trash pile of senseless debt as an inheritance.

They finally understand and appreciate the scholarship, honesty and reality that Dr. Ron Paul and the Libertarians have been blowing as an alarm horn — mostly into the wind until now.

  11. Dmann Says:

If I was a Dem, I go with Hillary . Kucinich, Jesse Jackson jr. Repubs Marco Rubio and Allen West. That is the dream team of politics. Indies Ron Paul. Play Rocky music!

  12. Oh Jesus! Says:

We should not allow Iran to develop nukes. All current nuclear countries should reduce and then eliminate their arsenals (including the United States). Any country ruled by religious fanatics is double trouble when it comes to WMDs like nukes (including the United States), since logic takes a back seat to whatever they think their imaginary god wants them to do. This is true for all religions. No nukes!

  13. Too Long in Office Says:

Democrat Senator Bill Nelson has been in political office for OVER 40 YEARS!

Just WHAT has he done in those 40 YEARS for Florida ?!?!?

Democrats should have run another candidate! Tired of the same old 40 year political candidates.

Everytime someone tries to run democrats shut them down!

  14. PBC 111 Says:

Best options for President in 2012 in order are: Obama, Huntsman, Paul, Romney. The rest of the republican field is a bad joke. Santorum = religulous, racist nut who would go to the pope for advice. Newt = hateful, abrasive, ultra-right cheater/liar. Perry = dumber version of George W. Bush (all hat and no cattle) who is even more religulous and cocky for no apparent reason.

  15. Dmann Says:

Obama sux PBC 111. I can’t create wealth faster than he destroys it. It’s getting beyond Dems Vs Repubs. We really have to take care of each other as a Nation. Politicians generally are wealthy, their kids don’t go to school with the commoners. We have become a caste system and all of these politicians and their minions in the Government system aren’t worth the bang for the buck. The entire Government workforce is probably best at around 6-8%.

  16. Dmann Says:

Our children suffer here. We are not a top notch…. I also can’t continue to put my self In Harms Way to defend people that hate me. I have put my life on the line , for everything that you believe in, FREEDOM to be whatever you want to be. A lot of us are waiting for you to catch up. The solution isn’t Obama or Rodny… Weak for a powerful , free people. Don’t settle, left or right. Together we are great, not seperate.

  17. More involvement Says:

Obama has involved the USA in more conflicts in the Middle East and Africa: the Arab Spring, Summer, Fall and now Winter is too much!

Syria, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Somolia, Uganda, etc, etc, etc! Plus Obama has now entered us further into the asian seas and we’re establishing a base in AUStRALIA!

Bring our troops HOME, protect OUR borders and let those countries we are fighting for place their citizens and soliders fighting BESIDE our soldiers.

Tired of American youth dying in the Middle East for a State that doesn’t even use its soldiers to fight right BESIDE our soldiers!

  18. Dmann Says:

Do something nice to the person next to you. That works a lot better. Killing people is not fun, or glorious, it sucks.

  19. Bill Neubauer Says:

The Post analysis is thorough. But, as often happens, “there is another dimension.” If the presidential race is close in the polls, if the Republican can persuade Marco Rubio to share the ticket with him, Obama is toast.
Note that the “analysts” (the “gotcha guys”) have been trying to pin down Rubio forever, and, typically, Rubio has fluffed them off–WITHOUT REALLY GIVING THEM A FIRM “NO.”
I’m betting on a Romney-Rubio victory, even though I shall vote for Paul if he runs as a third-party candidate.

  20. ELC Says:

For those in this state who still love their O Bama boy keep drinking the Kool-Aide because come Nov’12-your boy is out the door. A perfect example of our nervous the Dems are down here…everytime Debbie Wasserman Shultz goes before a camera her eyes are twitching like those of a rabbit and she can’t seem to get her message out. May be its because her Messiah isn’t up to the job and she is going down with the Obama Titanic.

  21. Ruby Says:

A virtual tie between Obama and Romney or Santorium-that only says that the man
isn’t able to convince his audience that he’s worth re-electing. One can only hope that those who thought he was perfection the 1st time around have woken from their deep slumber and realize he didn’t realize all his empty
promises and they are coming back to haunt him. One can also hope the 2nd time around-they either vote Republican or sit the next one out. Obama has woken the sleeping bear and he wasn’t happy with Obama’s poor performance as President. The bear is looking for others to take over the job.

  22. Dmann Says:

Hey Debbie it’s not that way. The difference is I learn and earn there every word, and you lie to them. I talk straight and you lie.

  23. Dmann Says:

Obama is good for basically nothing, he dosn’t work the debt off. Our school systems suck. The best teachers should get freedom of choice. who do I fight not having a father , whose the liberl?

  25. PBC 111 Says:

If Romney wins the nomination and selects Rubio as a running mate it would be almost as bad as when old man McCain picked Sarah Palin…maybe worse…Rubio is a fool…his IQ is probably equal or below Sarah Palin…he would go down in history as Romney’s hispanic male version of Sarah Palin…hope Romney does his vetting and uncovers Rubio’s lack of intelligence before picking his mate…if you are going to pick a token it should be a smart one…

  26. FL Native Says:

Marco Rubio’s claim to fame is being anti-gay…I read somewhere that Rubio is actually bi-sexual…I guess that is somehow different? He also wants to take away benefits from seniors…that does not sound fair…I like Romney but will not vote for a ticket that includes Rubio…we Floridians know him too well…even the Cubans do not like him and most consider him an idiot…

  27. RENEGADE Says:

@More involvement aka same ole same ole, aka Ralph, aka,big dem.

Gee there Obi your post sounds awfully anti-semitic for a guy who claims to support the TParty. Isn’t that a cardinal sin in the T.P. pseudo-reality.

  28. Truth Says:

    @Ruby

Obama has accomplished more in 3 years than many presidents have in 8. His is a historical Presidency that others will be compared against for generations. The economy and his numbers are improving daily. He has the election lock up.
Put your teddy bear back to sleep he can’t help.
You think its bad now just wait until he actually starts to campaign and turns loose the millions of supporters who have seen what has taken place and can no longer be fooled by the GOP.

  29. Good Laugh Says:

The PB Post should remove biased polls such as these. This is not real reporting but the thoughts of the reporters views and opinion rather than factual information.

The only people who read and believe this bogus journalism are the uneducated folks that can’t comprehend the big picture and lack the ability to make their own analysis.

Obama has done more good in the past 3 years than most Presidents have their full term(s). He walked into a mess from the previous Administration and is slowly cleaning everything up.

Who caught Osama? Let’s not forget that… who is going to fight to retain your medical insurance and Social Security. Before you draw a conclusion… really think about this. How much do you have saved for retirement and how much have you already paid into the system? What happens if you suddenly get ill and you can pay for the medical expenses out of pocket?

The republicans support of the 1% aren’t looking out for your best interest… they’re looking out for their buddies (BIG CORPORATIONS).

Their buddies can save much money for themselves by eliminating your job and sending this overseas for slave labor. Don’t be fooled people… especially the 99% of the population whom jump on a band wagon without realizing the truth.
