Poll: Rubio as VP swings Florida to GOP — unless Obama dumps Biden for Hillary

by George Bennett | November 1st, 2011

Whoever wins the 2012 Republican presidential nomination can carry Florida if he adds Sen. Marco Rubio as his running mate, according to a new poll by Suffolk University in Massachusetts.

The poll of 800 Florida voters has a 3.5 percent margin for error and was conducted Oct. 26-30 — after news stories detailed that Rubio’s Cuban-born parents came to the U.S. before Fidel Castro‘s 1959 takeover rather than afterward, as Rubio’s official Senate biography stated.

In a Rubio-free scenario, the poll found Mitt Romney as the strongest GOP nominee against President Obama in Florida. Obama and Romney tied at 42 percent in a hypothetical matchup. Obama beat Herman Cain by a 42-to-39 percent margin and Rick Perry by a 46-to-34 percent margin.

When respondents were asked to choose between an Obama-Joe Biden ticket and a nameless Republican nominee with Rubio as running mate, the GOP tandem won by a 46-to-41 percent margin.

But an Obama-Hillary Clinton ticket would beat a nameless Republican-Rubio ticket by a 46-to-43 percent margin in Florida, the poll says. And Obama and Clinton would win 50-to-41 against a hypothetical GOP ticket without Rubio.

Says Suffolk’s David Paleologos: “In Florida, Marco Rubio is Superman, but Hillary Clinton is the Kryptonite.”

The poll found the GOP presidential primary race virtually tied, with Romney leading Cain by a 25-to-24 percent margin

  1. mike Says:

The gotp sees marco as a liability, with good reason. Rubio was born to an immigrant father which makes him a non-natural born citizen. (anchor baby)

  2. npgator Says:

@mike – If you believe that you are an idiot! Obama would never take Hillary as VP as she is too strong for him and he doesn’t need another woman wearing the pants in the family.

  3. Bill Neubauer Says:

There is a reason for the pollsters to make Rubio a centerpiece for their poll of vice president prospects. It may be remembered that five of the GOP presidential candidates opted out of the Univision “debate.” At the time ALL FIVE of those candidates said that, if nominated, they would select Rubio as their running mate.
One reason is the Tea Party link that boosted Rubio to victory over incumbent governor Charlie Crist and the oratorical superiority of Rubio over Obama WITHOUT A TELEPROMPTER. Rubio will beat Obama on the campaign trail, not only in Florida but in many other states just because of his eloquence.

  4. wait a minute Says:

So if Jack Black wins the Republican nomination and picks Rubio, he automatically carries Florida? First you need a presidential candidate… Cain? Toast. Romney? After yesterday’s news, Toast? Perry? Drunk, like W.

  5. REal American Says:

This is all BS. Rubio has a very high disapproval rating in FL and he is part of the 9% approval rating in Washington.

  6. lol donkey Says:

The Rubio who was exposed recently for lying about the fact that his parents were Cuban political refugees, when they in fact moved to South Florida years ahead of Castro’s revolution? Slight credibility problem.

  7. Bring them home Says:

Hillary Clinton has gotten to the place she is on the coattails of her husband.

As for Secretary of State. She has involved us in LIbya, Yemen, Somolia, Egypt, Pakistan and the troops leaving Iraq will now be place in the Persian Gulf.

Bring our soldiers home. Remember when Bush was President there was a woman who protested all the time, Cindy somebody, and the press would give her media coverage ALL THE TIME.

Now, that Obama is president, the press ignores her even though soldiers continue to die and Obama places more of our soldiers in the Middle EAst.

Bring our soldiers home to protect our shores and borders.

  8. Tea Lady Says:

    Oh My,

Are we still discussing this? Mr Cain is the only viable candidate for the Presidency. Mr Rubio will help with the Spanish votes. Mr Romney has a terrible record of $pending and Mrs Clinton is not Vice Presidential material.

  9. mike's green card Says:

    @mike
If what you say about Rubio is true,
then YOU were born to an immigrant great-great-great grandfather which also makes YOU a non-natural born citizen (anchor great-great-great grandbaby).
So when ya think about it, there’s no difference between you and Rubio.
    Is there?

  10. Brian O'Donaghey Says:

Rubio’s clearly demonstrated that he’s NOT all qualified to be VP….a mere heartbeat away from being President.
He’s paid no attention to detail towards, and shown no understanding of National Security Intelligence as a member of the Senate Intel Committee, thereby continually putting US military lives at risk.
How can he ever comprehend sensitive, complex Intel matters if he doesn’t even accutately know his own family simple history,….like WHEN they departed Cuba, and HOW LONG they intended to stay in the US when they got here ??
Or his his Integrity and Honesty compromised.
    Either way…..F minus…..NOT QUALIFIED.

  11. Gordon Gorman Says:

This sounds like another Agnew. Rubio can not get his story straight about his family. He will be a great addition to the Republican. Sticktheir heads up their butts and forget about everything.

  12. Downtown Danny Says:

“Suffolk University” ??? – Never heard of it. 800 people? Anyone who has known Rubio knows he has told lies since day 1. He is a complete phony. He is known as a “jewban” among people who have had interaction with him – a cheapskate condescending jerk who is as dumb as a rock. The fact that he is a senator is an embarrassment to our state that we must correct in the next election – once the Republican morons stop voting for anyone who claims to be the “most conservative” – as if that is a valuable asset rather than a character flaw.

  13. mike Says:

@greencard – Judging by your logic and reasoning powers I can see how some adversly affected people still support the current gotp. My parents were legal US citizens when I was born thereby making me a natual born citizen. Marco Rubios parents were not US citizens when Marco was born so he is not a natural born citizen. AKA “anchor baby” (gotp term, not mine)

  14. Rusty Says:

rick, the crook, scott is the bigest problem for the republicans. He’s just a quick blip on the radar and is going to cost the republicans dearly.
Much more of an issue than Biden.

  15. Rick S. Says:

    Rick Scott for VP!

  16. Tea Lady Says:

    Oh Yes!

    Rick Scott for V.P.!

    Cornolio!

  17. dan Says:

Doesn’t matter Obama the clueless buffon will lose.Romney will be President, the only one with any sense. It sure will not be the clown from the getto who has no clue on anything whats going on,just smoke and no fire. But what do you expect?South Fl is full of sheep that will follow this goof full of hot air since they are gullible people.

  18. reality check Says:

Rubio is the worst possible candidate for anything. I hate the way he refers the SS benefits I have worked my whole life for as an “entitlement”. But he gets his Senatorial salary for life, even after he’s booted out of office. What about that ENTITLEMENT, dirtbag. If he has his way we will all be dead before we can even retire. If he had his way we would all be over 100 before we can collect. In other words he wants to abolish it completely but in stages. And we will never get our money back.

  19. Georgie is the worst Says:

In no way is Marco Rubio qualified to be Vice President and just a heartbeat away form being the President. He has accomplished very little.

  20. sue Says:

Hey Tea Moron…Cain is the only viable candidate…hey stupid…by the time this sexual harrassment case is done…he will be also….he seems to have a problem getting his stories straight like Rubio. Losers all…just like you.
