Perry to GOP straw poll voters: ‘I’ve got all my hopes on Florida’

by George Bennett | September 24th, 2011

Rick Perry greets supporters at a breakfast for Republican straw poll voters this morning.

ORLANDO — Today’s Republican Party of Florida presidential straw poll is shaping up as major test for Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who came here Thursday as his party’s frontrunner but stirred doubts among many Republicans after a stumbling performance in a nationally televised debate Thursday night.

Mitt Romney and other candidates have left town before today’s “Presidency 5″ straw poll, but Perry stuck around this morning to speak to about 1,000 Republican delegates at a breakfast gathering.

He recalled being lieutenant governor of Texas in 2000 while the world waited for the Florida recount to determine whether then Texas Gov. George W. Bush would become president.

“For about a month and a half, my hopes of being the governor of the state of Texas were hanging in the balance. And here we are 11 years later and I’ve got all my hopes on Florida again,” Perry said.

“There are a number of folks whose campaigns have spurned this tradition of the Florida straw poll, and I think that’s a big mistake. I think the Florida straw poll is very important,” Perry said.

Build a wall from the Louisiana/ T%exas border to the Pacific ocean in California when we can even get permits through to drill for oilo in our own off shore fields as well as on land? By the time that wall would be built my youngest grandchild (born 2 months ago) will be retired. Texas is pay for the border security and the tuition with STE money voted on by state legislators while the feds duck the issue of border security. Tenth Ammendment – States Rights. Besides this Texas does have a very special relationship with their Hispanic population going back to the Alamo and before. Keeping NARCO and Islamic Terrorists and other typesd of crimanls out is my concern, not Juan and his family looking to pick oranges or cut grass or what ever to feed his family.

Hey AJ You do not need to be an apologist for Rico, I was refering to his approval of allowing instate tuition in Texas to illegal ailens but not to other US citizens in other states. Your mammy raised a fool

    Some spelling corrections – sorry!

Added – since we are not having enough children to support Soicial Security in the future we better have some immigration – legal type and NOT criminal types but children already here and in many cases born on U.S. soil making them defacto citizens by most interpretations of the Constitution, getting in state tution at a cost to that state is not really a big deal.

Years ago I knew Hispanic U.S.
Marines that were NOT citizens but fought for this country. One I knew was a Senior NCO BEFORE he got citizenship!

Gov. Perry is so full into himself, what a cockroach. Folks like this or not, there is not a GOP candidate that can possibly beat the O. Further more if there was the O would step down for Hillary, then what are you going to do Tea Baggers sorry GOP is not long for 2012.

  10. luckydog Says:

    Simper Fi Dan.
I think giving an illegal alien $100,000 in free tuition IS a big deal. The USA is the ONLY countru in the world that still allows chain migration. I Know how many Hispanics are good military people and I appreciate them. However when a person makes the decision to enter our country illegally, they are breaking the law and I want them out of here!
Say we give Texas, Arizona, New mexico and California back to Mexico. Would the current citizens be better off? How about in 10, 20, 30 years? NO. they would be in the same condition as residents of other Mexican states. Poor and trying to get into the other US states. The only way to maintain our quality of life in the USA is through LEGAL immigration.

Well, I am not a Republican or Democrat. I am an Independent and have been for a long time. Governor Perry’s grades at Texas A&M have been posted. I just ask you to tell me where I can find the grades for, as you call him, the “O”?

First of all, Once a Marine, Always a Marine. Semper Fi!

Please read the Constitution – born on U.S. Soil they are citizens. There is a path to appropriately ammend the Constitution.

Free or in state education funding voted on and funded by the legislature of Texas is a States Rights issue. Covered by the Tenth Ammendment to the Constitution. It is federal law that says even ILLEGALS have to be educated. Change the federal law and get the feds to secure the border. Presently a lot of the border security is funded by the states while the feds fund boon doggles like studying shrimp on tread mills and companies that are so call “green” that make $500M + in federal tax money dissappear.

I am not in favor of ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION, in particular what the feds allow which is NARCO, ISLAMIC and other criminal and terrorist organzations to ATTACK, yes – I said attack our borders. We need to secure our borders from this attack that is gloing on BEFORE we can worry about Juan and his wife and kids being exploited by criminal elements like the NARCOS and the Coyotes that leave innocent people to die in the desert. The way the feds have been workijng for a long time will end up with what you describe in 20 or 30 years. Building a fence that can be scaled, dug under or gone around by water that would take decades to build with money we do not have is, in my opinion, just eyewash and another government boon doggle. The Great Wall of China – I don’t think so.

ron paul 2012 perry is a sucker

  14. Dan Smith Says:

    jake,

I like a lot about Ron Paul, particularly on economics (and he is spot on regarding the Federal Reserve)but disarmamnet and IRAN having deliverable nukes really worries me. I think we should bring the troops home (from Iraq,Korea, Afghanistan, the horn of Africa, Germany, Japan and Libya – I am sure I missed a few places) but to disarm as Ron Paul proposes and go into isolationism smacks of out of touch with reality. This is a world economy and the days of isolationism being an option are gone.

The Federal Reserve is unconstitutional too. Ron Paul is spot on about that.

He is also spot on about no more nation building – every war we have been involved in since WWII has smacked of the United Nations with no declaration of war by the Congress of the U.S. Korea is still just an armistice – never ended!

    Regards,

    Retired Marine

  15. George Says:

Rico the RINO (AKA Rico Suave, Slick Rick) is going to have a hard uphill battle to get the Republican nomination. He’s a spineless, flip-flopping political opportunist if I’ve ever seen one. People will soon start to see through his ruse.

  16. Dan Smith Says:

    George,

And Romney is what? Recall that Regan was a Democrat?

    Retired Marine

  17. George Says:

Mitt Romney is as much a RINO as Perry.

I prefer consistency in a candidate. Someone who rejects the status-quo. Someone with a firm grip on the realities that plague our economy. Someone who understands the meaning of the term “blowback”. A candidate that has served in the military, and understands the constitutional authority granted to declare war resides in the legislative branch of government. I prefer a candidate that understands that the Federal government has overstepped its constitutional mandate on almost every front, and is the main threat to our liberty, and security as a nation.

    I prefer Ron Paul.

My kids and I are American citizens.
Since my parents were born in Irelend and immigrated here legally, my kids and I also have Irish passports.
My son wants to attend Univ of Texas, but as FL residents the TX out-of-state tuition is too high.
Our plan is for him to move to TX, declare himself an illegal immigrant from Ireland and qualify for in-state TX tuition.
    Problem solved.

  19. perry snapshot Says:

I lived in Texas for 6 years, and Perry’s a typical big shot Texan:
In love with himself. Believes he can do no wrong. Instinctively dismisses all ideas outside of his narrow Texas experience. Vindictive against non-Texans. Rigid in thought, never intellectually agile or flexible. Uses fake “folksy” guy act to non-Texans. Loyal to Texas before nation. That’s why fellow Texans proudly elected him.
If that’s what you admire, have at it. Texas, DC, and NYC should secede together.

  22. Ron Cameron Says:

Children of illegals, many of whom have lived in Texas most of their lives and paid taxes in Texas, are not getting anything FREE by attending a State college. They are Texas residents, why would we not want them to get the best education possible? Our Legislature voted 146 to 4 in favor of this. Had Perry vetoed it, it would have been over-ridden!

  23. luckydog Says:

So why would anyone want to be a citzen?
There seems to be a problem with the word ILLEGAL; it does not have any meaning anymore.
Maybe we need to call these people law breakers, scofflaws, selective law abiders, or something else. If I aeeempt in Mexico what they are doing in the USA they would call me an inmate or corpse.
