Does term limits ruling mean end of the line for commission veterans Marcus, Aaronson?

by George Bennett | August 10th, 2011

In a case Palm Beach County has been watching closely, the Fourth District Court of Appeals today reversed a Broward County judge’s ruling and upheld that county’s voter-approved term limits law for county commissioners.

Palm Beach County’s term limits law has not been challenged. But the 4th DCA has jurisdiction over Palm Beach County, so a ruling overturning Broward term limits would have also overturned Palm Beach County’s limits.

It’s likely today’s ruling will be appealed to the Florida Supreme Court by foes of term limits.

Palm Beach County Commissioners Karen Marcus (elected in 1984) and Burt Aaronson (elected in 1992) both face term limits in 2012. Marcus has said she’d consider running for an eighth term and Aaronson said he’d definitely run for a sixth term if term limits were overturned.

  1. Searcher Says:

PLEASE, no more LIFETIME commissioner. They have been in too long, owe too many favors and need to move on.

  2. Hopeful Says:

We don’t need continued queen and king in PBC. Fingers crossed.

Let them run in 4 years if they are so loved. There is nothing wrong with taking 4 years off.

  3. Brian O'Donaghey Says:

Like all corporate-bought and owned members of congress and the president, vote all incumbents out, regardless of their party affiliation..

    They’re all tainted.
Send the same message to their successors.

    Limit terms at all levels.

  4. Had enough Says:

After watching what career politicians have done to this nation, one can only hope that ALL incumbents, of both parties, will be voted out of office.

We have to stop electing people who put their own, or party interests, ahead of common sense, fiscal sanity, freedom and the survival of the nation.

Term limits should apply to ALL elected positions, Local, State and National!

  5. Robert Says:

Vote ALL Incumbents out. This is the only way to hold them accountable for what they have done while in office. NO MORE SPECIAL ENTITLEMENTS IE Health Insurance, and Retirement packages. LIVE LIKE The REST of the citizens, this includes LOWERING your salaries and benefits. I believe this will help you think before you VOTE. No more career politicians, in fact I don’t even want a politician in a political office period. Insead I want Working CLASS American Citizens like Carpenters, Plumbers, and Doctors, people that understand what REAL WORKING AMERICANS CITIZENS need, Like Colonel Mike McCalister who clams NOT to be a politician, which LOVES his Country.

  6. Fed Up Says:

As a resident in Commissioner Marcus’s district I would like to thank her for her service and would like to point out that northern Palm Beach County would not be the desirable place that it is without her. If she were able to run again I would vote for her. Thank you Commissioner Marcus!

  7. INFORMED VOTER - VOTE THEM OUT OF OFFICE Says:

THE PEOPLE THAT BITC* THE MOST ARE THE ONES THAT NEVER VOTE.

IF THESE VOTERS WOULD DO LESS BITC*ING, AND GET TO THE POLLS ON ELECTION DAY, THESE POLITICAL ROACHES, DISGUISED AS “PUBLIC SERVANTS” WOULD HAVE BEEN RELIEVED OF THEIR “DUTIES” LONG AGO.

CAN THE P.B.P. DO A LITTLE JOURNALISM FOR A CHANGE, AND OBTAIN SPECIFIC FINANCIAL INFORMATION ON THE COST TO THE TAXPAYERS WHEN THESE TWO POLITICAL ROACHES START CASHING IN ON THEIR PENSION AND BENEFITS??

IT IS DISGUSTING HOW MUCH THESE TWO HAVE SIPHONED FROM TAXPAYER’S MONEY TO DATE, AND HOW MUCH MORE THEY ARE GOING TO COST THE TAXPAYERS WHEN THEY “RETIRE”.

STILL REMEMBER READING ABOUT BAR INCIDENT IN JUPITER WHEN THE SPOUSE AT THAT TIME OF ONE GOT ARRESTED ON DRUG-RELATED CHARGES, AND SOMEHOW THE OTHER ONE FOUND A WAY TO “WIGGLE” OUT OF IT.

  8. Philip Blumel Says:

Burt and Karen are term limited and the court upheld the term limit. For them to run again would require further appeal to the Florida Supreme Court and, less likely, a victory there. No, this is the end of the line for Burt and Karen as commissioners. It is unfair to the potential legal candidates in this race to encourage the uncertainty on this point. Naturally, whether or not one is facing an incumbent is a (the?) key factor in the decisiobn whether or not to run for a seat. See http://www.pbctermlimits.com

  9. wyn Says:

Please Commissioners Marcus and Aaronson, if you have any integrity and ethics leave at the end of your term. We need new people who care about the taxpayers and who have new ideas for the 21st century. Haven’t they given up enough of our land and money to corporations and developers. They were supposed to be public servants, but they only served themselves under the guise of helping the taxpayer. WAKE UP PEOPLE!

  10. Term Limits Says:

Term Limits for all elected officials. The end of the career politician is coming soon. Welcome to the 21st century.

  11. AK Says:

    To Burt and Karen:
Thank you for your service. Term limits decree that it is time for you to move on.

Please go away, far, far away and do not come back. We need fresh, hopefully honest, taint free candidates to run this Corruption County.
