Elvis or Chuck Berry? Bachmann stirs ‘Promised Land’ debate
by George Bennett | August 30th, 2011Forget the drilling/conservation or church/state debates fueled by Republican presidential hopeful and recent Florida barnstormer Michele Bachmann. Her use of Elvis Presley‘s Promised Land as intro music at her rallies leaves PostOnPolitics.com wondering which version is better: Presley’s 1974 rendition or the original 1965 release by Chuck Berry.
You be the judge. And note the pronunciation of “a la carte” in Berry’s original and Presley’s cover.

I like both versions of Elvis and Chuck Berry’s ‘Promised Land’. Chuck’s is low key and Elvis’ is high power. Both different as chalk and cheese.

I’m sure Elvis wouldn’t mind that idiot Bachmann using his song, even though she wished him a happy birthday on the anniversary of his death.

What about the Grateful Dead version? I’m sure this is really Bachmann’s favorite.

Are you kidding me? Of course Chuck Berry’s version is better. He wrote it and still performs it in concert.

The songs starts better, the Chuck Berry way, but after the seconf verse, it soon falls a tad behind Presley’s version. Both pretty good, anyways

Elvis did every song his own, also the great “Promised Land”. He will always be the King.

I have all the respect in the world for Chuck Berry. He is the first singer/somgwriter in rock history, and one of the first great guitarists. However, I’m sorry Elvis was a far superior vocalists, and his version of Promised Land is truly great.

Chuck is one of the best songwriters ever in rock & roll history, but Elvis IS “The King of Rock & Roll”
