With some conservatives opposed, West emerges as key supporter of new Boehner plan

by George Bennett | July 26th, 2011

Boehner campaigning for West in West Palm Beach last October.

Freshman tea party U.S. Rep. Allen West, R-Plantation, is supporting House Speaker John Boehner‘s new debt-ceiling plan — potentially providing important cover for other tea partyers who say the plan doesn’t go far enough.

West announced his support Monday night via Twitter, tweeting: “I will support the new debt deal- it has enough of what I need including no tax hikes, spending caps and a step toward a balanced budget.”

Boehner’s plan calls for $1.2 trillion in cuts over 10 years in exchange for a $1 trillion increase in the debt ceiling. That means Congress will have to revisit the debt ceiling early next year. President Obama wants a debt ceiling increase that will get beyond the 2012 election.

It’s not clear today whether Boehner’s plan has enough Republican votes to pass. Rep. Jim Jordan, R-S.C., head of the conservative Republican Study Committee, came out against it.

Rep. Tom Rooney, R-Tequesta, is studying the Boehner plan and hasn’t announced a position, his office said.

Drive thru PB Island now – you’ll see homes averaging $15 million each sitting emtpy. Why? Their owners are at one of their other 3 homes somewhere else. While many American struggle to pay their bills in a rental apartment, while seniors miss meals because they can’t afford to eat and pay for their prescriptions, West refuses to make the super rich pay even one penny more in taxes. The rich got massive tax reductions during the Bush years that together with the illegal war in Iraq that was not paid for in any Bush Republican budget caused this deficit, the Republicans now want to make the working poor pay for it all. The rich can afford to pay taxes at the Clinton tax rates that created a surplus and created millions of jobs. West is an idiot war monger Republican who along with his Republican pals will destroy this nation.

  2. Peter Schorsch Says:

The horrible irony of Lois Frankel’s criticism of Allen West’s alleged misoginy

  3. LaQuishaNiqua Jones Says:

Hey Danny…the rich already pay 90% of the taxes…how much more blood can you get out of a turnip?

How about the rest of the America paying some of their fair share? You can bet your last penny that if all had to pay a percentage, that these budget talks would sure have a different ending. When all have to pay…well then the spenditol pill gets thrown away and some common sense will apply.

Hey Danny…if you had to give up some of yo monee bet you would demand some changes in Washington. Its easy to bitch when ya got no dog in the fight.

  4. Concerned Senior Says:

We are seniors. We are on a fixed income. We come to Florida to be represented and lobbied for to ensure we never lose our hard earned benefits. The republicans are trying to take away from us to give to their rich friends. Now they are even proposing medicaid cuts too. We depend on our entitlements for survival. Between us, and Florida’s disabled, 40% of our state gets benefit checks each month. Take away any of it and watch how many businesses go under. Real estate and construction is done, seniors are all you have left. Don’t make us angry because if we leave this state you have no other industry to fall back on.

  5. Peter Says:

How much money do we have to give to the rich before they start creating the jobs the Republicans have been promising us.For decades now we have given more and more breaks to corporations and the rich and all we’ve seen for it is jobs for third world countries.

  6. bt Says:

I’m glad Allen West is supporting this plan. We need something to get the federal government back towards reality. They will still be spending way more than they are taking in, but thjis is the first punch of a long fight to come. Eventually all the benefits will run out because continuing to raise the debt only leads to a bigger chunk of the budget going for the interest. Soon all the revenues will be needed to service the debt, then what?

  7. RR Says:

Thank you to Allen West. The Democrats are busy scaring seniors with lies about social security and medicare. They’re pretending everything can go on as it is. It’s just not true. We need conservative, intelligent people like West and Boehner to reintroduce some sanity. The “rich” are already paying most of the country’s taxes. Obama seems just to want to punish success. Let’s all go on welfare – is that better?

  8. HM Says:

What!!! Allen West actually took time out from his ‘Future Incendiary Talk Radio/TV Pundit’ practice to throw a dart at a board and support whatever nutty policy it landed on?

Great! Now that that’s settled, he can go back into meetings to see what the next kooky thing will be to come vomiting out of that hole in his face!

  9. I can see for miles Says:

Comments 4 and 5 come from a democrat operative, maybe even Lois herself.

  10. loxboy Says:

Once again nobody pays attetion to the proposals. Senoir citizens(age 55 and up) will not be affected by the new medicare proposal. Only those 54 and younger. They call these entitlements, they are entitlements for the people that don’t or never paid into them. This is your money they play with. Tell them to stop giving it to undeserving people. The same with your SS money. You paid, it’s yours, not theirs. go check a SS office and see if Any senoir citizens ar there. On the rich. You idots that want to destroy America, your not fooling anyone. Tax the rich and more jobs go away. HAs anyone of you ever worked for poor person???

  11. Chicken Little Says:

    The sky is falling!

…hopefully it will land on West and Boehner

  12. Medicare Says:

To Those Crying About GOP & Medicare Cuts…

Why didn’t you cry and complain and protest when Barry Hussein Obama took…

    $500 BILION BILLION with a “B”

FROM Medicare and those American citizens who paid into and earner their benefits and give it to Medicaid to illegal aliens and those who HAVE NOT earned it

  13. SOUTHERN YANKEE Says:

I was feeling better about this. Now that West is trying to grab credit, that strange sickness is coming back again. Retirees: Grab your wallets!!!

  14. Karen Says:

I’m just thankful that a new episode of “The Closer” aired last night. I really didn’t want to hear our president whine some more about throwing granny off the cliff, into a snowbank, etc. That highy incendiary, inaccurate, populist rhetoric gets really old.

  15. Patriot Says:

Republicans raised the debt celing 7 times when there was a Republican President.

There is NO DEBT CRISIS. There is, however, a trillion dollar ‘entitlement’ called The Bush Tax Cuts.

Republicans everywhere….especially the America-hating scoundrels on THIS message board….are lying to you. About 6 guys invent the lies, feed it to Rupurt Murdoch’s Fox News and Rush Limbaugh over on the island, they spread the lies, and robotic Flavor Aid drinkers like those above buy into it them thoughtlessly.

    Thats how it works.

  16. Chuck Says:

Average Americans pay a LARGER percentage of their income toward taxes than the rich? Why should all of us be penalized because these greedy a$$holes refuse to contribute to our democracy during wartime?
Why are all of us asked to sacrifice but the rich are not?
I DO NOT see them creating any jobs.

  17. Richard Says:

I find it amazing that the speaker of the house, Boehner has to call Rush Limbaugh to get approval of the bill him and his communist friends want to send to the floor, and just so all you republican communistic idiots know the bill will be dead on arrival, the republicans want to put all working class people who make less than 50 K per year on the poor farm and end all social safety network programs and I hope they suceed, we don’t need police, fireman, soldiers and we can eliminate every single federal regulation so the economy can grow and we can compete with China, this is the new republican plan, and if your old and retired and didn’t save enough money to retire thats too bad, if your sick and don’t have insurance then borrow from your children, if you loose your house, there are tent cities all over the US, go there and live, but don’t think for one minute that your going to make me and my republican friends pay more taxes so you can stay alive, its not going to happen.

  18. lulu Says:

How about stop paying Billions of dollars in pork! Or how about stop handing out money to other countries or better yet, how about term limits for congress and senate and they get the same health care as I get. Lets not even get started on their retirement! Stop taking money from the working class.

  19. Kevin Says:

To the republicans who say it’s ok to cut Medicare benefits for those who are 54 and younger I say you can just stick it where the sun don’t shine moron. The 20 and 30 something republicans still think they have a chance to get rich and enjoy the tax cuts they help pass today in the future. Wake up and get real kiddies, unless you plan to inherit your fortune or are an unscrupulous financial whiz kid on his way to Wall Street where you will spend your time screwing the rest of humanity chances are it’s not going to happen. I am going to be 52 in a few weeks and this does not sit well with me. I have never received a hand out from anyone and have been employed every single day of my life since July of 1978. Over the years I have paid well over $100K into the system. You can pass your little piece of pro wealthy people, anti elderly legislation but I will be damned if I will let you keep the money I paid in. I want every penny I paid into SSI back first. That’s every penny got it!!!!!!

  20. Tom Says:

Wonderful. The Boehner Plan will put off this deficit raising travesty for six months and then the no compromise mess will be back front and center. West is just another right wing wacko who will be one term and out.

  21. West is a RINO Says:

WEST IS A RINO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WEST IS A RINO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. NOBAMA Says:

west pussied out he talks tough but is showng noballs. At least Rooney hasn’t commiitted, yet!!! Boehner’s plan is weak. No real cut just a reduction in future growth of spending. Roll back federal budget to 2004 of before levels. Of course obama has operated without a budget for over 825 days…

  23. Tea Lady Says:

How unfortunate! Mr. West seems to have lost his way.

The Way is Cut, Cap, and Balance. By contrast, Mr. Boehner’s “plan” falls FAR short. Far far short.

I’m disappointed with Mr. West’s decision to not only vote for this temporary “plan”, but to pursuade others to vote for this “plan”.

Mr. West, at this point, has lost my vote.
