Poll shows Obama winning war of words on debt ceiling

by John Kennedy | July 14th, 2011

Florida congressional Democrats and Republican have been sparring over who to blame if the standoff over raising the debt ceiling leads to a government default.

But a Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday shows President Obama may be winning the war of words.

The survey of 2,311 voters across the nation, shows:

*Voters will blame Republicans over Obama 48 – 34 percent if the debt limit is not raised;

* Voters say 67 – 25 percent that an agreement to raise the debt ceiling should include tax hikes for the wealthy and corporations, not just spending cuts;

* Voters say 45 – 37 percent that Obama’s proposals to raise revenues are “closing loopholes,” rather than “tax hikes.”

And who do voters blame for the nation’s lousy economy?

“”Americans overwhelmingly disapprove of President Obama’s handling of the economy, but by 2-1 they pin the blame on former President George W. Bush rather than Obama, who is now more than 60 percent through his term of office,” said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

    I think we were in deep —- befor Obama
    gained office so it would of taken more than 4-short years to get us out of the mess we were in. I don’t agree with making Social Security recipacants suffer because our goverment cant stop bickering. I think we should send a few cases of diapers and some pacifiers to all of them..They have shown nothing short of childish behavior in the past for years, the replubicans are just simply embarrassing to watch… Yes I support Obama and Yes I’am a Republican…

    I was just wondering if you could post the names of the 10 illegals that was questioned for this poll.. and i would be very happy answering a question in the next poll you have on this matter and the subject obama.If you delete this post the your poll and and your blog are racist.

  3. The truth Says:

    the truth of the matter is that we will not default on paying the servicing on the debt if the debt ceiling is not raised. Servicing the debt is only 10% of our revenues. Also, keep in mind social security is paid for with the money taken out of pay checks (ponzi scheme) so that will not default either. In fact we will be able to pay the debt servicing, social security payments, medicare payments, our soldiers without even spending all of the money we will take in in August.

    These are the irrefutable facts that the idiots in DC don’t want us to know and which would be inconvenient for the liberal media to print because it would show obama for the liar he is.

    Hey, but let’s keep blaming bush. What he did was stupid but what obama is doing will destroy America!!!!!!

  4. Same Old, Same Old Says:

    Again . . . this guy is so corrupt, opportunistic, a well documented liar, and now viciously mean spirited (about SS checks).

    ALL he (they) want is a government dedicated to destroying capitalism and installing themselves as socialist rulers by overwhelming the system using the Cloward-Piven Plan.

  5. Marie Says:

    Republicans are ridiculously stubborn and pig-headed. Is it really about deficit and debt reduction for the Republicans? An offer for 4 TRILLION dollars in spending cuts over ten years as well as 1 Trillion in Revenue increases.. NO. Shot down by the GOP. These absolutist ideologues are not budging and it shows that they are willing to take this country down.

  6. Indie Says:

    Sorry, do not side with Obama on this or the democrats.

    Republicans need to get rid of the old faces who ‘communicate’ to the media. Mitch is an old guy who when presented on tv you don’t even want to listen to.

    That goes for Obama, also. Everytime he’s on tv it’s the same old talk, nothing new-which I expected from him.

    Obama’s leadership has not helped Americans. He is a detriment to our country.

  7. Plead the 5th 75 Times Says:

    To retalitate, Fox News will now start hacking into the voicemail of all poll participants who blame the Republicans and former president Bush.

    First, let me commend you James on your excellent use of grammar! Secondly, how come every time a poll comes out that a Republican doesn’t agree with it has to be that the pollster is lying, the questions were biased, or they only asked illegals or democrats? Clearly out of 2,311 people- there had to be a mix of non-illegals and conservatives. Just because you don’t agree with it doesn’t mean it’s not true.

  9. Dmann Says:

    Peter Brown’s a dufus. Blame Bush?!! Blame Obama, blame damn Grover by God Cleveland. These people are clueless beyond belief. They all need to go play 60 or something. A collection of dopes, that prove that “higher education” is a rip off and over rated.

  10. james Says:

    Sal, thanks…You too show good grammer with your run on sentences..By the way, in my post i did post that i was dem,rep,lib or independent..You are so quick to judge me.. Let me guess,your a independent liberal democrat.

  11. Rob Says:

    That Republicans will not concede that increased revenues are not needed is just plain dumb. An individual who maxes out his credit cards and has a $1,000.00 minimum monthly payment that is not within his budget would get a second job to increase his revenue. But this obvious solution that responsible consumers would utilize is rebuffed by Republicans. When will the middle class wake up and realize that Republicans do not represent them. They represent the wealthiest, most miserly segment of society. In France, there was a revolution when this behavior continued unchecked. Republicans would be wise to start giving some ground before we remove them from Congress and resurrect the tax rates from the 1950s, which were between 70 and 91%. Check Wikipedia if you think I’m making these numbers up.
