Hasner forms U.S. Senate exploratory committee
by George Bennett | March 16th, 2011
Former state House Majority Leader Adam Hasner of Boca Raton has opened an exploratory committee for a 2012 GOP bid for U.S. Senate with Republican superlawyer Cleta Mitchell handling the paperwork in Washington, a Hasner adviser confirms.
Hasner, who has spent the last month or so crisscrossing the state talking to local GOP activists and attending Lincoln Day dinners, appears poised to join a crowded Republican field hoping to unseat two-term Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson. Other potential GOP candidates include state Senate President Mike Haridopolos, former appointed U.S. Sen. George LeMieux, U.S. Rep. Connie Mack and wealthy Delray Beacher Nick Loeb.
Hasner served in the state House from 2002 to 2010. Many expected him to run for Congress or state Senate when he ran into term limits, but Hasner announced in 2009 that he’d sit out the 2010 cycle while his wife Jillian managed Meg Whitman’s campaign for governor in California.

Wouldn’t bet on him going far. He’ll bank on inventing some kind of Marco connection and it sounds like some liberal media types like him, but that won’t win you anything.

A bit of advice: don’t let Jill run your campaign.

Hasner is going to be a formidible candidate in the primary and the general election. There is not a harder working candidate who knows the grassroots in this state. His fundraising prowess also has national appeal, so he will be competitive with raising $$$. Finally, he will be the conservative candidate in the race hands down.

I like Hasner, but I’ll pay attention to results in the end. Haridopolous raised money for Marco Rubio back when Charlie was still a Republican, and now he’s sticking to his conservative message in the Senate. That’s something conservatives need to keep in mind.

I’d be great if Hasner took on Nelson. This guy understands what’s really going on in the State. He returns calls and answers emails. Try getting Nelson to respond with anything except a form letter giving the Obama party line.

Best of luck to him, I guess. Of course, it’s just one more candidate who could split the vote enough to let George “YAY I’m A Charlie Crist Republican!” Lemieux sneak out with a primary win. As a conservative, that makes me really nervous.

Read the gossip column in the Palm Beach Sun this month – palmbeachsun.net – there’s an interesting bit about his wife working for Meg Witman in California.
