Rep. Allen West and Democratic campaign chief share admiration for Civil War bayonet charge

by George Bennett | February 28th, 2011

Artist Mort Kunstler's depiction of Col. Joshua Chamberlain leading bayonet charge at Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg.

Some Democrats were aghast at Republican Allen West’s references to bayonets during his successful 2010 congressional campaign. West (as at this West Palm Beach tea party rally) was invoking Union Col. Joshua Chamberlain, who helped change the course of the Civil War at Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg.

Chamberlain

Another Chamberlain fan, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Steve Israel of New York, was in Palm Beach last week recruiting potential West challengers for 2012.

  1. Joseph L Cooke Says:

I will bow to Col. West’s expertise since he’s actually seen combat.

  2. Cynical Idealist Says:

Mr. Cooke….Don’t bow down to people who talk about their combat experience. The real heroes don’t need to talk about it. West hasn’t seen much, if any, combat. As a field grade officer, a LTC, he rarely would have been in a position to actually “mix it up” with the enemy.

  3. Chris Says:

Joseph, you can bow to ANY of our active military personnel/ANY of our Vet’s who defend our freedom! If ANY of our Warriors share their combat experience feel privileged. Some don’t want to share and others need to share-especially our “Wounded Warriors”-in fact for some it’s healthy to share. I want to thank you for your support of our Warriors/Vets!

  4. Ed Grady Says:

Rep. Allen West appeals to Hillary
to address U.K.’s ban of Savage

  5. Another Colonel Says:

“Cynical Idealist” is kinda, but not really, right — as a field grade officer he “‘RARELY’ would have been in a position to mix it up with the enemy” (unless he did it right). But in a bunch of years as a company grade officer he would have. Your comment about him seeing ” (not) much, if any, combat” is uninformed, stupid, and really, really inappropriate and disrespectful.

  6. nemo Says:

The men behind those bayonets, on both sides, were true patriots who took their lives in their hands and did their duty. The soldiers in both Blue and Grey were fighting for what they believe…just like Allen West, the Tea Baggers, and men & women of all faiths, races & religions.

Our President & the Atty. Genl. are suing the State of Arizona, they are coming down on the side of drug lords, murderers, and all the worst kind of criminals. He(obama) is lining up with the criminals against the law abiding people of Arizona…which State will be next?

Thank God for men like Col West, and curse anti-American useful idiots like obama & holder.

  7. Mannix Says:

Attn. George Bennett- get a grip!

The current DNC/Acorn cadre of America bashing leftists have no interest in Col Chamberlain, Gen’l Grant, Abe Lincoln, oh let’s see… Gen’l Washington, Gen’l Patton, Audie Murphy, Jack Kennedy and on and on !!

Allen West has an in-depth knowledge of what happened on July 2nd, 1863.
Steve Israel is groping in the darkness for slogans… his true champion of history is Che Guevera!
