Eye on 2012 Senate race as LeMieux speaks at Forum Club today

by George Bennett | December 6th, 2010

U.S. Sen. George LeMieux’s appearance at a Forum Club of the Palm Beaches lunch today in West Palm Beach puts the spotlight on Florida’s 2012 U.S. Senate race.

Republican LeMieux is winding down a 16-month gig after being appointed by Gov. Charlie Crist in 2009. At the time, Crist was the 2010 Republican Senate frontrunner and LeMieux, his former campaign manager and chief of staff, was seen as a seatwarmer for his ex-boss. LeMieux ended up campaigning for Marco Rubio when Crist bolted the GOP for an independent bid.

Now LeMieux is seen as one of several potential Republican candidates for 2012, when Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson is up for reelection. Some other Republicans to watch: former state House Majority Leader Adam Hasner of Boca Raton, new state Senate President Mike Haridopolos and U.S. Reps. Connie Mack and Vern Buchanan from Florida’s west coast.

  1. Ron Jordan Says:

Mack wins this hands down. He has far more name id than any other candidate. LeMieux is responsible for the “left turn”by Charlie Crist…and he has never been elected to anything. Hasner is dreaming…he would be lucky to win a State Senate seat. This race comes down to Mack (who is the frontrunner), Haridopolus (who can extort money from lobbyist as Senate President) and Buchanan (who can self finance).

  2. Craig Bachler Says:

I believe that Vern was speculated to run by a reporter from sarasota, but that is only looking more like a false story.
LeMieux, based on his voting in DC is looking good as a real conservative. The others are trying to run on name sake or hoping to have the big corrupt political machine to back them.
    I support LeMieux.

  3. KGray144 Says:

LeMeiux is a Charlie Crist Republican! We beat one of those this year, and we can do it again!

  4. papabear Says:

Yeah, Gray. Lemieux can say he’s a conservative now, but he’ll always be Charlie’s seatwarmer to me. He’s a Charlie man, and that’s all I need to know.

  5. used to like ley-moo Says:

Up until the food safety bill i liked georgie! that is a far reach for government… it eliminates farmers markets and does not actually do anything about foreign produce. so american produce goes up and more fecal infested stuff from mexico comes in!

  6. mi_orgullo51 Says:

y’all are ridiculous. and lemieux needs to stop being a republican hater and vote for the DREAM Act. these repukes are treating children like criminals and it’s wrong

  7. LizaH22 Says:

orgullo, the DREAM Act is AMNESTY! I gave up on Connie Mack after he opposed the Arizona law. If LeMieux votes for the DREAM Act, I won’t vote for him!

  8. KGray144 Says:

That makes two of us, Liza! Amnesty has got to be off the table. And don’t forget, LeMeiux’s man Charlie Crist wanted to give amnesty to help ‘save Social Security’.

  9. papabear Says:

LeMieux can vote however he does on the DREAM Act. At the end of the day, you don’t stay as a guy’s right hand man for ten years and expect me to buy that you’re so different from him now after he gives you a free Senate seat. I didn’t fall off the turnip truck yesterday.
