Tallahassee commissioner enters Fla. Democratic chairman’s race

by George Bennett | November 23rd, 2010

Gillum

Tallahassee City Commissioner Andrew Gillum says he’s running for chairman of the Florida Democratic Party. Gillum, 31, works as an organizer and money-raiser for the liberal People For the American Way Foundation. To be eligible for the state post, he plans to run for chairman of the Leon County Democratic Executive Committee in December.

Gillum joins Palm Beach County Democratic Chairman Mark Alan Siegel and former Alachua County state Sen. Rod Smith among those interested in replacing Karen Thurman, who’s stepping down in the middle of her four-year term.

Gillum says the party failed to get its message out in the Nov. 2 elections, which saw Dems lose four congressional seats, all five statewide races and seven legislative seats. Gillum says he hopes to encourage small donations to the party while also attracting financial heavy hitters.

  1. Demforlife Says:

This sounds like a Jon Ausman/Scott Maddox comeback if I’ve ever heard one. We saw how well that worked out in the past – NO THANK YOU!! Andrew Gillum would be nothing more than a puppet for Ausman and Maddox show.

  2. The Listening Post Says:

    This guy can’t raise money. Next . . .

  3. Gillum- what FL needs Says:

Andrew isn’t in league with Maddox or Ausman. He is young, talented and black- all things the FDP leadership could use an injection of.

He has raised millions for People for the American Way- and can do the same for the party.

And he is untarnished- after 8 years in public office- no scandal, loved by his constituents. If the FDP can somehow elect him Chair then they might pull of the 2012 election

  4. Jeff Says:

Andrew Gillum has served the City of Tallahassee for 8 years, and served it well. He has always put his constituents first, which is why they have re-elected him by overwhelming margins, and would make an outstanding FDP chair.

To those who say he can’t raise money, he has raised over $1 million dollars for PFAW as well as President Barack Obama. To me, that sounds like he can raise money.

He will be no person’s puppet and he will work to get Democrats elected in 2012. We need to move forward and Rod Smith represents the past, not the future.

Time for change and that change is Andrew Gillum.

  5. Debby Says:

He is young, black, smart and he can fundraise…that’s why they dont want him….next

  6. Robert Says:

Another young inexperienced but articulate black man with extreme leftist views. Sound familiar? He knows nothing beyond his indoctrination at FAMU. His assumption that the last elections upset was caused by “not getting the message out” is as funny as when Obama said it, and right on message with the Dems talking points. As a resident of Tallahassee I can assure you that his re-election was based on skin color and not accomplishments. Everything he has done has been to extort money for programs to bribe HIS people.
I hope he get selected as it will be a boon to the Repubs, insuring their dominance into the future.

  7. Fredrick Levitt Says:

Let them get a young woman that has nothing to do with these current losers they are pushing.

One Siegal..who think women wants his sugar
Two Smith…who we all know is owned by sugar
Three the young guy…who is sweet as sugar

We don’t need sugar…we need brains.
