Sink defends herself on MSNBC, gives conflicting explanation of ‘Debate-gate’

by Dara Kam | October 26th, 2010

Alex Sink appeared on MSNBC’s Hardball today to defend herself about breaking the rules during last night’s CNN debate by reading a cell phone message during a break.

But Sink’s explanation conflicts with an audio analysis of what transpired between the Democratic candidate for governor and the makeup artist who handed her a cell phone with a text message. Sink read the message, violating the debate rules she and opponent Rick Scott agreed to barring any contact with staff during the hour-long debate.

“Well, what happened was, Chris, last night that the makeup artist held up her phone and said I just got this message, I don’t know who it’s from. I looked at it because, you know, I’m a mom. My instinct is my daughter’s in Europe. I don’t know who this mefor governor’s message is from. I glanced at it. I didn’t understand even what it was, and I just ignored it,” Sink told the news show host Chris Matthews.

But CNN’s John King, who moderated Monday’s debate in Tampa, gave a different account of what happened.

On CNN on Tuesday, King said that the network analyzed the video of what Scott’s camp is calling “iCheat.”
“We listened to the audio very carefully and the makeup artist when she approached Alex Sink said she had a message from the staff, and it was two sentences and advice saying that if that question comes up, say this, and be more aggressive when Rick Scott questions you and it is clear she looked down to read it and candidate Scott called her out, and it is clear that she cheated in the final exam,” King said.

so when is she going to dignify the elections and step down from the race? All the things she represents has become a major stink, and worse, she was lying to the American public. I for one will never trust her again.

  2. David Says:

Politicians are appalling, lack integrity, devoid of ethics and morals. Sink is no exception. In a campaign statement, Sink even stated her repulsion regarding political lies and cheating…and her she is, a pathetic hypocrite.

  3. Ellen Rentz Says:

I just absolutely don’t believe CNN’s explanation. Maybe they are trying to make up for the fact that their moderator was horrible. He didn’t keep any control in the debate at all. And if Alex Sink said she didn’t realize what it was, then she didn’t. She is not a lying cheat like Scott. He would be the pot calling the kettle black.

  4. david porter Says:

someone should have given that poor woman a teleprompter, we need to level the playing field so Dems can keep up with the issues :)

  5. A. Sheridan Says:

It’s bad enough that she and her people knowingly broke the rules, but the really disgraceful part is that she lied about it. Darn those tv cameras and microphones that just pick up every little thing. She just dug her own “sink” hole.

  7. angela Says:

My goodness, Sink is not only a cheat but also a big liar. How can anybody trust her? She should excuse herself from the race and go far, far away.

  8. Loxahatche Says:

THis is the so called ethics she says she has. Alex ICheat Sink!

  9. Law Enforcement Violating Federal Laws By Getting Involved In Partisan Politics Says:

Breaking News: Government trained puppet insider responds as normal to handlers instructions! Nothing new here! This is why insiders say it is necessary for all government officials to have prior government experience so they can learn to heel, sit , stay and come upon demand! This race is so organized government for survival against one of the nation’s most successful businessmen who is a known expert at cutting waste and increasing productivity amd the leeches can’t stand it! Why their very coffe drinking, donut eating, water cooler hanging around , lying, cheating, scheming, existence is at stake here! Public servants have evolved into public nucseinces with lobotomies who daily convince themselves that they are of the greatest importance and in no way can society survive without their “services.” check Webster for the farmers definition of this word and you will see that fits very well to what we the voters and taxpayers are now suffering.

And that, dear people, is why this country is in the shape it's in. This woman is drinking the koolaid and refuses to believe the truth. WAKE UP AMERICA and vote these liars and cheats out of office next Tuesday!

  11. Sean Says:

These Rick Scott folk are clutching at straws, looking for any little thing to fling at Alex Sink because they know they’re deeply entrenched on the losing side.

Sorry that saying “Obama Liberal” didn’t work, fellas.

  12. Jay Dog Says:

Give me a break. And this affects our failing economy and education system policies HOW? Who gives a damn if she looked at something she had no idea what it was when placed in front of her. It didn’t affect the outcome of the debate and it didn’t relate to ANY ISSUE THAT FLORIDIANS need to be worried about! Let it go, Scott. You have bigger things to worry about. Go, Sink, go.

  13. Peggy Joseph Says:

Sink looks Florida in the face and blatantly lies about her cheating during the debate.

  14. RealAngst Says:

OMG! Alex Sink got a text message from a staffer and OMG, it changed how someone is going to vote!! What a load of crap. Scott stole billions of tax payer dollars and you idiots are ranting about a freaking text message.

  15. Ellen Rentz Says:

Yes, every poll that I have seen taken about the debate in the Tampabay area shows that Alex is the big winner of the night. Scott offered nothing but the same 70 million dollars worth of sound bites he has been saying since the beginning. Alex didn’t lie and if CNN is trying to jump in the fray it is probably because of the lousy job their moderator did controlling the debate. And @ANNA, this Rep and every Rep in my household has already voted out the cheat and lying Scott with our votes for Alex Sink!

  16. G from CT Says:

    2 questions….

Why would the aide have the make-up artists cell phone number and if Sink thought it was from her daughter why would her daughter text the make-up artist and not her Mom’s cell phone? She clearly got caught cheating and is making it worse by trying to cover it up…

  17. ELC Says:

BE SMART!VOTE INDEPENDENT OR NO PARTY AFFLIATION. I would not give either one of these losers my vote in early election. Everything both of them spew
are lies upon lies. Alex Sink just got
her nose stuck in the honey jar and boy
does she stink. Scott is no matter. Some
would say they are wasting their vote-I

  18. ELC Says:

TRUTH AND NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH? You have to wonder when both candidates lie
on a continous basis. They wouldn’t know
the truth if it bit them on the ***. They lie so much that they can’t distinguish the truth from their fabrications. Alex Sink is a perfect example. If she just came clean on CNN after this debacle-I would have had more
respect for her-not that I would vote for her. When you keep lying to the public like we are fools-you (Sink)have
egg on your face not us. Scott is no better-he is buying his election. That
doesn’t mean he knows what the heck he’s
talking about. Isn’t it sad that this is the best that both parties can put up
    for Governor?
