Crist ad rips Rubio on Social Security; Rubio camp claims ‘desperate false attack’by George Bennett | October 5th, 2010
Indie Senate candidate Charlie Crist’s new 30-second ad says Republican frontrunner Marco Rubio’s Social Security plan calls for seniors to “work longer, get by on less.” Then, although Rubio has never held federal office, the ad reaches for some anti-Washington mojo by saying: “That’s Washington for you — balance the budget on the backs of seniors.”
Rubio, eyeing Social Security’s long-term solvency problems, has said Congress should explore raising the retirement age and changing the way benefits are indexed for inflation — but he says any changes should not apply to current beneficiaries or anyone who’s now 55 and older.
Rubio’s camp calls the Crist ad “a desperate false attack” because “Crist knows that Rubio has pledged to protect and preserve Social Security for those who are at or near retirement.”
Crist pledges to make no changes to Social Security and says creating an “earned pathway to citizenship” for illegal immigrants would help the retirement system by generating more payroll tax collections.
Crist, who’s been trying to convince Democratic voters he’s the only candidate with a shot at overtaking Rubio, doesn’t mention Dem nominee Kendrick Meek, who remains a distant third in the polls.
