Kendrick Who? Crist camp says its poll points to a Crist-Rubio Senate race

by George Bennett | September 2nd, 2010

Independent Senate candidate Charlie Crist’s campaign released an internal poll that shows the race essentially tied between Gov. Crist (35 percent) and Republican Marco Rubio (34 percent) with Democratic nominee Kendrick Meek pulling 17 percent of the vote.

Says Crist campaign spokesman Danny Kanner: “The race for U.S. Senate is between two candidates: Charlie Crist–an independent leader who will go to Washington to fight for Florida by taking the best ideas from both parties to create jobs and rebuild our economy–and Marco Rubio, who would go to Washington to vote in lockstep with the political party bosses and special interests that got America into this mess in the first place.”

RE: Post Primary Track Poll

1. Ballot Vote is a Two-Way Choice.
U.S. Senate Vote

Charlie Crist
35%
Marco Rubio
34%
Kendrick Meek
17%
Undecided
14%

In the wake of the August 24th Primary election…
Charlie Crist holds a one-point lead;
Marco Rubio is essentially “tied” with Crist when margin of error is factored in – both well ahead of Kendrick Meek; and
Kendrick Meek appears to have gotten little to no bounce from the Democratic Primary.
In party registration breakdown…
Crist (37%) and Meek (37%) split the Democratic vote;
Rubio (66%) dominates the Republican vote, but Crist holds a solid 21% chunk.
Independents/unaffiliated voters break to Crist by 55% versus 24% for Rubio.

2. Candidate Ratings show Charlie Crist by far the most popular.
Charlie Crist remains by far the most popular candidate in race. The incumbent Governor is rated 60% positive, 34% negative.
Marco Rubio is rated more positive (45%) than negative (30%) but has little popularity outside Republican ranks.
Kendrick Meek is rated just 38% positive vs. 30% negative with modest 52% to 21% ratings among Democrats after his bruising Primary.

3. Summary.
Several factors point to the consistent dynamic of this race going forward as a Crist-Rubio battle…
Crist’s reservoir of positive image ratings (60%) above and beyond his current vote (35%);
Crist’s appeal across segments of all Democratic, Republican, and Independent vote;
Rubio’s solid standing and base with Republicans – that will keep his vote from dropping – but his limited appeal among Democrats and Independents; and
Kendrick Meek’s inability to consolidate Democratic vote and establish any beachhead vote with Independents during his Primary where Jeff Greene’s attack TV drove up Meek negatives and Meek exchanges isolated him to a portion of the Democratic vote.

  1. Calling on Kendrick Says:

    Mr. Meek, I am begging you to bow out of this race so that Crist can have a solid chance at defeating Rubio. If you care about our state, you will realize that all you are doing is making it more difficult for our state to win by electing a true leader (Crist) over a puppet (Rubio).

  2. Truthman Says:

    Crist needs to bow out and let the real Democrat win.

  3. brigitte Says:

    Meek should do the honorable thing by bowing out thereby saving himself and obama the embarassment of a bigtime loss. There’s no way possible that he can come even close to the future senator, Charlie Crist.

  4. Independent Voter Says:

    Give em hell Charlie!

  5. Moderate Democrat Says:

    Love my Party but must stop the hard right Rubio at any cost. Governor Crist is the man to do it.

  6. MARGARET Says:

    Eric Johnson stop blogging on this because the title has been Wexler who? As he pretends that is not guilty of all the stuff he had to resign for but still pulls the strings.

    YOU ARE NOT WELCOME HERE ANYMORE SELL OUT!

  7. Jeff Says:

    Meek sucks! Charlie is going to kick his ass! LOL!!!

  8. Jim Says:

    Charlie is a spoiler—he needs to get out and let the only Democrat in the race represent Democrats. Charlie only cares about Charlie!!!

  9. The Bell Tolls Says:

    Rubio is clearly the best man for the job.
