In CFO race, Dem Ausley hits Atwater over teacher merit pay billby George Bennett | September 7th, 2010
UPDATED with Atwater campaign response. In the web video above and on the campaign trail, Democratic chief financial officer candidate Loranne Ausley is blasting her GOP rival, state Senate President Jeff Atwater of North Palm Beach, over his support for a teacher merit-pay bill that was approved by the legislature this year but vetoed by Gov. Charlie Crist.
Get used to seeing Ausley in Palm Beach County over the next two months. Although the area is Atwater’s back yard, it’s also a Democratic stronghold that Ausley believes is key to winning the statewide race.

Atwater campaign spokesman Brian Hughes’ response:
Jeff Atwater has a clear record of support for education reforms that are putting more resources in the classroom to educate our kids, giving parents more choices in education, and better preparing future generations of Floridians to face the challenges of a global, 21st-Century economy.
As a result of these reforms, Florida is ranked higher in national assessments and Florida recently won the federal Race to the Top grant.
Now, Jeff Atwater is running a positive campaign for Chief Financial Officer. He is going to every Florida community to share his message of smaller government, stopping fraud and waste, and supporting the entrepreneurs who create jobs.
It is unfortunate that Loranne Ausley can only throw mud at Jeff Atwater. While he is talking to the voters of Florida, explaining his plan to champion economic recovery, Ausley is running a feeble, smear campaign.
