Democratic primary 2.0: Crist and Meek to appear at Forum Club Sept. 15; Meek radio ad hits Crist’s GOP past

by George Bennett | September 1st, 2010

Democratic Senate nominee Kendrick Meek and independent Gov. and Senate candidate Charlie Crist will appear at the Sept. 15 Forum Club of the Palm Beaches lunch in West Palm Beach. Republican nominee Marco Rubio was also invited, but couldn’t make it because of a scheduling conflict, Forum Club director Gayle Pallesen said.

The Crist-Meek pairing, while not the original intent of organizers, highlights what many Dems have come to view as a second Democratic primary in the Senate race. With former Republican Crist aggressively courting Democratic votes, Meek released a primary-style radio ad today highlighting Crist’s past professions of conservatism from his Republican days and telling voters — presumably Democrats — “Don’t be fooled.”

The Forum Club event isn’t a formal debate. Crist and Meek are each scheduled to make presentations, then answer audience questions. Tickets for the luncheon at the Kravis Center are $55 for the public and must be ordered in advance by calling 561-304-0570. Tickets are $30 for Forum Club members and $40 for club applicants and guests.

Crist has won the endorsements of a few elected Dems, including state Reps. Maria Sachs of Delray Beach, Daryl Rouson of St. Petersburg and Ari Porth of Coral Springs. Other influential Democrats say privately that Crist could add more Democratic support if Meek doesn’t gain traction in the polls by early October and Crist is seen as the only viable alternative to Rubio.

  1. Educator Says:

The fact of the matter is, the two most Democratic groups in the state of Florida: the unions and the teachers, have moved to Crist. The rest are just waiting for the right moment to do so. they don’t doubt that crist will caucus with the democrats once in the seat.

  2. Get real... Says:

Who gives a bunkus who he will caucus with? This isn’t a football game and we are not rooting for our favorite team. We are to choose the best person for the job and that is Charlie Crist — hands down!! He has finally made it clear that this election is about the people and not about the parties. Floridians would be complete idiots if they vote any other way!

  3. brigitte Says:

Meek should drop out of the race. I feel bad for him and the democrats. Lol. Go Charlie!

  4. RealAngst Says:

I will take Crist over Meek and Scumbag Rubio any day of the week!

  5. Michelle Says:

Has everyone forgotten about LOYALTY,MEANING WHAT YOU SAY, NOT SELLING OUT FOR VOTES LIKE CHARLIE CRIST HAS AND I’M SURE WILL DO UNTIL ELECTION TIME….KENDRICK MEEK IS THE CANDIDATE FOR ALL PARTIES AND PEOPLE!

  6. Kathy Says:

Sachs stop having your staff blog because you are all over the place and now backing Crist after backing Meek …you are all messed up & you are not going ot bring the party down with your Republican bs

  7. Kathy - Response Says:

I wish people would get real about kendrick, his wiki entry is embarrassingly little. there’s nothing to say about him, and calls to compare him to Obama are just wrong. My question is this, will he know what to do since he’s never passed one bill into law? NOT THE HOUSE NOT THE SENATE, NOT THE CONGRESS, AND CERTAINLY HE’LL DO NO BETTER IN THE SENATE. GREAT DEMOCRATIC TRAILBLAZER.

  8. theloneconsumer Says:

Crist is so content with being the Independent VOTE, but he got GOP money, then defected. So, he’s not so independent, is he?
Anyone else but me thought his TV comment about the GOP money, as he said, “was put to good use?” kind of smug wasnt it? No humility there. But no doubt, some of that $6 Mil his sister will spend on his personal bills…his secretary Rhonda did that the last US Senate campaign. Watch the expenditures….

  9. theloneconsumer Says:

For those that didnt know, Crist’s sister was made CAMPAIGN manager…a school principal w/ no experience…
