Allen West on Leonidas at Thermopylae and his Post-endorsed GOP primary rival

by George Bennett | August 11th, 2010

From Marathon to the Battle of Tours to Gettysburg to the Battle of the Bulge, one often gets a synopsis of military history when Republican congressional hopeful Allen West speaks. Here West, aiming to knock off Democratic U.S. Rep. Ron Klein in November, mentions Leonidas “at that gap in Thermopylae” in the 5th century B.C. offering his legendary “come-and-get-them” challenge to the Persians who demanded the Greeks’ weapons.

Later, West also mentions The Palm Beach Post editorial page’s recent endorsement of his unknown rival in the Aug. 24 Republican primary and (around the 6:15 mark) says, “I have every intention of making The Palm Beach Post pay for endorsing David Brady.”

PostOnPolitics, which is not connected to the editorial page or the paper’s endorsement decisions, asked West to elaborate. West, in an e-mail, explained that “…bottom line about PB Post paying for Brady endorsement, we are going to win. The best revenge is always success.”

  1. Go West Go Says:

Time to reclaim our country from the liberal hands that want to enslave us to entitlments.

Slaveray is Slavery… we want FREEDOM.

  2. mike brocato Says:

By the read of this pulp I guess they feel Allen West is too intelligent. Let’s see how the Palm Beach Post and the PostOnPolitics,( which is not connected to the editorial page??!!!) tries to take down the most qualified and honest candidate in this election. The Post is at best pitiful lackeys for a Socialist cause and more likely an out of date medium trying to be relevant.

  3. Jerry Says:

Sounds like Allen West is a sore loser. No one likes a sore loser. He’ll be even sorer in November.

  4. Ed Fulop Says:

Mike — I got the same “vibe” you did. Like George is trying to call Colonel West a history geek that the “cool kids” will beat up behind the gymnasium after school. Good stuff.

  5. Jack P Says:

Is Allen West not white enough for The Palm Beach Post?

  6. Scott Says:

What a comedic piece of writing by Curious George. I’d love to see you cowardly reporters say some of your garbage to the Colonal’s face. Tell me something.. Exactly how long did you guys spend serving and fighting for our nation? Nothing. You’ve contributed absolutely NOTHING and still continue to contribute nothing. You’re a waste to society. I actually have a proposal in place to help get our economy back on track. Take the money that is being wasted on you guys at Palm Beach and Broward Times and give it to workers and causes worthy enough to receive it. Sound good? Have a nice day ;)

  7. NOWEST Says:

Here he goes again with his violent military references, and his threats to those who oppose him.
Keep your head down Editorial staff or West might send some goons to pick pick you up for an ‘interrogation.’
West continues to demonstrate that he does not posses the proper demeanor or character to represent the people of District 22.
This is not a statesman, but a disgruntled dishonored soldier, trying to pick fights in an arena that is based on public discourse, and not rancorous division and violence.

  8. KNOW WEST Says:

No West, No Peace – Know West, Know Peace

  9. NOWEST Says:

    Know West???
    Allen West knows no Peace.
Know West and Know Hate, Fear, and Anger.

  10. Neal Lang Says:

“Sounds like Allen West is a sore loser. No one likes a sore loser. He’ll be even sorer in November.”

It sounds like Jerry is a depressed progressive “whistling past the graveyard!”

“Mike — I got the same ‘vibe’ you did. Like George is trying to call Colonel West a history geek that the ‘cool kids’ will beat up behind the gymnasium after school. Good stuff.”

The so-called “cool kids” better watchout for this “history geek” because he is “armed and dangerous!”

  12. Neal Lang Says:

“Is Allen West not white enough for The Palm Beach Post?”

It always been a “racist” newspaper!

“Here he goes again with his violent military references, and his threats to those who oppose him. Keep your head down Editorial staff or West might send some goons to pick pick you up for an ‘interrogation’.”

Great metafor – obviously you equate the “Post on Politics” to the tewrrorists in Iraq. Fit nicely!

“West continues to demonstrate that he does not posses the proper demeanor or character to represent the people of District 22.”

Really! I live in the District 22 and I believe he is exactly what we need in Washington – someone who has read the Constitution, knows what it says and has fought to preserve it on the battlefield. It that regard he is a lot more like George Washington than is Ron Kline!

“This is not a statesman, but a disgruntled dishonored soldier, trying to pick fights in an arena that is based on public discourse, and not rancorous division and violence.”

You wouldn’t know an honorable man if you tripped over him. The best way to tell an honorable soldier from say a John Kerry is to ask those troops who had served with him and under him. Bringing his troops back alive is the most honorable thing a soldier can do!

  14. Neal Lang Says:

    “Allen West knows no Peace.”

    Most great soldiers never do!

“Know West and Know Hate, Fear, and Anger.”

    You are projecting!

  15. Neal Lang Says:

“Later, West also mentions The Palm Beach Post editorial page’s recent endorsement of his unknown rival in the Aug. 24 Republican primary”

I wonder if the reason the Post endorsed totally unknown and qualified Brady in the Republican Primary is only because Lt. Col. West polls better than Klein!

  16. Don't Go West Says:

ALLEN WEST IS A VIOLENT AND ANGRY MAN.

  17. RUFKM Says:

Did he really say Democrats are going to tax 65% of citizens income? What a F’ng Liar and Fearmonger.

  18. Tyler Sutton Says:

I agree with the RUFKM. The 65% marginal tax rate thing is completely untrue. West is just trying to scare people into a vote, which is standard operating procedure for him.

  19. NOWEST Says:

Hey Neal you might live in District 22 but West does not. I suppose he is not brave enough to challenge his own Congresswoman.

  20. Ed Fulop Says:

Looks to me like you Klein-ers are the ones who are scared, just like your champion. Why will he not debate Colonel West in an open forum? He can’t face his constituents, let alone his challenger.

1-800-GO-U-HAUL, Mr. Klein. Thank you for your service. See you ’round campus.

  21. Boris Says:

The management of the PBP couldn’t be more politically activist; their integrity couldn’t be more compromised. The good news is the people of south Florida know this all too well. This will backfire on them come November 2, 2010. Mark my words!

  22. NOWEST Says:

    @Fulop
West is the one evading primary debates from his Republican competitor David Brady.
West hasn’t even made it out of the primary yet.
Hard to imagine why a Military Contractor like WEST wants to perpetuate war rhetoric when America is no longer interested in killing all of West’s mortal enemies in countries overseas.
    ISLAMAPHOBIA = BIGOTRY = UNAMERICAN

  23. Einstein Says:

Im gonna vote for Col. West. Hes certaintly the most eloquent and qualified for the job.

  24. EdFulop Says:

Brady is a DNC plant – never even registered to vote before, and no one knows anything about, but got on the ballot with signatures!? Lois Frankel can’t even pull that one off, and she’s been the bloody mayor for 8 years!!! Dirty tricks department is in full swing!!

  25. Tyler Sutton Says:

Ya Ed, you really caught the DNC red-handed with this conspiracy. That is the problem with the Tea Party and the 912 and Col. West, you all are just way too paranoid.

If it is not a DNC scheme, it is a socialist takeover. If it is not a socialist takeover, it is Islamic infiltration. We are basically headed for another Red Scare. Joseph McCarthy would have been proud.
