Poll: Crist leads 3-way Senate race, guv contest a squeaker; voters down on Obama, drilling, health care law

Republican-turned-independent Gov. Charlie Crist leads the general election race for U.S. Senate with 37 percent to 32 percent for Republican Marco Rubio and 17 percent for leading Democrat Jeff Greene, a new Quinnipiac University poll finds.

If U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek is the Democratic nominee, he gets only 13 percent of the vote, with Crist at 39 percent and Rubio at 33 percent, the poll says. Crist was also the leader in an early-June Quinnipiac poll.

Quinnipiac finds a tight November governor’s race. In a poll that has a 3.2 percent margin of error, GOP frontrunner Rick Scott would get 29 percent to Democrat Alex Sink’s 27 percent, with independent Bud Chiles pulling 14 percent.

If Attorney General Bill McCollum is the Republican nominee, he tops Sink by a 27-to-26 percent margin, with Chiles at 14 percent.

Quinnipiac released polls Thursday showing wealthy self-financed outsiders Greene and Scott holding double-digit leads in their respective primaries.

The general election poll released today surveyed 969 Florida voters July 22-27.

President Obama gets a 46 percent approval rating with 50 percent disapproving. That’s an improvement from June, when voters disapproved of Obama by a 54-to-40 percent margin.

Voters disapprove of the new health care law by a 53-to-36 percent margin, roughly the same as their 56-to-34 percent disapproval in June.

A state constitutional amendment to ban drilling within 10 miles of Florida’s coast is favored by 62 percent of voters, and 72 percent say the issue should be on the ballot. The state legislature last week rejected Crist’s call to put such a referendum before voters.

  1. David Smith Says:

I am a Democrat who will vote for Charlie Crist. Meek and Greene are just too mediocre for me. My choice for governor is Alex Sink. If elected, she will be the first woman to be the governor of Florida. Rubio, Scott, and McCollum will only make our economy worse by clinging to the policies that got us into this mess.

  2. No Brain Voters Raise Corruption Chances Says:

It is easy to see why Crist changed parties! He was in the wrong party to begin with with all of his lifelong naacp membership and other Obama connections! Stipabitch his controller, was smart enought to know the repubs with brains can see right through crist and Rubio would beat him heavy! By abandoning his enemies in the RPOF and going directly into the general on Nov 2nd he is no longer a victim of people with brains! Now he can get the Obama support he has had under the table all along! This socialist movement is not going to die easy! These corruptacrats are still getting fed under the table by the Obammy administration. The Tea party people had better get to work educating people about this organized culture of corruption accross both party lines or we’ll be stuck with more CharLIE’s and McCollum’s for years to come!

  3. Educator Says:

I totally agree, Charlie Crist and Alex Sink!

  4. Jupiter Says:

I agree, Christ is totally tied to Obama.

  5. jeffylou Says:

Crist is a known entity and we have all seen what he has accomplished by being smart and brave enough to cross party lines. He is about results – refreshing!
As for Rick Scott and Jeff Greene — wake up people!!! These are 2 gluttoneous thugs who ONLY care about 1. money (which they now have enough of so…) 2. POWER. Not to help others either. They are narcissistic and corrupt. And they attempt to justify/mollify it by spending $$$ to make us believe otherwise. Greene’s own mother lives in POVERTY – what kind of a good guy is he?
People you’d better stop drinking their high priced media kool-aid. SUCKERS, every one of you!

  6. Big Pete Says:

Greene is a carpetbagger, deep pockets, know nothing. Rubio is too far right. Scott scares me. Crist is the best MODERATE candidate.

  7. Verdad Says:

With Sink as Governor and GELBER as Attorney General we’ll start cleaning up the mess Florida’s been for a while now!

  8. Unreal Says:

“Crist is about results” What a joke. Crist is about himself. A self absorbed narcissist. That little game he tried to play with the Constitutional Ban on oil drilling to burn the Republicans was disgusting. The businesses along the coast are devastated by the oil spill, and he is playing politics. Charlie should drop out of the race, we are sick and tired of his selfish behavior, and his party games. Go lay in the sun and get a real tan Charlie, we are tired of you.

Jefflou, I recommend that you don’t play with sharp objects. Are you kiddin me? Do really believe that Crist is smart and brave enough to cross party lines? What medication are you on? Afterall, who was it that switched party lines when it was apparent Crist would lose in a Republican party. I say it was smart of him, but not brave because his political career was OVER and he knew it. Just weeks he said he was a “diehard” republican, but guess what – his political aspirations was too important. I wouldn’t call people suckers if you going to try and convince us that Crist is above politics and switched parties because its what the people wanted.

  11. d Says:

If you want a liberal democrat for US Sentate vote for Charlie. He’s been a life-long democrat for a long time but the republican party couldn’t come around and convince itself that it was true.
