Gelber asks Crist for executive order to expand unemployment benefits

by Dara Kam | July 20th, 2010

Gov. Charlie Crist could grant long-term out-of-work Floridians relief with the stroke of his pen, according Sen. Dan Gelber, a Miami Beach Democrat running for attorney general.

Lawmakers ended the special session on oil drilling early, making it impossible for them to pass a bill that would have allowed jobless Floridians to take advantage of an unemployment benefits extension Congress is expected to authorize as early as tomorrow.

But Crist could do by executive order what GOP lawmakers refused to do earlier this year, Gelber said.

“On behalf of the voiceless, the hard working people of this state who are about to be cut off from benefits which they have rightfully earned and to which they are rightfully entitled, I urge the Governor to act in all due haste,” Gelber wrote in a letter to Crist.

Dan, give it up – you’re toast. Gov. doesn’t need you to tell him what to do.
Just another of your cheap political stunts dreamed up by Steve.

    Gelber = loser !!!

  2. Serious Says:

Within moments of Pres. Obama signing the extension into law…

if Gov. Crist does not sign an executive order to make it possible for Floridians to access the EB help they need…

I think Gov. Crist and each incumbent Republican can pretty much kiss their political career goodbye.

The political posturing for personal agendas must stop.

It has caused too much damage to too many people.

I as well as the people of Florida who are unemployed need to have the EB extended and or reisnstated. Also a Tier 5 is needed to take care of those whose benefits have run out.

Florida is over 11% unemployed with one of the lowest amounts of unemployment
    benefits in the Country.

So may thefts, people in streets begging and this was the wondwerful Florida.

Gov Crist needs to sign immediatley the EB extention, if he does not do this for the people of Florida, his and the career of all Republicans will be over!!!

  4. Diane Says:

Thank you, Senator Gelber, for trying to help us. After a 43 year career in the hotel industry I was laid off,. I have tried to find work everywhere and have an interview at Publix next week but many applicants are competing for the same jobs. I am hanging on by my fingernails. If I only knew how this would go so I can tell my landlord and car finance people when I can send them money to hold on to what I have. I don’t know how I can look for a job without a home or car. Please continue to support the unemployed who did not cause this recession but are certainly paying for it.

Larry Cretul is such a liar.

He knew THEY WERE that was why they walked out.

    Wait until Septemeber?

That’s like being told you have a disease and only 6 months to live… but the good news is the cure will be ready in 7.

The more I read about this mess, the more disgusted I get.

Politicians are playing games and destroying peoples lives.

    Fix the EB issue.

    Fix it immediately.

    To me:

Your post was perfect and true.
I just spoke to Larry Cretul’s office and they claim they are trying to see if Gov Crist can get an Executive Order instead of calling everyone back into to a special session so thye can ge EB back in.
    I suggest everyone call 1-352-873-6564.
    Let’s get this done!
