Florida joins lawsuit to support Arizona immigration law

by Michael C. Bender | July 14th, 2010

Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum, who is also suing the federal government over its health care changes, today announced that he was joining Michigan, seven other states and the territory of the Mariana Islands in an amicus brief supporting the Arizona immigration law.

Immigration has become one of the top issues in McCollum’s Republican gubernatorial primary with Rick Scott.

“I support the current law in Arizona, and I support efforts to see a similar law brought to our state,” McCollum said in a statement. “Seeing no action or leadership from the federal authorities, Arizona has every right to move to protect its citizens, and for this they are being sued by the President.”

  1. The Right SUX Says:

McCollum wastes more taxpayer time and money filing frivolous briefs than he does protecting the interests of Floridians?
    Why is that?
Because he is an Right Wing Ideologue running for office and not a public servant looking after the best interests of Floridians.

  2. JJ Says:

Great idea. AZ is the EXACT same law as the federal law on immigration.

Here’s an article listing those being held by HOMELAND SECURITY. These are the countries the ILLEGAL are from according to HOMELAND SECURITY RECORDS:

IRAN, IRAG, AFGHANISTAN, PAKISTAN, EGYPT, LEBANON, SUDAN.

And Barack Obama and Janet Napolitano say CAN’T protect the USA’s borders.

We’ve got problems when the president and his secretary say they can’t protect us, but can go to other countries to protect them.

This guy and his appointees need to be voted OUT of office. Begin in 2010 and End an Error in 2012. A vote for any democrat keeps Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House.

Your local democrats and state democrats support the democrat policies and beliefs.

Illegal aliens are driving with fraudulent drivers licenses, bilking our tax base-ie-schools,medical care, social services, court system, jails, the list goes on!!!They break into our country, just like a criminal breaks into our homes. They can’t keep corrupting our great land! Its time they pay for their crimes!!!

  4. TS Says:

Where was all the outrage when all the Conservatives republican and democrate(closet republicans)alike allowed the Bush administration to steal away the surplus left from Clinton and the NO BID CONTRACTS for cheney, who by the way does’nt pay taxes since HALIBURTIN (fish) is in DAIBI, there you go tea party members a TAX ISSUE …………By the way if any of you support the death of Health Care and Unemployment tell your LEADERS to lead by Example and give up there own and join the rest of us…………
The majority of those who speak against immigration never had to be PROFILED , I know what’s it like I’d love to Exchange some parts of my life experiences with those who have no IDEA……….

  5. Mark Fordworth Says:

Obama and his administration are just playing politics with the Arizona law. They claim it conflicts with Federal enforcement, but once the criminals get past the boarder there actually is almost no Federal enforcement. And since when can’t state or local law enforcement enforce federal regulations? They do it all of the time when enforcing drug laws. The certainly should be no reason not to enforce immigration laws. Arizona isn’t changing the law or adding to it (which by states rights and amendment 10 of the bill of rights should also be legal), they are simply instructing their police to not look the other way when they believe the immigration laws are being broken.

I’m a native U.S. citizen, look American, speak with no accent. Yet I still had to produce my birth certificate to prove I was a citizen when I started my last job (and that was before 9/11). Since 9/11 I’ve had to show a passport or birth certificate just to open a bank account. So I find it hard to believe that carrying some simple documentation is an undue burden on people legally here who are likely to be questioned (for example, if they don’t speak English) and I think it is a reasonable requirement to try to address the problem of over 20 million illegals (which means, by definition, criminals) in our country. And I don’t care that they want a better life, so do other criminals who break our laws to get it. And they are keeping out (stealing the place of) the honest foreigners who would like to come to this country through proper channels.

  6. Eric Says:

Clearly McCollum is doing this just for the campaign value, but the IDEA is great.
So let’s elect Scott and get it done!

  7. Stella Says:

Illegal immigrants are criminals. There is nothing special about them that they should be pardoned the punishments that law-breaking calls for. Anyone who doesn’t support Arizona’s law seeks to reward illegals’ law-breaking by letting them stay instead of punishing them by sending them back. Anyone who opposes Arizona’s law supports criminality and thus is of low moral standing.

Bill McCollum, I hereby salute you!

  8. Howdy Doody Aims To Please Says:

Remember just when Arizona passed this law two montha ago McCollum said “that’s not going to happen here in Florida.” Now just two months later and just like his friend and mentor CharLIE Crist, he has flip-flopped and is not in full support of it! I gues it just takes corrupt career politicians longer to feel the winds and see which way they blow to decide which way they are leaning. Maybe McCollum had to call Penny Pritzker to find out if it would be alright with their mutual friend Obama if McCollum made out like he is opposed to Illegal immigration just so he can look like a viable candidate, who knows? What I do know is he doesn’t know what he thinks until he gets permission from someone or somebody to speak! That’ dangerous for Florida! Did you ever notice his paid bloggers never attack anyone who mentions the names Penny Pritzker or Mori Hosseini? Thats because they don’t want more information out about his connections with them!

  9. Mario Says:

I fully support the Arizona law. I am a son of legal immigrants. My parents had to wait in line, pay a bunch of money, and finally wait years to become US citizens….

All these people illegqally crossing the border should be rounded up and tossed out. I don’t care how cheaply they’re willing to pick tomatoes. I would rather pay a little more for produce and KNOW its being picked by people in this country legally.

    Go AZ!!!!

  10. Works 4 Bill Says:

Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t one of Rick Scott’s campaign commercials show McCollum’s audio clip of him stating that the AZ law would not be necessary here because that kind of thing wouldn’t happen in FL? And NOW that he’s down in the polls 13%, he is quoted as saying, “I support the current law in Arizona, and I support efforts to see a similar law brought to our state,”. The GOP can’t stand to have that kind of two-faced leadership. We already had enough of that with Charlie.

  11. Conservative Diva Says:

Bill McCollum did not support SB1070 before it was amended! The first bill stated that ANY lawful contact was reason to ask for papers. That means that if any of us, being AMERICAN citizens, were to say something simple to a police officer such as good morning they could ask for papers. Well that portion was amended and McCollum got on board!

Florida needs fixing…do your homework! Vote McCollum!!

  12. bigsnooper Says:

What i see, sadly is that the GOP is so desperate trying to recover confidence that they try to pry open any crack in the current government, i bet that if the white house had supported arizona’s law they would be the ones suing them.
They really don’t care of american citizens or illegal aliens.
Besides, we’ll be supposed to carry a passport to travel to our own country? oh i forgot it, you have to, if you flight.
