Court knocks redistricting initiative from ballot

by Michael C. Bender | July 8th, 2010

From Gary Fineout:

Judge Shelfer says amendment 7 could have wiped out other standards inc one that requires connected districts

Judge Shelfer says it took him 3 days and loads of case law to understand Amend 7. Doubts voter could figure it out.

State lawmakers — Republicans and some black Democrats — added Amendment 7 to the ballot to let lawmakers to maintain “communities of interest” when they draw new political boundaries. The NAACP and Women’s League of Voters sued to block it.

The amendment was in response to a pair of citizen initiatives (Amendments 5 and 6) that would aimed at overhauling how legislative boundaries are drawn. U.S. Reps. Corrine Brown, D-Jacksonville, and Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Miami, have sued to block Amendment 6.

  1. Tom Barrington Says:

You gotta keep the same crooks in power, all the voting districts need to realigned according straight line boundaries not gerrymandering as is the case in Florida.
The ones who sued they are the crooks.

  2. Mike A. Says:

@ Tom Barrington – you know nothing ’bout gerrymandering, especially if you think those suing are the crooks. Black Democrats made the crooked deal with GOP lawmakers that created the current districts. These districts as drawn effectively gerrymandered the Democrats out of political power despite having half a million more registered voters than the GOP does.

Ask yourself why the GOP is so against fair districts in FL? They know they’ll lose 1/3 of their seats across the board if the districts were mapped by a non-partisan board. Time to wake up and smell the Tea Party…
