No free ride for Democrat Burdick as Republican joins commission race
by George Bennett | June 18th, 2010Palm Beach County school board member Paulette Burdick won’t get a free seat on the county commission after all.
Sherry A. Lee, a West Palm Beach real estate broker, qualified for the ballot as a Republican this morning in the District 2 commission race. Lee’s papers were stamped in at the county elections office at 11:16 a.m. — 44 minutes before the noon deadline. Lee, 47, is making her first run for office. She said she’s been involved in a study group called “Lower Taxes Now” and has been blogging on county budget issues
Democrat Burdick was the only candidate for the seat after state Rep. Mary Brandenburg, D-West Palm Beach, announced Tuesday that she was dropping out. Burdick arrived at the elections office shortly before noon.
“I look forward to discussing the issues,” Burdick said.
District 2 is now represented by Democrat Jeff Koons, who is leaving because of term limits. Democrats hold a 50.2-to-24.1 percent registration edge over Republicans in the district. Republicans didn’t field a candidate against Koons in 2002 or 2006.

The School Board races in Palm Beach County are non-partisan and candidates do not run with party designation. The election is held on August 24th with the Party Primary . All voters may participate in the non-partisan elections for School Board and Judicial Seats. Candidates are elected with a majority vote. If there are more than two candidates and no one gets a majority, the run-off is held on the Nov. 2 General Election date.

Sherry Lee is a true citzen servant. THIS is what the founders had in mind 230+ years ago — people that made their lives doing something, building something, creating something, being called to serve for a period of time, and then going back to their lives. Career politicians are the problem with politics today, on all levels. Run Sherry run!
Restore Honor. Flip this House.

Ed is right.
Sherry Lee is making a huge sacrifice for all of us.
It’s not enough to applaud from the sidelines. Sherry needs money and volunteers.

@Corinne: Paulette is running for County Commission.
Though Paulette has been a long term School Board member, one would hardly consider her a career politician. As I understand it, she had a previous career as a dental hygienist and homemaker. Paulette ran for school board to make sure that her family’s children and the children of her community were better served by the school district. She did this selflessly to serve the needs of her community. She has been very successful and wants to to continue to serve the community in which she lives. It would be disingenuous to ever think Paulette could get a free ride to the seat. She is extremely hard working and committed to making Palm Beach the best it can be for her constituents and everyone in the county. She is honorable, independent of big business interests and seeks just government.
