Meek, Rubio ready to pounce if ‘pro-life’ Crist vetoes ultrasound bill

by George Bennett | June 8th, 2010

A bill requiring a woman to pay for an ultrasound before getting an abortion is now headed to Gov. Charlie Crist, who can sign it, veto it or allow it to become law without his signature.

The expectation among politics-watchers has been that Republican-turned-independent Crist will veto HB 1143 in keeping with his drift from conservative-sounding GOP Senate primary hopeful to Democrat-courting independent candidate.

If Crist vetoes the bill, however, he can expect cries of hypocrisy from the right and left.

Republican Senate candidate Marco Rubio’s campaign is already highlighting the old “Charlie Crist on Pro-Life/Family” page that’s been yanked from his indie campaign website. And Democratic Senate candidate Kendrick Meek has posted the above clip of Crist touting his “pro-life, pro-gun, pro-family” credentials as a Republican in February.

  1. Half Pint Says:

I don’t care what “political side” a person is on: it is not a “pro-life” decision, it never has been, it is a PR0-CHOICE decision; the gov’t needs to stop trying to put their hands on bodies that do not belong to them!!!

  2. RobWPB Says:

Actually, I think the term is more acurately stated as ‘PRO-MURDER’. Choice is a warm and fuzzy word designed to make you feel better about murdering an unborn child.

  3. Half Pint Says:

ROBWPB: Okay Rob you are entitled to your opinion regardless if it is dictating and biased.

The government has no right to advise anyone of choices to make with their own bodies; from abortions to tatoos to body piecrings to haircuts.

It is always the men who take these “pro-murder” stances; why don’t you do something positive: create a birth control alternative which leaves the MEN responsible and not having it on the woman’s shoulders all the time?

  4. Pro Sanity Says:

Any conservative who favors this law, then turns around and lectures the rest of us about too much government, government forcing ’social engineering’ on us, or whatever….should choke to death on their own hypocritical tounge.

This law is nothing more than a collection of corrupt tv preachers and bored wacko housewives taking a little victory lap in thinking they run our lives.

Veto this offensive bill, Charlie. Let the crazy Cuban whine all he wants.

  5. NoneyaBiz Says:

Veto this “INSANE” bill. Abortion is a legal medical procedure and this move by these MEN in our legislature is just posturing to the far right loonies. This is an unconstitutional mandate!

  6. 100% pro-choice Says:

    You go Half Pint!!!

Tell those religious zealots to mind their own business and keep out of other people’s lives.

  7. Think about it Says:

This bill is really “Pro-Choice” in the sense that it gives women an informed choice about what they intend to do with their unborn children. After the ultrasound, some will realize that what the see is a human being. Then hopefully, their choice is to preserve a human life. Does the law ban abortions after having the ultrasound? No. It only provides better information than what they receive from the powerful, and extremely profitable abortion business.

  8. Why kill innocent babies? Says:

Having an abortion doesn’t make you unpregnant, it makes you the mother of a dead baby.

A baby inside your womb is not a cancer! Pregnancy is not a disease that needs medical treatment! If you are pregnant, its wasn’t an accident. If you have sex, you should expect to get pregnant.

Funny how noneyabiz points out “MEN” as if ALL WOMEN want to kill their unborn children. Im sure she (it?) also doesn’t consider herself (its-self?) sexist…

Being a liberal is its own punishment!

  9. Upside Down Says:

This whole abortion thing is upside down. The repubs don’t believe in abortion and don’t want any unborn babies killed! The democraps believe they have the right to abort their young and even some like Barry believe in partial birth abortion where the kill ‘em with a rod to the head about the time they are ready for live birth.
Now the repubs claim to be educated and sophisticated and such. If they are that smart why in heqq can’t they just stop fighting the democraps about this abortion thing, go ahead and let them have all they want. (don’t you wish Pelosi, Reid and Ann Dunham had of had ‘em!) If the repubs don’t want to have them and keep their offspring off dope and shet in 3-4 generations the deocraps on drugs, alcohol, hiv and abortions will be extict as a dinasour.
The problem here is the repubs are to stupid to realize this!

  10. Confused! Says:

Fact: Abortion is legal. All the bible beating fanatics should focus on finding ways of taking care of the hundreds of thousands of unwanted and abandoned children already around us. When all of them have loving homes then you can argue a point. Until then, mind your own bodies! This bill makes about as much sense as forcing meat eaters to watch a cow being slaughtered before ordering a steak, or a fur buyer to watch the hundred Minks gtting slaughtered(that I would love!!) It’s a tax on the poor! Simple as that! Go find something else to stick your noses into!

  11. common sense Says:

I believe no man or goverment has the right to tell a woman what to do to her body. However, the bill is not about that. The bill is more about the money. Who is going to pay for this? All the people who are so PRO-”life” should set up a fund and donate money so the woman can have a free ultra sound.. oh wait now money is coming out of their pocket so I guess they are not so into it.
On a side note the majority of people who say they are “pro-life” also believe in the death penality… Kinda makes you go hhhmmmmmmm

  12. Independent Says:

It was a choice to have unprotected sex, after that it’s a LIFE issue. An abortion or taking your kid out back and putting a bullet in his/her head is the same thing, the only variance is the age of the child. Either way you’re killing it. Personally, until it’s against the law to have an abortion I will try to not judge the woman for her decision, there’s a higher being who will judge her for that. I do believe that the father of the child should have ‘veto’ power on abortion, because it’s his child also.

  13. Crist is political panderer Says:

This is NOT about a woman’s body. This is NOT about government regulating a woman’s body. This question, for the ages, is only about the meaning of life, the sanctity of life. We have LAWS — actual on the book laws — that decree murder is a capital offense. Why? Because we as civilized human beings find the taking of another life to be immoral. The government only serves as a reflection of the will and morals of a free society. So for those who agree with abortion — it is your right and moral perspective at work to believe that life does not begin at conception. For those of us who oppose abortion (get this, I am a woman who opposes abortion), it is our right and moral perspective to see life beginning at conception. Actually, I really am pro-choice … up until conception.

I wish people would STOP DEMONIZING those with opposing views. Right now, the law says abortion is legal. There was a time when it was legal to ban women from owning land (didn’t make it right, but it was the law). There was a time when owning another human being was legal (wasn’t right, but it was the law).

We have the right — guaranteed by our founding fathers — to change that which we don’t like. Sometimes we get our way; sometimes we don’t.

But for the life of me, I cannot understand why the hatred-spewing comments from those who have differing points of views. And we wonder why none of the morons (both parties) in DC can’t friggin fix A problem. They’re no better or worse than we, the bloggers.

Want to really make a difference? Write something heartfelt, write something intelligent, write something compelling. Then sit back for a minute and listen to what others are saying.

Anything else is noise. And it’s getting awfully boring.

    Good night.

    Dear Crist is political panderer
I do agree with you that Crist is a political panderer and is only in it for himself, but you made a statement that sparked my curiosity-
“We have LAWS — actual on the book laws — that decree murder is a capital offense. Why? Because we as civilized human beings find the taking of another life to be immoral.”
My question to you is do you also believe in the death penalty? Because the death penalty is a form of murder that we call “justified” and used in revenge or retaliation. So how civilized do we look now? If we teach and belive that the death penalty is acceptable then why would we expect any one to consider that life is precious?
