Crist still ‘trying build a consensus’ to ban near-shore oil drilling

by Michael C. Bender | June 25th, 2010

Gov. Charlie Crist was in Palm Beach County on Thursday campaigning for U.S. Senate for a ceremonial bill signing. He was asked about the potential for a special session this summer:

“There’s a number of issues, the most important one, however, is oil drilling, and I want to ban it in all Florida waters. And I want the people to have the power to choose to make that decision by putting it on the ballot in November so that they can do that. So I’m trying to build a consensus. The Senate has been more amenable than the House, frankly, on this issue, so I continue to reach out to the members of the Florida House so that we can have a consensus when we go into session, and I’d like to do it before the end of summer.”

Governor Crist is just trying to play politics with the gulf oil disaster by ignoring the facts.
The spill would never have happened if we were drilling in shallower water, where the oil would not have been super-heated and under such intense pressure.
If there had been an accident in 500 feet instead of 5,000 feet of water shutting down the spill would have been accomplished very quickly and the spill would have been relatively small and containable.
Drilling for domestic sources of oil is safer than importing foreign oil by tanker (where most accidents occur).
Exploiting domestic sources of oil and natural gas would bring tens of thousands of jobs to Floridians and would reduce the amount of money & jobs we send overseas to nations that support terrorism and hate us.
Governor Crist instead of trying to ban something that is already banned, should be screaming at his pal Obama to lift the Jones Act and get the skimmers into the Gulf to collect the oil instead of playing politics.
The fact is the ban on drilling off Florida’s shores should be lifted, not made permanent.
