New Rick Scott TV spot blasts McCollum on immigration, pledges to bring Arizona law to Florida

by George Bennett | May 23rd, 2010

Multimillionaire Rick Scott criticizes Attorney General Bill McCollum on immigration in a TV spot that began airing Saturday in the increasingly contentious GOP primary for governor.

McCollum has said he supports Arizona’s crackdown on illegal immigration — but doesn’t believe such a law is needed in Florida.

“McCollum — he’s got it wrong. Rick Scott backs Arizona’s law. He’ll bring it to Florida,” the new Scott ad says.

Please do! It’s about time, they’ve taken over!

  2. SWK Says:

Looks like I’m voting for Rick Scott.

  3. Way Too Go Rick Says:

Rick Scott has scared the pants off Howdy Doody McCollum! I mean now he’s got Jubbie Boosh endorsing him. It was bad enough the Crist appoint tyrant Jim Greer annointed McCollum the only allowable Republican candidate for governor refusing to allow Charles Bronson to run. So now this culture of corruption and control will get what they deserve. Someone they can’t control! Our whole nightborhood supports Rick Scott for Governor. We support disestablishment of this mentalasism!

  4. jbw929 Says:

Rick Scott is a criminal. Oops, shouldn’t say that, I will get banned from here like I did on Faceabook.

  5. Steve e Says:

They’ve taken over? Why do people insist on posting this type of inflamatory comment? Is it just plain ignorance or something else? Sure, go ahead and vote for Rick Scott. You’ll just be voting for another do-nothing-for-Fla suntan charlie.

  6. deportrickscott Says:

Rick Scott looks and sounds like an extremist, like one of those militia types. Lord help us if someone like that could actually elected. He must have more money than most people or he wouldn’t be running all those ads. He’s no representative of the PEOPLE, he’s a representative of warped mind. I don’t like McCollum either and I don’t like Sink, but of all of them, Scott’s the worst. He should be time-traveled back to Hitler’s Germany where he’d fit right in. Wonder if he had relatives in the KKK or if it is one himself.

About the only good thing about him running is that the authorities can snoop into his supporters and red-flag them for monitoring to protect the rest of us from hate crimes.

  7. Steve e Says:

I agree that Rick Scott appears to be a little too right-wing to be of any good to Floridians. He reminds me of Sarah Palin in the way he is quick to jump on whatever political bandwagon is popular without giving it any real thought. I wonder what type of leadership he can provide especially if we face a double whammy this year- an active hurricane season along with oil hitting the beaches.

  8. FalstaffsMind Says:

Rick Scott should have been in jail after stealing from the taxpayers at columbia/hca. He’s a first class creep, and it’s no surprise that he wants to win by tearing up Florida along racial fault lines. When mired in a recession, beware of the guy who finds a racial or religious scapegoat. History is littered with examples of this political gambit and its disastrous and often tragic consequences.

  9. melody Says:

Yeah …sure …just like all the gay and abortion hoopla of politics past … bring out the voters with hot topics that push their buttons … get elected and do nothing!

Tell us what you have done politicians before parading your lies of the future before us! Florida has been in Republican control for how long and now this one ‘maverick’ is going to turn the herd that profits from the illegal labor and has minimal financial hit for all the cost shift of social services?

How did he get to be a multimillonaire? In the USA today can wealth be attained without exploition or illegal activity?

  10. GT Says:

Wasn’t Robert Bird of Virginia the grand whatever of the KKK. I don’t think he’s a Repub. Maybe if you name callers get your facts correct we could talk.

  11. FalstaffsMind Says:

Robert Bird wasn’t a grand wizard, but he was a member of the kkk in the 1940s and one of the last remaining of the old dixiecrats although he personally has evolved far from that past. Like it or not, most of the old Dixiecrats like Strom Thurmond switched parties in the wake of the Civil Rights legislation when the ‘Southern Strategy’ became vogue for the Republicans. Those are the facts.

  12. One Thing For Sure Says:

The only honest person running for governor is Paula Dockery. She won’t get to square one with all the money McCollum and Rick Scott will spend on the air. Channel 9 in Orlando is announcing they are going to have a story tonight (I believe they said at 7 pm) outlineing the Stanaki land deal in Volusia county and tying it to Tallahassee.Thats the endangered lands the state had under contract and ready to pay for when Crist and McCollum stopped the process and let Hosseini apply for development rights for the swampland. These crooks even helped him push through the process and then called for a new appraisal. The results of this cost we the taxpayers millions more. Mori Hosseini pumped a lot of money into Crist, McCollum and a lot of other Tally crooks friends. If you see a candidate with Mori or Furough Hosseini’s name on their political conor list, you know that politician has been bought and paid for!

  13. Nate Says:

Where’s the video? I can’t find it anywhere online, not even at Scott’s video page.

Hopefully this post will be updated with the video as stated.

  14. Martian Says:

All of you sound like we have been
invaded by Martians from another planet.
When the economy was good it was okay
to have these martians clean your house and do your lawn RIGHT!! now all of a
sudden these are jobs you actually do.
    PLEASE……lets be HONEST
Rick Scott is a Rich Mook who thinks
his silver spoon makes him understand
the commoners. Lets stop the Apartheid
    before we become SOUTH AFRICA!!!

  15. Ed Fulop Says:

Immigrants are NOT the problem. My parents were immigrants, some of my best friends are naturalized citizens. They all came in through the front door, and were protected by the naturalization process on their path to citizenship, not in the shadows trying to live under the radar so they can avoid paying taxes while still reaping the benefits of social programs. We are a NATION of laws, and these laws are ALREADY on the books.

If the government can choose which laws to enforce, and which to ignore, how long until they pick a law that might affect you? What if you are a gay man, who currently benefits from the protection of hate crimes legislation? An assault on you would normally carry a 6 month sentence, but ends up putting the perpetrator in jail for 5 years because of who you are. Let’s say that the government decided to stop enforcing that law. What’s to stop them from not enforcing the assault charge either? “It was just a gay guy who got beaten up — probably deserved it” the wrong cop could say.

Let’s say you and I are next-door neighbors. If I spray paint the letter “X” on your front door, the crime I’m guilty of is vandalism. If I use just a little more paint, and give every edge of the X a tail — turning it into a swastika — and you happen to be Jewish, I’ve done a little more than vandalize, haven’t I? What if the police and the courts decide that a little paint thinner and some community service is all that’s required to make the situation right? How safe do you feel living next to me from that day forward?

Enforce the laws we have, without regard for emotion or circumstance. No one is above that in our country.

Immigrants used to be honored to enter our country and knew they needed to learn our language and tried to be assimilated into our culture. Now, they don’t care. Visit Hialeah or SW Miami and they speak Spanish all the time. Even to their little kids, its spanish first. More often than not, you can’t communicate down there if you don’t know Spanish. My ancestors were REQUIRED to learn english. Make English our language or send them back to Castro.

  17. Educator Says:

Complete fools all of you. Az.passes the bogus Republican, Fascist, Tea Party Law and now they find out they can’t enforce it..FOOLS! Where are all the millions of illegals they were going to deport? Imagine if that ever happened, the world will rise up and make 9/11 look small. Natural migration has occured since day #1 The white man kicked out the Native Americans and are now themselves headed in the same direction. The world knows how stupid the American population is, now more proof.

  18. Tom Says:

Damn it! He’s a republican! I smell big oil money here! But I like his immigration views. Sorry Rick you tied yourself to a sink ship with the republicans.

  19. Ed Fulop Says:

    Educator –

The law in Arizona is nothing more than a reiteration of the Federal law that already exists. The problem is that the Federal Government is chosing to ignore the problem and NOT enforce that law. I’m sure you would feel differently if you lived in Arizona; One in 4 in that state has been the victim of identity theft, average wait time at an emergency room is 90 minutes, and the automobile insurance injury has it at the top of the list for staged car accidents.

You showed all the readers here your a$$ when the second line in your post begins “Republican, Fascist, Tea Party” etc. If you truly are an educator, why don’t you educate yourself on what the problem is before you start foaming at the mouth about us stupid Americans? Natural migration? There’s nothing natural about it — they are fleeing an economy in Mexico that oppresses them. Why don’t you protest the government of Mexico that forces these people to think that they have no better option than to cross the border? Don’t hate the tea partiers — they’re the only ones that apparently have skin in this game. Hate the Socialist governments around the world that force their people that want freedom to have to try and find it elsewhere.

  20. HM Says:

    “Thewy’ve taken over”

Yes, they have, thanks to 40 years of Republican grovelling to the Miami-Dade political machine.

Remember, a Mexican coming here illegally to use our roads, public services, health care, schools….is still taking his chances at being deported.

A Cuban can do all of that free of fear. Once they’re here, they’re legal. There is no border between Cuban soil and American soil. There is no such thing as an illegal immigrant from Cuba.

    Makes ya think, huh?

  21. Paul Says:

Rick Scott? The same Rick Scott who was the CEO of HCA? The company that defrauded billions from Medicare while he was in charge? And Jeb Bush is endorsing this creep?

Has anyone noticed the Rick Scott ad about the immigration issue not being a laughing matter? Did anyone take time to notice that the negative film clip of President Obama making fun of the Arizona Law was taken from the White House Correspondents Dinner? Where everything is made fun of?

Then this guy runs a series of commercials where he claims he ISN’T a POLITICIAN? The very micro-second he announced his candidacy…he became a politician. DUH?

In my humble opinion, Rick Scott is the biggest phony to EVER to seek public office in Florida.

Ill give him this much. Rick Scott makes Marco Rubio look like an altar boy!

  22. SP Says:

Anybody who will enforce our immigration laws has my vote…

  23. GR Says:

Rick is afraid to stop all the rafters that come into Miami everyday. $$$$$$$$$

  24. LEGAL IMMIGRANT Says:

All politicians are criminals and in the pocket of some corporation, and once he started running for office he became a politician. BUT! If he enforces immigration laws and kicks all the illegals out…….he’s got my vote!

  25. DS Riley Says:

Wow! What Arizona did was against the law. he has already proven that he has no respect for the law by committing fraud and now he wants the State of Florida.

His only interst in this campaign is his self-interest as he has so blatantly proven in his negative ads. Hopefully he won’t be able to buy his seat in the Senate.

  26. Ed Fulop Says:

    Riley –

Prove your statement “What Arizona did was against the law”! It is EXACTLY what is already written in federal law, but the government refuses to enforce. That doesn’t make something illegal.

And incidentally, if you are still talking about Rick Scott, he’s running for Governor, not the Senate.

    Restore Honor. Flip the House.

  27. Ed Zackery Says:

IF McCOLLUM WANTS TO CALL RICK SCOTT A CROOK MAYBE RICK SHOULD LOOK AT McCOLLUMS CROOKED DEALS AND CONNECTIONS

    STANAKI LAND DEAL
The most damaging issue for Crist and McCollum is the Stanaki Land Scam in Volusia County . One of his donors Mori Hosseini of ICI Homes was offered 3.4 million for 225 acres of land by FDEP in May 2006 . Crist granted his donor development rights on the land while the state was in active negotiating to buy it with Florida forever Funds. (FLWAC may 31 2006 cabinet meeting). The result was an increase in cost of 2.5 million for Florida taxpayers ( FCT Grant FF- 08 -004). Now we are learning that the donor is contributing much of those additional tax dollars to Crists campaign. Now we see that a Court had advised Crist not to grant those rights if the result would be an increase in the price the state would have to pay his donor ( DOAH 05-001852). He did it anyway!! Now we are funding Crists campaign with state preservation funds

Crist names developer and environmental lawyer to water management board

posted by Orlando Sentinel on May 19, 2009 6:19:09 PM

Ludmilla Lelis of our Volusia County bureau just filed this post:
Gov. Charlie Crist has picked two new people to serve on the regional water management district board for Central Florida – a Volusia County engineer with development ties and an Alachua County law professor with environmental ties.

Crist named Maryam H. Ghyabi, 50, of Ormond Beach, and Richard G. Hamann, 58, of Gainesville, to the St. Johns River Water Management District governing board, which controls water consumption permits, approves wetland permits and decides how much water the local utilities can siphon from the St. Johns River. The district includes parts of 18 counties, including most of metro Orlando.

Ghyabi is president of Ghyabi & Associates, a transportation engineering and planning firm that has been a consultant on many local transportation issues. She is a sister of Mori Hosseini, a big-time developer based in Daytona Beach. Hosseini is a Republican super-fundraiser, ranking as a “Ranger” who raised at least $200,000 for President Bush’s 2004 re-election campaign. Hosseini and his array of companies frequently show up in many elected officials’ campaign finance reports.

Hamann teaches water and ecosystem law at the University of Florida’s Center for Governmental Responsibility. His professional affiliations include the Florida Defenders of the Environment and the Alachua Conservation Trust.

If approved by the state Senate, Ghyabi would replace David G. Graham of Jacksonville and Hamann would replace Ann T. Moore, the Flagler County representative.

Why have a board when they are only there
    to parrot the powerfull’s interests?
    Note: Both appointments were approved

  28. Cindy Says:

Just let me ask you something…did you think we had an immigration problem before Mr. Scott came along? This has become a favorite trick of the Republican party. To scare us into voting for laws, or voting for candidates. Making us believe we should be concerned about an issue that really has no merit. Remember the visqueen and duck tape? Yup. That’s one of them. The Republicans can really spin a good story. And, unfortunately, it has been working up to now. Be careful Floridians. I didn’t vote for Obama, but he is right about the Immigration Law. This will only cause racial profiling. If we were going to have an Immigration Law, why didn’t we do so after September 11, 2001? Why wait till now? Because, Mr. Bush didn’t want to cause racial profiling of Middle Eastern visitors and citizens; didn’t want to offend them. But, Cubans and Mexicans are ok to offend. The difference? The obvious. Most people that visit us or move here from the Middle East have money. Most Mexicans and Cubans do not. I have lived in Florida all my life. Mr. Scott moved here about a year ago. He doesn’t know a Palmetto tree from a Crepe Myrtle. Do you really think he cares about hard working Floridians? The ones who work on farms? The ones that serve his food at a restaurant? The guy who cleans his pool? C’mon Florida. Really look at this guy before you start buying into his hype. Stop drinking the kool-aid.

  29. Richard Says:

I cannot believe what Im reading here, the fact is our nation was built on immigrants who when they enter their new country assimulated to it ways and left their old countries ways behind, but since our once president Ronald Regan opened the borders for mexicans on work visas the border disappeared and now the seventy million illegals have invaded our country and with the power of numbers they have managed to get their language in our work place, schools, government offices, signage, you name it and now they march in protest because they want more, and with this minority president leading the way they will get everything they want and you people who complain with be forced to learn spanish to even exist in this country.

  30. Cayeyana55 Says:

There goes the State of Florida. First the license to kill scared away tourists. An Arizona law in Mickey Mouse’s home will drive tourism to the ground therefore, the States revenue. Poor Florida. You will be doomed.

  31. Peatowantquat Says:

It seems to me, Most, once in jail, Then

Check, Just like I D Cards, almost 100%
on a National data base already.

Yet, It’s not just Mexican but Others too,
It seems Like the Nazi SS or KKK or the KGB. Is that what we or you want.

“Paper’s Please!” They don’t look in order.

“Let shoot then and ask question’s
    later.”

Mexico sent it’s Army across to help us during katrina. It’s the drug war thats going on. They want our help.

  32. DRBRD Says:

Ricks TV spot tells us that with the new Arizona law, officials will check the legality of individuals being arrested. Thats not quite the way it reads. The law permits police to stop ANYONE that they think looks like they may be illegal, and if they don’t “have their papers in order”(sound familiar?) can be detained.

  33. Ed Fulop Says:

Now YOU are misreading Arizona’s law, and accusing others of doing it! The law makes it a state misdemeanor crime for an alien to be in Arizona without carrying registration documents REQUIRED BY FEDERAL LAW (did you catch that?!),[1]:§ 3 and obligates police to make an attempt, when practicable during a “lawful stop, detention or arrest made by a law enforcement official”,to determine a person’s immigration status if there is reasonable suspicion that the person is an illegal alien. Police may arrest a person if there is probable cause that the person is an alien not in possession of required registration documents; a person arrested cannot be released without confirmation of the person’s legal immigration status by the federal government pursuant to § 1373(c) of Title 8 of the UNITED STATES CODE!!!!

The police are NOT going to be driving around looking for drivers to pull over because they LOOK like anything. If during a regular traffic stop, or apprehension of an individual after the commission of another crime, the officer has probable cause to suspect that the individual might be in the country illegally, ONLY THEN may that officer request documentation of status. By all accounts from cops I’ve spoken with, they’d only be inclined to do so if the driver’s license looked fake or tampered with in some fashion.

If you, as a tourist, in ANY OTHER COUNTRY IN THE WORLD, get pulled over by the polizei while driving a rented car, you will be asked for your driver’s license. Once that officer sees that your license is not of his country, I PROMISE YOU, you will be asked for your passport. I can vouch for this — it’s happened to me twice.

For you folks who are so bound and determined for America to be just like Europe with it’s crappy socialized health care and 2 months of vacation time a year, I don’t understand why you don’t want to be just like EVERY COUNTRY IN EUROPE (or the rest of the world, for that matter) when we are talking about this issue. Why is that?

  34. DRBRD Says:

This is from the U.S. Immigration lawyers website: “Essentially, the main concern is that the new law will have US Citizens being detained and forced to offer up proof of residency or citizenship that is not readily available. How many Americans carry around proof of their citizenship? Your driver’s license is not going to suffice.”

  35. Stacey Miller Says:

Anyone that wants these disgusting illegals out of our country and state has my vote! Go Rick Scott!!

  36. DRBRD Says:

If theres no work here the illegals wont have a reason to come. Why don’t we focus on stopping the greedy business owners looking for super cheap labor. These guys have no conscience and have no problem breaking the law to get cheap labor.

  37. OMG Says:

Kindly read the Arizona law before you make commercials and accusations that take it completely out of context! It is not a matter of checking on the illegal alien status if an arrest has been made for another crime. It is about stopping people on the streets and demanding documents based on appearance. What’s next for Mr. Scott? Yellow stars and pink triangles???

  38. EdFulop Says:

OMG — that is not what is going to happen, and you know it; you are just fear-mongering. Fully a quarter of the cops in Arizona are of Hispanic descent – they aren’t looking for reasons to harrass people, and you thinking that they are shows contempt for the men and women who are on the job as police officers.

DRBRD — I don’t disagree with you. E-verify MUST be part of any comprehensive plan to control the borders, but it is not the magic bullet. Drug-dealers aren’t on anyone’s payroll. Once again, it is a matter of enforcement; these laws are ALREADY on the books, but the federal government have not only cut the teeth out of our watchdogs, but they’ve locked some up in their kennels as well.

  39. Kat Says:

I was wondering why a person who goes to renew their driver’s licenses have to have a ton of paperwork proving who they are and yet yesterday illegal immigrants were stopped and the driver had NO driver’s license and all 12 or 13 were here illegally, and yet they were let go in Citrus county. What gives with that? Is it a political thing? It is sure unfair to those of us who are natural born citizens to see this injustice happen and right under our noses. I sure didn’t see anything about it in the newspaper today either. I saw it on last night’s channel 10 news. The driver’s picture was shown. Why in the world would they be let go while us US citizens have to prove our right to get a driver’s license or anthing else for that matter?
