Drilling ban will wait for House, Crist says

by Michael C. Bender | May 20th, 2010

We told you on Friday that Gov. Charlie Crist had decided to give more time to reluctant House lawmakers before calling a special session.

Crist wants lawmakers to come back to Tallahassee to put a constitutional amendment on the November ballot to ban offshore drilling in state waters.

But a similar ban already exists in state law and even Gulf Coast lawmakers view a special session as a political response that could divert resources from disaster preparations.

Crist defined his thoughts a bit further on Wednesday, telling the Miami Herald editorial board that there would be no special session before the end of the month as he works to find a consensus.

“I’d rather do it sooner rather than later,” he said.
