Senate slips Callery-Judge Groves traffic exemption into growth management bill

by Dara Kam | April 22nd, 2010

The Senate approved a last-minute amendment that would carve out a special exemption for the Callery-Judge Groves development in West-Central Palm Beach County allowing builders to bypass rigorous planning requirements for large developments.

The amendment would allow county-created “limited urban service areas,” like Callery-Judge, counties to circumvent the review process for traffic rules and large developments.

The amendment was added by Sen. Mike Bennett, R-Bradenton, onto a growth management bill (HB 7099) shortly before the Senate passed the measure by a 36-2 vote.

The House could take up the measure as early as Tuesday, and if any more changes are made, send it back to the Senate for another vote before the session ends next Friday.

  1. David Says:

No special exemptions. Roads cost money and this will be put on taxpayers’ back instead of the developers’ back.

  2. john Says:

ok, so who will be indicted for this scam? our lawmakers have no regard for we, the people of the acreage. there was no thought of traffic control when the high school, elementary or middle schools were built, and adding thousands of homes, needing to access sem pratt-whitney will congest the area beyond belief without proper traffic studies and control. this can only lead to dangerous , if not life threatening situations. i’d sure like to know who’s going to profit from this, ‘cos it surely wont be we, the people, that live here. we’ll end up paying in lowered values, higher taxes, and compromised safety, the only thing that will remain constant is that we’ll continue to have corrupt politicians ready to slip an “exemption” into a bill that is meant to control just this.

  3. Bennett is the worst ever! Says:

Bennett needs to go! This guy is nothing but a shill for the development and irresponsible growth crowd!

  4. Katie Says:

Amendment 4 will stop pay to play land deals like this from happening. If the people of the acreage want their voices to be heard, they had better vote yes on Amendment 4.Mike Bennett , and all of the other growth junkies in Tallahassee, hate Amendment 4.
