Middle class or poor? Depends if Negron supports or opposes bill
by Michael C. Bender | April 2nd, 2010I swear I’m not picking on state Sen Joe Negron. The second blog post (after this one earlier) about him today is just a coincidence…
The Sun-Sentinel reported this week that the Stuart Republican criticized President Obama’s health care bill because it would let “middle class” people enroll in Medicaid, a health care program designed for the poor. (Negron opposes the health care bill: He encouraged Attorney General Bill McCollum to sue over it and offered a budget amendment this week to counter some parts of it.)The federal health care reform does expand Medicaid eligibility to 133 percent of the poverty line, which is about $29,326 for a family of four.
Just a couple of weeks earlier, however, Negron told the Senate Finance & Tax Committee that his own plan to expand the state voucher program is aimed at “the poorest of the poor.”
How does Negron define “poorest of the poor”? Well, Negron’s bill (SB 2126) would let families at 230 percent of the federal poverty level — or $50,517 for a family of four — keep half of their voucher to attend private schools.

I work for the scholarship program that will be helped by Sen. Negron’s bill, and just wanted to expand on the last paragraph. The bill doesn’t change the eligibility for the program, which would remain at 185 percent of poverty. It would allow families whose students are already on the scholarship to grow their income up to 230 percent before they are dropped altogether. As the income grows, the scholarship would first drop to 75 percent and then to 50 percent. The half scholarship next year is projected to be about $2,065, or roughly one-fifth the amount spent on a traditional public school student. Atta boy Palm Beach Post! Attack those Republicans! Who cares about objectivity? Certainly not us Democrats and Post employees (what few are left after most lost their jobs). To heck with the fact the paper is losing readers every day because it is so one-sided and now makes no attempt to hide it. Keep bashing those who disagree with our ultra-liberal plans until you finally go out of business. Take one for the Obama team!

how typical. 24 of 27 comments all the same.
only 3 can think for themselves.
it’s the fox news/republican mantra.
keep repeating the same brainwashing. such a shame.
