Term limits battle in West Palm Beach? Frankel undecided on 2011 plans
by George Bennett | March 15th, 2010
West Palm Beach Mayor Lois Frankel says she’s made no decision on what she plans to do when her second term expires next March.
Frankel can’t seek a third term unless the city charter is changed, a process that would probably require a petition drive and referendum between now and November.
“I have no initiative under way,” Frankel said, and nothing planned. But, she added, “a lot of things could happen” in the next few months.
Read about it in this week’s Politics column.

No third term. End the corruption.

Public service to elected office was never meant to be a career. Politicians should have the good sense to walk away from the job when her term ends, and find another way to serve. It is only because of these power-hungry politicians that we even have to consider protectionist measures like term limits, to keep them from putting down roots.

The term limits are there for a reason. It is said that a lot of politicians look at them as a hurdle and attempt to get them rewritten.

I think it should be only one term. This way they work fast to get things done. Look at our governor. He has done nothing he promised in his campaign. What a waste he has been for this state for four years because of it in this economy. How long will it take to recover from him let alone what the mounty issues will be when the new Governor gets in.

Remove term limits. If the majority of the population doesn’t support the current administration, vote them out. But for some reason, this mayor has won both times. She’s done a great job in the downtown areas and decreased crime in all corners of this city. Can she remove all crime? No, but the numbers prove that she’s made a huge impact. Sorry you can’t see the forest for the idiots who have personal issues with the mayor. Our city budget is suffering like every city in the country. Wake up people. Can’t you see that declining real estate values as caused budget deficits in every corner of the country?

Mayor Frankel has done a good job for West Palm Beach. She is a strong leader. However, any attempt to extend or get rid of term limits or to change the elections is a power grab. Voters won’t accept it, they will see this for what it is and reject any extension. The collateral damage of this proposal will be two fold – first Frankel’s long tenure of service will be tarnished and her legacy will be that she was just another politician who tried to change the rules (and failed!). The second and worse issue is that the longer she delays letting go of Mayor’s job the more she stalls the next Mayor’s election from getting started. That only hurts the best candidates from running a proper election. Frankel’s legacy won’t be eight years of great service, it will be the last minute attempt to stay in power and her action will create eight years of a future mayor that no one really wants. How can she not see that?! Let it go…and end on a high note.

I am not a fan of term limits – but that is what the voters in WPB have and its there for a reason – so we can give new leaders a chance. Lois knew that when she ran the first and second time for Mayor of WPB. She would get elected if she ran for county commission, for state legislature or even for congress. She’s that powerful. However, neither she nor any “citizen initiative” will be strong enough to turnover the term limits or extend them. In a time when people are looking for less government, no matter how bad the idea of term limits are voters will not change their minds on this. I hate term limits but I would vote to keep them in place. So will others.

Let us vote for 5 year term limits for ALL government bureaucrats. If politicians have trouble fulfilling their duties, bureaucrats are the prime example of ineptness, arrogance, illiteracy and in some case even nepotism. Most of them could not make it in private industry or the real world thus they opt for the secure easy way out, government employment. If we really want our country back we must control how many we have in government, and term limits. Moreover, while they are exercising the honorable position beset upon them they should not have the right to vote until they leave office.
