Post stories spark changes to tax bills

by Michael C. Bender | March 26th, 2010

State Rep. Stephen Precourt on Thursday removed any reference to “nontraditional family values” from his film incentive package after The Palm Beach Post this month reported that the term could keep tax breaks from movies with gay characters.

In the same committee meeting Rep. Lake Ray, R-Jacksonville, amended his bill after a Post story Sunday reported insurance companies would not pass a tax break he is proposing on to their policyholders.

Also Thursday, Sen. Don Gaetz, R-Niceville on the Senate floor referenced another Post story published the same day and said he would prevent investment brokers from earning a percentage of the “transferrable” tax credits for the film industry.

Story here.

Is the Post taking credit for causing these changes to the bills?

It sounds like the Post and/or its reporters had an agenda for publicizing issues within the bills that they did not like, and are therefore happy enough about causing these changes that the Post is now tooting its own horn about it.

Let’s hear it for the impartial news media! Yea!

When lobbyists try to influence public policy, at least they don’t try to make people believe they’re impartial. Not so with the news media. This is just the first time I’ve seen a news outfit actually take credit for it publicly.

Only in Michael Bender’s mind could a self-congratulatory story like this be conceived. The death knell for the newspaper industry rings louder by the day.

Congratulations for doing your jobs so well! Y’all should get an award for your online ‘Vapor’ version of the news and the public ‘E-say’ that the daily thrown on the front yard ‘Dino Plates’ never could provide. Hope y’all are getting financial support to keep the ‘Vapor’ online! The Palm Beach Post and Florida public schools and universities and only these noted have my permission to use of the terms I have coined here.
